Doug, I work in a paper mill. It was built over 15 years ago and uses some drivetrain technology based on nearly 50 years of continuous development. Driveshafts, motors, gearboxes, bearings etc. Finite element analysis, tribology, metallurgy, modelling, incremental design…….and guess what? We still get issues. You do you. We enjoy the journey and few of us expected a guy building his first boat in his front garden (yard) would launch and take his research passengers out to sea straight away!

Every time is see a pan shot of all the complexity and organisation in Seeker, it amazes me that this is a bespoke boat 'the internet built'. Boat companies spend generations of design, model and people improving their products (mostly), just like car, bike and tool companies sort of do. It still amazes me that this boat came from flat steel, fabrication, learning and system engineering. Very cool.

The detent ball on the shift rail is not there to hold it in gear. Locking the rail down to hold it in gear is likely going to eventually bend the shift fork. I can’t remember how the 205 transfer case is setup but typically the clutching teeth are such that under a load they are pulling themselves together. But as they wear and become rounded off it will then start to jump out of gear. Thanks for sharing.

@@SVSeeker Locking the detent is a solution to the symptom not the cause, this will wear the shift fork. It is a temporary "get you home fix'. Talk to your transfer case guy, but I would be checking the end float on the transfer case gears, shift fork wear not allowing the selector sleeve to fully engage or wear on the dogs of the selector sleeve. The thrust bearings on the gears should be taking the axial load, so there is a deeper issue here as this is a new problem that you didn't have before. I'm sure you will pull it apart at some point to figure it out, because as you have said previously you like figuring shit out. Having the ability to select neutral for the regen capability has to be tempting.

Hi Doug. I do not know if this is going to be of use however when I used to race Landrover's back in the day. The transfer boxes on the older series 2, 2A & 3's used to pop out of low range. Thats the red lever yellow lever transfer boxes. This happened on boxes that were worn. It happened when the boxes were under load then came off load. Like when cresting a hill or incline. Always these had excessive backlash when in low range. This was due to spacer shim wear or the wrong thickness of shims put in on box assembly. Holding the red leaver in low range was a temp cure. Much the same as your indent peg... Just a thought. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid

intermittent problems are the best kind of problems. you can get electrical pressure transducers you could put in just to gather some data while youre doing other stuff, like being at the helm and looking at a display. The other thing I saw on commercial fishing boats is the Heavy wax impregnated gauze that they wrap around all their outside hydraulic hose fittings. The stuff is like cosmolene or something, and nothing rusts underneath it. I think you need some of it on your winch fittings. I used it at some of my stuff I didnt want rusted, worked slick.. besides using sheep grease (Lanolin) on every metal part you need to keep serviceable. Steel boats yeah!

Doug, for the 3d printer cleanlyness is critical on the build plate. I personally clean the surface plate with 91% + Rubbing alcohol ever print. CVS sells a great wound spray bottle which is what I use. For the wet filament keep them bags of drying beads (sorry the name is slipping me of this drying bags) from items you buy put the filament in a large ziplock like bag with a bunch of them after printing. Living at sea I cannot even imagine the moster problems for the printer.

When the Pumps were dry, you have to push the Hydraulic fluid with compressed air throw the system (0,5 Bar) even tho the Oil reservoir ist above the pump. And after the pump there is a screw to open so you can bled the pump, maby that could help in the future :). Opening and a ballvalve or something - you will figure it out ;) Have fun !

38:45 I use a similar technique when bleeding clutch hydraulics. Often a tricky bubble will get caught somewhere causing squishy peddle so I use my air chuck in line with a harbor freight cylinder leakdown tester to regulate the pressure down to where it doesnt blow the plastic reservoir to bits. Then just repeatedly apply and release the air pressure to the reservoir and it will burp all the bubbles back to the surface.

After watching your video I have a something for you to consider. I used to service small hydraulic systems on printing equipment. I think you should leave that filler assembly on permanently. and lose the check valve that you mentioned It lets the fluid expand as it warms it also shows the fill level or fluid loss detector and finally it lets the system release trapped air. You may have gotten an air pocket or pressurized the intake to the pump and the whole system being under pressure may have kept it from priming back up. The suction side of the pump needs to stay at a lower pressure than the output and I think the check valve and no system pressure relief along with expansion caused the problem. If you teardown the pump and find it broke then ignore this, but if you find nothing wrong with it then think about my ideas.
@SVSeeker
@SVSeeker Күн бұрын
You can't primp the pump without the check valve. The oil would flow back into the Hundested's reservoir that is lower and also ambient pressure.

You can't catch them with a hook and there life cycle is not understood ,then there's what you see ! Weird fish!!!! Fortunately not commercially fish ,as far as I know. Re drive ,maybe that pin could be brass breakaway like a shear pin? But as you say shouldn't need it . Have you seen ' onboard Tangaroa '. They are doing a 2 engine dodge Cummins install! Replacing 2 12V detroits!!! In a 1969 alum 78' boat!!! Right up your street!!! Cheers,warren

DG-group in Finland have these diving robots. They work like robot vacuum cleaners at the bottom of ships. Think they use somekind of nylon brushes, like on street sweeping vehicles. And suction from idk vacuum or capillary to stay on the hull. Add this to your next projects :D and check them out.

@@maxjones9139 Nice, that's a very interesting journey! Hard work, but rewarding! Doing so since 3 years on our organic olive farm, and it's looking very promising. My recommendation would be to consider a 3phase electric chipper + VFD (200€) when no 3phase is available yet. Those machines are great. Less noise no gasoline, lightweight and up to 200m around your house very little power loss. Perfectly suitable for a self sufficient off-grid environment in the woods 😉

I don't know if you are going to call it at the least, not a good time to lose engine power, but if a storm comes up, probably not going to have a lot of sails up. It sure would be nice to maintain steerage with engine drivetrain. I realize you have already commented about sails being backup power.

Oh, I disagree. You can see the beginning of worst possible time/case, but will you survive it? People, including myself, resort to forms of hyperbole instead of a more accurate statement. Was it the worst possible time or a bad time? dangerous time? inconvenient timing? interrupt Miller time? happen at a frustrating time? I do have a question for Chief Engineer of SV Seeker. Would you bet your life on your drive train? Would there ever be a case where drive train failure could lead to loss/life-threatening damage to the boat? It's a sincere question, as I know nothing about boating/sailing risks other than, water/wind/waves have tremendous energy. PS. Does AAA cover boat towing? :-p

"Would you bet your life on your drive train?" Oh hell no! But I will absolutely bet my life on my ability to overcome the fear, stay focused, think creatively, and take action. And you can buy an annual contract with the tow boat services that is well worth the price.

That actually would not help as it's the pump that needs the oil to start working. Once it's going it will draw just fine. And you have to turn that filter on it's side to get it in there anyway.
