I lived in a hilly part of Kent, UK, for my first 30 years or so before emigrating to Queensland 20 years ago. When we got snow/ice there it was a major event, complete chaos, nobody knew how to handle it. The yellow salt bins by the side of the road were useless. Much entertainment was to be had hanging out of my teenage bedroom window listening to the traffic slide down our local hill and waiting for the metallic crunching sound. Enjoy the change of scene Rob.

First covering of snow is pretty, full stop. The novelty soon wares off. When you get a lot and can't work or even get to work, or the shops to get food, you soon get sick of it. Great fun when you are a kid, but less so as a working adult. As for dodging extreme temperatures. I am a builder. I grew up in England and necessity means you work in all conditions, if you can. I have since lived and worked in Queensland for 26 years. Necessity means you work in all conditions. Such as concreting in 42C. In the UK sweeping the snow off a roof to lay tiles in minus 5. Wet tiles frozen together. Earning a living as the sole provider is a hard taskmaster. If you work in an office, once you get there the temperature is artificially controlled. But for outside workers like dairy farmers and builders you just have to cope.

Hi Rob, Aussie here who grew up in Buckinghamshire. I do miss the walkability of living in England. I used to walk a lot, along roads and across fields and through woods. Don't miss the snow though. Good for playing in but when the buses don't run and you have to walk through it to school or work it's not much fun. You get there cold and wet and stay that way all day. Maybe these days with central heating it might be better. There is is something magical about fresh snow though. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Thought you were back in Aus We had fresh snow just over the border in Lancs this arvo. Working at the Museum in York yesterday and there was no snow. Huddersfield had a couple of inches I believe. You need to go for a slide on the snow slopes of Yorkshire - bleedin' good fun. The grit is the reason why classic vehicles suddenly disappear off the road. The yellow flowers on the spikey gorse often smell of coconut oil - lovely, redolent of sun tan oil of the 70s/80s

Another great video Rob and I am not just saying that because it is where I live. And yes, we do know what we have. In the spring, the Woodsome Valley is a picture. I remember seeing trout in Lumb Dyke, the beck that you feature. Farnley is known as Farnley Tyas, named after Baldwin Tyas. He was a Westphalian and fought with King John in Normandy along with his 3 brothers. Later, King John put them in the charge of 4 knights in England and Baldwin Teutonicus got some land in Yorkshire. Of course, he had obligations and joining a crusade was one of them. Baldwin was subject to de Lacy and he went to fight in Egypt. The name Tyas comes from anglo norman Tieis, meaning the German. The Tyas family manor was between Marsden and Slaithwaite. After the Tyas family, the Kaye family took control of the whole Woodsome Valley. Their manor house is still there, now a golf club.
