At 76, John Oates On How Daryl Hall RUINED His Reputation
#hallandoates #darylhall #johnoates
The music industry has seen many iconic figures, but few duos have captured hearts like the phenomenal Hall and Oates. With legendary hits like The Rich Girl or Sarah Smile, the pair had the world dancing in the 1970s, and they reached heights that musicians could only dream of. Yet, behind all this, a heartbreaking story would be taking shape. Soon, they would have the musical world mourning this harmonious duo when their relationship began to crumble into one of the most bitter betrayals that shattered their band and bond. It was a dramatic fall from fame for the Hall & Oats brand.

I Recently attended a Darryl Hall concert he sounded great after all these years. I also saw Hall & Oates back in the early days before they ever achieved massive success. I think I preferred the earlier struggling musicians more than seeing Darryl Hall performing with his backup band performing the hits from the past.

Unfortunate that there is a lot of repetition in this video. The same comments over and over. Not for me.

My sisters best friend said Hall was HORRIBLE and Oates was wonderful to her back in the 80s.

Both of them are very talented. John has put out some amazing music since they split up. His music is very different from what Hall and Oates did. This could be both of their stories.

Oats has found a good home in Nashville. I was a fan from early in their career. As a hardcore Rundgren fan, the War Babies album was on heavy rotation in my youth. I saw them at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh as they were blowing up and Hall was to this day one of the best vocalists I have ever seen. They produced some great music and I will choose to concentrate on the beautiful things they created and not the animosities that usually develop in all endeavors where humans interact with each other

John Oates lived next to Hunter S. Thompson in Woody Creek, Colorado for a good while. Oates spent most of his time snow skiing, which he was very good at.

John Oates was the business man in the partnership. He was the one managing all the stuff while Daryl was the better songwriter and singer. Hall could take all that time off and leave it to Oates. Hall could worry about the future while John is weighed down taking care of the last five decades. Oates got tired. He couldn’t do it, anymore. Either he hands it over to someone else or it all collapses. Hence why there is never any discussion of Daryl stepping up to help John out.

Fun Fact: the name of the duo is Daryl Hall & John Oates. Not Hall & Oates as commonly said. Look at all their album covers if you don't believe.

Daryl Hall's first two solo albums were a departure from the dual sound, but his last four, not so much. On the other hand, John Oates' six solo albums all sound very different from the dual sound. But it's all good.

I enjoyed growing up with these guys and so many great tunes. They upped the quality of pop in general. However getting paid on your copyrights is less and less reliable and verifiable with today's formats. It's similar to what 1800's songwriter Stephen Foster experienced with player piano companies pasting his tunes on the rolls without paying him. Oates is smart to cash out in his later years, free to invest in more solid things.

Partnerships are never a good idea unless you make everything clear in the beginning. Who gets credit, ownership, IP rights, management processes.. of course a couple of musical geniuses don’t think of these things and this is what happens.. I wonder how Bacharach & David, Campbell and Webb and John and Taupin survived intact?

I saw Hall at the Mountain Winery last fall and he sucked. Rundgrun played for an hour then Hall came out sat at the piano mumbled through 4 songs then just stood up and walked off. 200.00 per ticket. NEVER AGAIN

My sister when to one of the last Hall and Oates concerts today. She said Hall acted like he hated being there, stared at the keyboard, wnd had no energy. She went to their concert in the 80s and loved it. Hall is an egomaniac.
