AT Thru Hike 2024 Day 4: Lance Ck. Restoration Area to Neel Gap

This highlight of our 7.3 mile day 3 was Blood Mtn. The climb up was steep, but the climb down into Neel Gap was rocky and bordered on technical. We stayed the night at Blood Mtn. Cabins.

I hiked up Blood Mountain from Neels Gap, my son and I did a night Hike in the winter and stayed at that shelter where you are at, we almost froze to death and woke with snow on us that blew through the open windows. Great Views on that mountain!!

I can't even begin to imagine staying in that shelter, especially in the winter. It would be like sleeping in a fridge!

I'm trying to mix things up. In '19, I laid a music bed throughout and used the same song in EVERY video. It took a bunch of effort to duck the video every time I started talking. I like what I'm doing this year much better.

So I like that you take pics of the gnarly trail that you either just went up or down. I haven’t seen that in any other videos this year, and I appreciate that. That is something that I like to show in my videos as well the point of view of what I have to go up or what I just came down through. So thank you for that. I hate to jinx it, but it has been incredible. Only a couple of nights below freezing, but tonight is supposed to be in the low 20s. We were situated to avoid rain, but we had planned to zero that day anyway so it worked out and didn't cost us a day.

Really enjoying following you two. Robert, how much did your pack weigh when you started and what do you estimate it weighed by the time you got to the cabin?

I just weighed out with 2L of water and 3-4 days of food and it is 37 lb. WAY, way too heavy, but I've got all my winter gear. One day I'll be able to send home a 14-oz charging brick, long johns, sleeping bag liner, fleece midlayer, and a few other things that will amount to 5-6#. I'll also get smarter about resupply so my food will be lighter.
