When? You think new infrastructure could have withstood the flooding of this size? I don't care if it's Republicans or Democrats, the budget would not allow for designs to withstand flooding of this magnitude. Following the flood the rebuilding would be bipartisan, so what's your point?

@@runnergo1398 I cannot imagine any infrastructure budget for designs that could accommodate floods of this magnitude, only to sit idle for another 233 years until the next big event. The last time WNC experienced a flood of this magnitude was 1791. I'll guarantee you that the rebuild will be bipartisan. So what's your point?

Most people who live “down here” are not even from here!!! which shows you know absolutely nothing about the southeast area. It’s nothing but transplants here now from New York, California, Florida, New England, Pennsylvania etc etc the list goes on. There are people that are stuck on top of mountains. These are not just dumb red necks, although I’m sure you think everyone down here is. these range from every day people in their homes, to wealthy millionaires mansions, to college students in their dorms, to hospitals, to trailer parks, to 5 star hotels. People are trapped. An entire interstate collapsed. This is a bustling city in the mountains AND the rural suburbs surrounding. There are farmers who all their animals have drowned. Because they could not get them out. Almost every f****** road in western north Carolina and upstate sc are all impassable. If they are passable no lights work. Most people don’t have water power or cell service and honestly we don’t even have a death count yet. Good to know they have been spared so far this year..I hope those affected in the video had non perishable food and bottled water stored. Some places do this NOW! I heard about it a generation ago. Island countries that get a lot of hurricanes are an example. An engineer told me at length about how cheap ordinary houses are constructed in (I think it was) Puerto Rico. Concrete blocks much as we do here, but the ROOFS were made of cast concrete sections, like the letter PI. They were lifted up on top of the house with a simple crane. The roof is RUGGED, you can cheerfully walk around on it, PLANT STUFF. There was a simple and effective way of protecting windows that I thought was so brilliant. It's easy to draw. But briefly an aluminum extrusion is attached to the wall above and below the windows, a "Z" shape. Miscellaneous planks cut to the right length can be slid in there sideways to cover the window! My friend said "a little kid can do it!". We don't learn anything from this, probably never will!

I only got to speak to her a few minutes after recovery. I haven't been able to speak to any of my family in that area . Asheville is my hometown and I'm have been away from the area since 2016. We have had flooding, lost power, Internet connection and just like everyone else it is impacting our cells as well. I to am fighting cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Primary Perinatal Adreno Carcinoma. Primary Perinatal Adreno Carcinoma is a rare cancer which less than 7 out of one million cases are diagnosed each year. I have been fighting my Ovarian Cancer since 2020 and the Primary Perinatal Adreno Carcinoma was found in 2021. Sorry I didn't mention toshare that but I'm sitting here devastated and pouring out my heart . Chimney Rock basically no longer exists and I spent so many Sunday picnics there as a child and I have need to tell my parents that it's gone before they see it on the news or someone else tells them. I know that sounds ridiculous..but one of my fondest memories as a child was going on a picnic on Easter to Chimney Rock ..Lake Lure and sitting on one of the big rocks and eating one of the big chocolate bunny's ears, after my mom broke it off for me. I hope others have happy memories to carry with them of Chimney Rock. Because it can't be rebuilt to be the way it was the river bank where the buildings sat and the buildings are gone now. Please pray for everyone in the WNC area and everyone affected by Hurricane Helene their all going to need so much help in the recovery process. Not just clean up and rebuilding. But there are actually policies and practices we could do to "change the nature " and of both the intensity and frequency of these climate events, because we know with data and evidence, that the increase in temperatures making the water warmer, makes these storms more severe and last longer than previous storms and hurricanes. All of these people should invest in reducing the impacts of climate change - because this is happening because of human activity and the use of fossil fuels for energy. They should support renewable sources of energy and over time can reduce the severity and frequency of flooding, fires, and degradation of the natural world. It isn't just "all chance" but in our ability to change the behaviors and practices that make it worse.
