I find it amusing how most folks talk about Sony APS-C imaging as entry level, beginner cameras but when talking about Fuji cameras, that doesn't come up. in most cases, one can put images shot with an asp-c camera along side images shot with FF cameras and in a blind test they would be hard to pick which was which. I have both. The smaller set-ups with lenses are very appealing on the aps-c side and IQ is excellent. Yes in low light FF is better but with DeNoising apps that difference has become less of an issue.

Great review, as always!!! I'd like to add a word of encouragement to anyone just getting into photography and wondering if APS-C cameras are good enough to go past hobbyist. The answer is a resounding yes! I've been shooting professionally since the 80s and have followed the digital tech curve through all its iterations. A couple of years ago I switched from one brand of DSLRs (which I was so heavily invested in you wouldn't believe it) to Sony mirrorless APS-C. (And yes, I kept some primo full-frame DSLR stuff for limited studio and landscape work). I now shoot almost exclusively Sony crop-sensor bodies and I'm loving the smaller, more portable tech. I shoot commercial, product, and lifestyle photography for my clients and they've never been happier with the results. In fact, they don't care what the heck I'm shooting as long as I give them the eye-popping creativity they want. They never even ask. Would I love dual card slots and a better EVF and the other FF bells and whistles? Sure. (And FYI, I haven't had a single SD card failure in 15 years of digital work...although I still would love two slots.) Will I get Sony FF bodies in the future? Of course, I love gear as much as anyone and this is how I make my living (and I would not call it an upgrade...it's just different). But does it really matter? Nope. Not. One. Bit. So get any darn camera you want and hone your craft. You can do it for fun or make a good living. Go for it!

I have had the sonya6000 for many years and love it, even with its faults, because of the small size and grip (I have small hands). I have recently started doing more macro photography, and the fact that Sony is finally adding focus bracketing to the a6700 could make a big difference to me, although it doesn’t quite compete with the in camera focus stacking on Olympus. Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed the clear explanation ☺️

For a hybrid camera (photo/video) I'd prefer a screen hinge system that's less flashy/gets attention (for street photo/street capture) and also is aligned with the lens versus with a swivel out screen you have the screen to the side and out if you want to tilt it. Sony had a couple screen hinge solutions like this before (Sony DSLR Alpha).

You didn't mention that they did improve the cup on the EVF. As someone who doesn't chase cameras and tends to keep mine for many years, the EVF is fine. I've taken my best photos with lower res EVFs. Yet being able to shoot better in bright light without having to use your hand to cup block the sun is an improvement.

I've watched a few reviews of this camera that make a big deal about the same things. A single card slot, micro hdmi and EVF. I personally like the small for factor and am prepared to accept these 'shortcomings' to keep the body compact. I never use the hdmi port, and the EVF is fine for me as I analyse the images on a computer screen later anyway as I'm sure everyone does. Ideally, a second card slot, allowing jpegs to go to one card and raws to another would be good but that would probably add to the size and cost. Autofocus performance is the biggest priority for me so I will be Upgrading my A6600 for this reason alone. When all said and done, this is not marketed as a pro level camera and it's fairly reasonably priced. People wanting camera bodies with a fuller feature set have the choice already but should be prepared to pay considerably more for it. Comments from other brand fanboys, saying this cameras is garbage because it's not fuji, canon etc are just pointless a specially as unless they're a reviewer they haven't actually had one to use.

I own both the a6400 and the Fujifilm XT5. Fujifilm provides more features and better LCD/EVF. I think that this a6000 lineup is more for photographers than videographers and they should really pay attention to the details like making a better EVF. It's a good upgrade from the a6400 but from a photographer's perspective not a huge upgrade. The good video features and AI autofocus is more for professional work than the majority of the users who will buy the a6700. The best hybrid camera now is the Fujifilm XS20. I wouldn't upgrade if I had a Sony APSC (a6400/a6600). I would upgrade to the Sony alpha full-frame cameras. That's a more obvious upgrade in terms of image quality for stills.

I mostly agree. I think size still counts for a lot. Particularly in this line, and proven by numerous manufacturers. For example, I have an XT-1. I love that camera in so many ways. Even today, the XT-1 is still a viable photographic camera to use with street, landscape, and portrait photography. When upgrading, I wanted better tracking and Focus speed. I opted for the A6600, as my Fuji lens count was still small. Again, size also playing a huge roll as the XT-4/XT-5 have larger bodies. I've owned those other large mirrored DSLR's (Nikon D7/D300/D500. I found I would not take them out much. Full frame didn't warrant my (and many) to add bigger, and heavier lenses. Sony is very firm on the size of its A6xx class for very good reason. I'm just pointing these items out. An upgrade does not mean a larger or full frame move unless one is a wedding, Sports photographer, or reaps the benefit of their paid results. Why anyone would do that with an APS-C would not be too advantageous unless they were starting out in photography. Yet the market knows the prosumer APS-C has an attraction all its own. Hence, a new A6700 by Sony with quite a large assortment of 3rd party lens mfr's.

@@MrJafar Sure, I am not "comparing" but just saying that the overall user experience is much better than the Sony (even with previous models like the XT3/XT4). All other brands make great LCD/EVFs that you don't need to go home and open the images on your computer to see the quality and true colors. Even Jared Polin mentioned it in his review. Also, I am not saying that the a6700 is a bad camera but those small details make the difference to me.

I have the A6400 and the A6600, and the A6700 appears to be a significant upgrade over them both. The AI Autofocus is matched only by the A7RV. And it works in all modes. That's an upgrade for everyone, and video shooters have even more to cheer. 10-bit 4:2:2 video means that S-log 3 becomes more usable. The ability to load custom LUTs is another big plus for video shooters. The 4K60p and 120p video modes are straight out of the Cine line cameras. Could the viewfinder be better? Sure, but Sony has always been about REALLY compact APS-C cameras, going back to the NEX line. And you can pair the A6700 with the Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 G lens and have 24-82.5mm (35mm Equivalent) coverage for under a kilo. That's more coverage than a full-frame body and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, for significantly less weight. Add the Sony 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS Lens, and you reach out to 525mm full-frame equivalent, and you're just over 1.5 kilos. You can do a 3-lens kit with the A6700 that will cover 15-525mm full-frame equivalent, stay comfortably under two kilos, and cherry pick key features of the A7RV and FX30, while providing faster mechanical shutter burst rate than the A7RV does in electronic shutter mode. And you're telling us that's not a major upgrade???

@danfarmer_photo
@danfarmer_photo Жыл бұрын
@@johnsonguite It really depends on your application. For filmmaking, whilst slog3 is really nice, Fuji’s flog2 really is easier to work with and deliver greater results with less work. There is an authentic look about the files that give them that ‘film’ look more naturally (nicer grain profile etc). But I will say, the later Sony sensors are really good and the difference isn’t worth selling off everything to move to Fuji. I only did it as I had a business partner willing to purchase all of my Sony gear for a good price at the time. I’d you are still using old Sony bodies, Fuji is a good upgrade. As to photography. I feel the Fuji has the edge again in colours, but since the Sony A1, A7IV and above, you really can work with the files to create that Fuji aesthetic fairly easily, so again, there isn’t much difference. Hope that helps.

@@johnsonguite You are very welcome. Just remember there is a substantial crop on the 4k 120p on the Sony, so if that is super important, I would actually look at the XH2s (I have this body also). The other thing to consider which I didn't mention previously, is the ability to shoot open gate on the XS20 and XH2s. The determining factor of value for open gate is if you have clients that require a lot of social media video. It is so helpful to be able to shoot in normal landscaper orientation, and to be able to repurpose the one file for both KZbin 16:9, and for social media 4:5 or 9:16. It's not say you can't shoot social media videos on Sony, of course you can, but the 3:2 open gate is a big deal for that style of content. That was actually a factor (one of) with moving to Fuji. I was shooting a lot of clients that had socials and KZbin. Originally I had a Sony rig with a vertical mount, and one in landscape. I would shoot them both for interviews. Now, XH2s for my A cam, and it does both jobs! Not to mention the resolution at 6.2k gives so much resolution for rescaling. Anyway, don't let that put you off your choice. Sony are amazing and have great sensors now. Aren't we so lucky to be so spoilt for choice these days... All the best.

Good review. I 100% agree with you re. the viewfinder. Am I correct, a third party could create a wired viewfinder using the HDMI port, or would it have too much lag or lower resolution (not sure if the HDMI supports 2K or 4k). Another use for APS-C is a crop multiplier for wildlife. No reason Sony could not produce an APS-C stacked (or even a non-stacked fast readout) sensor for 15-20 fps wildlife photographers.

The problem with microHDMI based products is the port is small, fiddly, and prone to losing connectivity and breaking. I hate microHDMI. Going to miniHDMI, a much wider, deeper, more solid connector, but still smaller than HDMI, would have been a big improvement.

I know this always conjures up debate, but if you look at Canon, they have pretty much decided that MOST people want a fully articulating screen and I think SONY made the right decision to provide this in the a6700. For me - and I believe many others- the fully articulating screen is so freeing and provides the optimum versatility that you could want for the plethora of possible camera positions necessary for the variety of shooting angles. The fact that it can swivel is one of the key aspects because it provides endless degrees of positions for each angle and you're not restricted by hinges that can't emulate the versatility. The ease of use just can't be duplicated by hinged screens, IMHO.

Sony, going back to the NEX cameras, has always been "compactness uber alles" when it comes to APS-C. It's only fairly recently (A6600) that Sony started giving APS-C bodies a decently-sized grip. And that philosophy has its uses. A6xxx cameras are great for backpackers trying to shave ounces, street photographers wanting an unobtrusive rig, travel photographers who want 24-525mm equivalent coverage for under two kilos, that fits in a 6L pouch, etc.

Sony absolutely could have combined this with the FX30 to make a true hybrid camera, but they would rather segment things. Why doesn't the a6700 have dual card slots and a fan like the FX30? Why doesn't the FX30 have a viewfinder and a mechanical shutter like the a6700? They could have EASILY made one camera that did it all, but they chose to make two with neither one feeling complete. Other manufacturers make cameras that don't compromise and work well for both pursuits.

If you are starting out then 6700. It's smaller and lighter. The golden rule is that practicing is essential and cannot be substitued with anything. The size of the 6700 makes easier it to carry around even everyday (did that to my 6000 back in the day), so you can shoot anytime anything you want. The aps c lenses are giving it even more of a size advantage. The 7C don't have too much advantage over the 6700, maybe apart from the bigger(but way older) sensor: none. Not even in image quality.

Negatives 1) To me the A6600 grip feels better than the a6700. 2) I can't believe how much I dispise the fully articulating LCD screen. I thought it wouldn't bother me much but it does. I don't ever have a need to rotate the screen so I can see it from the front of the camera. With the A6600 if I lower my camera for a perspective shot all I had to do was gently pull out the bottom of the display. Now I have to completely pull the LCD screen out, then rotate it. So annoying. I realize this is subjective. 3) Compared to the A6600 I'm disappointed in the battery life of the a6700. I find that the battery won't last a full day so I must bring and swap-out a spare battery. I had gotten spoiled by the long life of the a6600 which sometimes lasted two days. 4) I don't like that Sony moved the power on/off switch. Positives 1) I very much prefer the viewfinder on the left like the whole a6xxx line. The resolution seems fine to me. 2) Moving the video button to the top is much appreciated. 3) The new menu system is a big improvement. 4) The front dial, under the shutter button. 5) Having the SD slot on the side means I won't have to take the camera off the tripod just to change the memory card. 6) Buffer clearing time is so fast I almost never have to wait for it. 7) The new ai focus system is amazing. 8) Slightly improved low light capability is one of the main reasons I bought the a6700. All in all the a6700 is fantastic. I'm glad I have it.

Yeah well you must be part of what lesson one percent that can't seem to want more options in your LCD screen? You're not even in a minority you're literally like one of a kind. All I've ever heard from reviews of their previous models was the fact that it wasn't fully articulating.

A6700 has AF improvements, and no sensor will fix missed focus. Focus bracketing may help macro photographers who like to stack images. FX30 video capability for $400 less. It's arguably a better sports camera than the A7RV. Same autofocus. Faster mechanical shutter frame rate than the A7RV's electronic shutter frame rate. The A6700 sensor has the same pixel density as the A7RV, it's just smaller. Oh, and Sony kept the price the same as the camera it superseded. Waddya want for the same price?

One thing I've never seen people mention, is that probably the biggest drawback to APS-C is the fact that it amplifies / zooms in on lens imperfections like chromatic abberations, it is a lot more visible on crop sensors. Bought an old Nikon 180mm 2.8 ED, and first tried it out on an old Nikon D90, while waiting for the adaptor for my Lumix S5, I thought it was rather low quality, lots of CA, on the full frame sensor it's not even visible.

I’m going to guess that is really really low on the list of things people care about. People want the newer better glass on their new higher megapixel cameras. Neither. The Fuji X-T5 and X-H2 are a much better cameras than the A6700 except for video autofocus where they hunt. You begrudgingly get the A6700 as a wildlife-camera because of the crop-factor. A6700+70-350mm is nearly as good as the A7IV+200-600mm but half the cost, size and weight making it a more realistic prospect to carry around with you. The 200-600mm needed for full frame is so big and heavy. If you are not interested in telephoto or macro and not already invested in Sony lenses then the A6700 should be of no interest either. For amazing Sony autofocus in video, there is the FX-30.

The A6600 will not allow you to use exposure compensation unless you are using auto ISO. If you select a specific ISO, then the exposure compensation is not available to use. (Why???) Has this been changed in the A6700? If so, then I would consider buying this camera. The front wheel, animal tracking and better autofocus would really make this camera a tempting upgrade if they have fixed the exposure compensation.

What mode are you shooting in? I just tried my A6600 in Aperture mode at f/5.6 ISO 400, and adjusting the exposure comp to -1.0 and it increased the shutter speed from 1/13 to 1/25. If you're shooting in manual mode, you have manually locked the aperture AND the shutter speed. ISO is the only part of the exposure triangle left, and if you have that manually set, too, the camera can't do exposure compensation. I tried the same thing with my A7iii, and Manual mode with Manual ISO, keeps the exposure comp dial from changing the exposure.

The people bashing the A6700 for not having a big DSLR-style EVF are basically bashing the entire A6xxx series. The A6xxx cameras have ALWAYS been about compact size and light weight. They're designed for the backpacker shaving ounces, the street photographer who doesn't want a rig that shrieks, "PRO PHOTOGRAPHER!!!", when he's trying to get candid shots, the videographer who wants to fly a fast 24-70mm equivalent lens on a smaller gimbal, the travel photographer who wants to fit 24-525mm equivalent coverage into a 6L pouch at less than two kilos. Sony gave APS-C shooters more resolution and better low-light performance than any prior Sony hybrid APS-C camera, better AF, and most of the FX30's video features, plus a bunch of little things, such as focus bracketing, and mapping. And they did it for the same price that the A6600 released with. It's as good as the A6600 in every way, and better, in most, for the same money.

Sony could solve all of this by doing what they did with the FX3 and FX30, keep the body size of a full frame camera and just stick a APSC sensor in it, then you get full size hdmi port and all of the other advantages of the full frame body. Give you a A7RV with APSC. You can improve the viewfinder and charge 1799 to 1999 and it would sell. This cost Sony almost nothing because they already have the body and yes they could throw in that magnificent flexible screen of the A7RV.

Pretty well, especially when you consider lens selection/value. Canon's R7 has a bit better specs, but you're stuck with Canon's proprietary lens system. Sony encourages third-party manufacturers to build e-mount lenses, so if your budget won't stretch for a G-master lens, you can go for a Sigma Art lens and get 90%+ of the G-master's quality for 1/2 to 2/3 of the price. And if that is still too much, Samyang usually offers 80-85% of the quality at 1/3 to 1/2 of the G-master's price. Canon doesn't allow ANY third-party RF-mount lenses, and Nikon doesn't allow third-party lenses that compete with Nikon offerings. So if you want a 50mm f/1.4 lens for your Nikon, it will have to be Nikon.

APS-C, for Sony, going back to the NEX line, has always been about light weight and compact size. Sony just doesn't consider APS-C to be a "pro" format. It's a B-camera, at best, for Sony. Not that Canon is much better. Canon's RF-mount APS-C lineup consists of THREE lenses, and they're not really up to Canon's usual standards, for image quality. It would be kind of cool for Sony to bring out an all-up pro APS-C body with all the trimmings. Big DSLR-style EVF, dual card slots, faster frame rates, better temperature management, etc. A baby A9, in other words. But it would probably cost almost as much as an an A7IV. And that would make it a hard sell. The A7RIV has full-frame, higher resolution, and all the pro features, so why buy APS-C when the same money will get you full-frame?
