It's time to launch a new series: Norwegian waterfalls / Running Waters. In this first episode I travel to the top of the 7th highest waterfall in Norway: Langfoss. This waterfall is considered to be one of Norway's most beautiful waterfalls, and according to BBC; Langfoss is one of the world's top ten waterfalls. I grab my camera, tent and sleeping bag and find out what the fuss is all about.

Loved this. My great great grandmother made that climb with her herd so they could have fresh grazing. She milked them and made cheese which was sold at that little shop where you first started your trek. My cousins still own and care for it. Yes very slippery! Deep respect for my ancestors.

I love doing this exact kind of hiking & backcountry camping here in the US. Usually I go 1-2 nights, with my camera gear, in the mountains. Except I use a hammock, not a tent, because we have lots of trees in the wilderness near me, and I sleep better in a hammock. I would love to do this in Norway. Your country is so beautiful - it looks like Middle Earth! I hope to go in the next year or so. As always, thanks so much for sharing.

@oddbjrnaustevikfoto 6 жыл бұрын
Tolkien did draw inspiration from Scandinavia and Iceland among other places when writing, so I guess it kinda does :) Sounds like fun sleeping in a hammock. Maybe I should try it. Less to pack for one thing. Does the hammock close (maybe a stupid question..)? Or is it under the sky?
@jongrall
@jongrall 6 жыл бұрын
Hammocks are great. Several advantages: usually way more comfortable (not on hard ground); faster to setup; doesn't require level dry ground; better ventilated w/ much less condensation inside; keeps you off the ground (less buggy & wet); can be lighter if you do it right. Disadvantages: usually the wrong choice in really cold or windy weather at exposed campsites; often more expensive to get the best stuff; you need suitable trees to hang. To answer your questions, some hammocks are open, while others have an integrated bug-net, or a nylon top cover, and yet others have both covers and bug nets that are removable. Personally I favor an integrated bug net, and I bring a separate hammock tarp that I setup above me if I expect rain. Unlike tents, the best and lightest hammocks are generally made-to-order by really small companies you've never heard of. If you're interested, one of the best brands is called Hennessy Hammock. I have their Hyperlite Asym Zip hammock, and Hyperlite silnylon tarp. I use it with lighter guy lines and tree straps that I bought from a site called DutchWare gear, and I make setup really easy and adjustable by using pairs of aluminum climbing rings with the tree straps at each end. One big thing to know about hammocks is that they are cooler underneath because you have no insulation from the ground. Unless it's a really mild or warm night (18C+) you will need what is called an under quilt to avoid freezing your butt off. This is basically a special down blanket that goes on the outside of the hammock underneath you. You also might want a top quilt instead of a traditional sleeping bag (it's less restrictive, and the under quilt will already keep your back warm, allowing you to save some weight). So you see, there's a bit more to learn about with hammocks. Being able to tie some basic knots is also helpful. A great resource on hammock camping is Shugemery's channel here on KZbin. If you just want to lighten your load generally also checkout: CleverHiker.com, DarwinOnTheTrail (KZbin); and maybe think about getting a lighter pack from a company like Zpacks that are made from Cuben Fiber / Dyneema Composite. Hope that helps!

I think this is my favorite episode of yours so far. Just fantastic buddy. I loved seeing the entire experience. The hike and some of that b roll was phenomenal. Thank you Diego! Unpacking that camera for the tenth time for some b-roll up that mountain was not very tempting towards the end. But you never regret it when starting editing :) We have some wildlife yes, but not so far west as I was. I would be very very surprised to encounter a bear up there, but there has probably been one at some time. At least in the old days. Further east and north we have the usual suspects of wolves and bears etc. But they really don't want anything to do with us. So I'm not worried about that :) Thanks again mate!

I love waterfalls and this place was unbelievable. I was so impressed by it’s sheer power. It made me think though what you said in the beginning. Sometimes we take things for granted like this place which you said you have passed from so many times. The panorama I took: flickr.com/photos/universal_creations/17837996414 You were very close to it, when you were in Tromsø.

Tusind tak for at have vist mig, hvad der ligger ovenfor Langfossen.

Takk!

Just climbed a mountain, completely drained of energy and famished. Eats one egg.
