I worked for Rolex from 2005-2010, and I find it very hard to believe they "can't" produce enough to meet demand. Even 15 years ago Rolex was very concerned about avoiding the kind of market dilution problems that plauged Omega in the late 60's and early 70's. When it's something every middle class family has in a dresser somewhere it stops becoming an aspirational item. I think they found a convenient excuse to curtail supply without enraging their dealer network who were extremely hostile to this sort of suggestion years before.
@AcmeRocket3 жыл бұрын
They make plenty. I can buy any Rolex I want if I was willing to pay the markup. The problem is they end up in with resellers. If they found a way, or if they wanted to prevent this, all of the BS would be over.

You say this, but just about every family has an older Rolex Datejust purchased in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, perhaps worn daily or perhaps stashed somewhere. I wouldn't say that's stopped Rolex from being an aspirational item.

Not everyone see's the point in paying that kind of money for a watch, even in the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s. It was always the cheapest way to tell time on my wrist somewhat accurately. EDIT: This is not to add to the discussion on wether it is an aspirionational item or not, just wanted to add my two cents to the argument that not every family has a rolex.

At a current Chrono24 range of $10,000 - $14,000 USD for this dark blue dial version, Rolex can keep their Oyster Perpetual - there's so many other watches of much greater quality that can be had for that or less. For me the Grand Seiko SBGA211g beats the Rolex OP any time and they cost basically the the same. With the difference that you can walk into any AD of GS and walk out with a watch on your wrist. I think enthusiasts like me start to get angry with Rolex because in the end they’re great watches but they don’t live up to the hype around them. GS on the other hand surpassed expectations of watch enthusiasts all over the world which gained them so much success. The OP only is the better option if you care more about the brand name than the watch itself period. Of course you can like the OP better and if you just feel that itch, nothing else will scratch it, but there are so much better options for the same price you definitely should consider.
@sweetd59533 жыл бұрын
Problem with GS is it's not offered in different sizes like the OP. I'd rather not have a watch that says Rolex on the dial, but would prefer GS to just say GS or Seiko so if anyone asks, nobody ever does, I wouldn't have to say GRAND Seiko after they show me their lowly SKX. Too bad for branding..

The GS SBGX263 is incredibly beautiful. The ticking (quartz) is unbelievable smooth, hits marks perfectly, and arguably has a soul. Recently, I've taken to wearing it again and have been reminded of how much I like it, mostly for its simplicity and understated elegance. I'm really starting to favor three-handers. I got tired of setting dates and since living through two years of sweatpants and Netflix, stopped caring anyway. I'd venture to say that the OP perfectly balances its utility under a suit sleeve and with pair of jeans. It is stripped of all presumption, such as the date (got a cell phone for that), rotating numbered bezel (never use them), dual time function (don't care what time it is in Cairo). The irony is that while many buy a Rolex because it screams Rolex, the OP flies under the radar and says the person wearing it really just wanted a great watch.

I was dead set on purchasing an OP as a 40th birthday present to myself. I have a number of watches and have never really been drawn to Rolex before, but the new OP41 appealed to me with its simplicity and a lack of the blingy showiness I often associate with Rolex. I thought it would make an excellent every-day wear watch. But the cultish requirements required for the “privilege” of purchasing a entry-level brand piece are inexcusable and drove me away. No, I don’t think you should have to present gifts to an AD, or beg to be put on a list, or buy a bunch of other watches from the AD in order to buy your way into the brand. So I didn’t. And I expect I’m not the only one. I would bet good money that Rolex will have a real Harley-style brand issue in ten years, where their only customers are their existing customers - a slowly shrinking market dynamic made from an inability to bring new customers into the fold. On the other hand, I’m really loving my Oris and Omega, and will likely add a few more of both brands to my collection over the coming years.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion in this comment section, but I for one think that the market decides a product's general value, not subjective opinions of one or many reviewers, and their specs sheet. Watches are not just its specs on paper. A certain watch and its value is also the ideas, the designs, the society's overall sentiment of it, the prestige conveyed by wearing it, the brand it carries, is all worth money to the consumers too. Not just the technical specs. Speaking of technical specs, let's not ignore their technically superior movement compared to pretty much anything else in almost all price classes (if not all) when it comes to precision and reability, which is something that is valuable too. The reability of that movement-family is pretty much unparalleled, and none other watch producer dare to claim +- 2 sec for a purely mechanical movement. It is apparently worth something to the masses. Rolex don't do haute horology however, which is what you could get for the same price as a submariner on the secondary market. So it all depends what the customer wants. But a lot of customers do want what rolex offers, and that, along with what they are willing to pay for it, is its value, whether you personally agree to it or not.

I really like Rolex and until recently anyone could have owned one if they were willing to spend $5k for a used one (wished I would have). I also like Patek Philippe but never planned on owning one. With modern pricing and my current income a Tissot, Hamilton, or Bulova are looking like my next watch. I own a couple of Swiss watches but it seems either a Seiko or Invicta (gasp) sub homage finds it way to my wrist. They maintain good accuracy and in the world of working class guys, they hold up and look good. Not everyone spends time looking at a watch with a loop inspecting brush strokes.

Mr. Baldassarre I really appreciate your passion, enthusiasm and knowledge of the watch brands. I am in Canada but always looking forward to your uploads on youtube whether is a review or an introduction of various brands. The Rolex situation has frustrated many watch lovers and enthusiasts, unless someone really wants a certain model in Stainless steel and go to the secondary market to get much over the retail price, it is better just put the purchasing action of Rolex aside and see how it goes.
@TeddyBaldassarre3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the support. Rolex has been frustrating to cover from my perspective. I have reviewed two models all year and it always ends with the same note. Great watch, but not worth the market value. I love the brand but this has become a fatiguing reality for everyone who loves watches.
@tl42383 жыл бұрын
@@TeddyBaldassarre Yes, I totally agree. Few days ago when I was at my AD(he is not a Rolex Dealer) purchasing another watch, a customer of his was complaining about how he wanted to purchase a rather common SS Rolex but has to be put on such a long waiting list and he said he might not even get it eventually. I sat there waiting and almost wanted to jump into the Rolex's topic. Difficult for me but I choose to not to engage because I thought if I did, I might upset that customer more.

It's a great looking watch, super-clean, just the way I like them... But I'd never buy a Rolex, and not because they are insanely over-priced (even at the base retail value, not to mention the current scalped prices) but because of the clientele it tends to attract, and consequently what people who are not into watches think about Rolex owners. It's the same reason why I would not buy a Porsche-I am at a point in life where I could afford those simple luxuries but I just don't want to be perceived as part of the crowd these brands tend to attract. I'll admire their craftsmanship from afar and sport my GS (which is also becoming ridiculously overpriced but at least 'the masses' don't know about it so you'll never see it on a hand of a Russian oligarch).

@manuelz8113 жыл бұрын
This says more about you than it does about those who choose to wear a Rolex or drive a Porsche. It's ironic that you care so much about what others think that it would prevent you from otherwise enjoying something you like (Assuming it's to your taste and you could afford it) than being caught up in your own preconceived notion. Most people who do enjoy these items likely care much less about what you think. Full disclosure, I have a small Rolex collection - all of them have increased in value quite a bit over the years while I get to enjoy them. Enjoy your Grand Seiko - they're great watches. But probably not the best approach to size people up based on what they wear or drive.
@lchamp79463 жыл бұрын
@@manuelz811 yep… I was thinking the same thing as I read the original post. I want a Porsche and will enjoy driving it without giving it a second thought for what people think of me or the typical Porsche owner. I couldn’t care less.

Teddy - as a sales professional I congratulate you on a very clever ‘reverse sell’ from a Rolex that nobody can buy (even those who can afford to) down to a Tissot that most people could afford I own a Tissot Gentleman identical to the one shown in this video and can happily endorse just how fantastic the watch really is - it out performs many $2k watches never mind $1k dollar watches - in terms of movement, fit and finish it has a Tag Heuer Carrera beat (also a great looking watch) - and when you consider the price / heritage the Tissot is just a no brainer If someone is looking for a taste of the Oyster Perpetual the Tissot is a total no brainer - just buy one already If you must spend over $5k on a watch avoid Rolex and buy a Grand Seiko - better made, better movements, better finished and no stigma

@scottbertelson3523 жыл бұрын
The OP is a quintessential Rolex that holds to the key principles of the brand. Especially with the new movement that provides greater accuracy, a longer reserve and greater service interval while keeping fantastic looks and quality at the forefront the model, especially in blue, is a Rolex to be owned and worn. Unfortunately, as my AD indicated, the new colors and no-date sub have caused Rolex to prioritize the scarce movements away from the base colors of the OP, which is a shame. If I were to design this for myself I would have kept the 39mm and incorporated a smooth bezel but I would be satisfied with the 36OP in blue if it were to become available. The Tissot ticks most of the boxes however don’t see it being the same heirloom piece nor something that will appreciate in value.

Great Video TB. After getting back into the watch game. I purchased my first Rolex a Sub in 1998 for a nice 30% discount. Today it's a lot about value retention, hype, hype and hype etc. Rolex is still the King. People either want to get one or they want to get another one. GS/Omega etc is nice but just not in the same league for all around value proposition. People can buy Rolex, wear it for a yr and two, and then get their $ out of the watch. Try doing that with most other brands. The more this happens - the more it supports Rolex as an investment piece. Because the models are timeless and change very little, people don't get so easily burned by watches going in and out of fashion. The AD world is very confusing and disappointing, but eventually I found a great AD and now I have added 3 more Rolexes. Nowadays one can't just walk into a store and buy a new Rolex, but that's life - you either deal with it or whinge about it.

As a OP 39mm black dial owner, the 39 size is slightly better than the 41mm but that 5mm Easy Link is completely worth it for anyone thinking about the 2nd market. The 39OP does Not have that 5mm extension. my 2nd watch is the 39mm Explorer 1 with the 5mm extension, that 5mm extension is Such a luxury! but the classic looks and simplicity of the op is why my explorer is my "fun" watch and the OP is my dress AND fun watch. (for those wondering, the 39mm explorer bracelet does fit my 39mm op case and hell yes its perfect)
