Many years ago when I was employed in the industrial machinery manufacturing industry, we used ring terminals on the motor leads and the wires to the motor. The connections were then bolted (machine screws, lock washers, and nuts) and taped. Less chance of losing a wire nut and shorting out a power wire, saving the wire ends from damage if there were multiple wiring changes, and easier connection changes (we always switched the connections at the motor to change the rotation). Now, after spending later years in the aerospace industry, I would use self-locking nuts WITH a lockwasher (to maintain tension on the joint during thermal cycling) and still taping the connection or shrink sleeving.

Here I got one of those VFD, not yet installed... Good thing with 3 phase motors, you'll get more torque than a single phase unit for the same HP, it's just that in your situation the speed is gonna be half due to the nature of the motor, there should be plenty of power from that 1 HP 3 phases motor. Don't worry about the order of the 3 wires, the direction change in 3 phases motors is the relation between phases, this is done either physically by inverting any 2 wires or electronically with the controller, same result... No need for capacitors or centrifugal switches to start in the right direction, in most cases, unless you toasted the windings, the only maintenance you'll ever do on a 3 phase motor is clean and change bearings. Another advantage of a 3 phases motor is that it produces less vibrations, due to a more constant torque, great on machines like surface grinders where any variation is reflected on the final result. At lower frequencies you don't get much torque, though... The next challenge at the range may be to shoot viruses, start looking for better glasses, those buggers are real small and hard to get... 😎👍

Great video. I purchased the AT1 from MySweety ($100) to use on a Baldor 3hp 230v 3 phase 60Hrz 8 amp motor. The specifications of the AT1 stated it would handle this size motor however, that was not the case. The VFD worked once but fried the capacitor due to the start up and variable torque needed during operation of running a 48" metal fan. If you're looking to run a "Heavy-Duty" motor, I would advise using a VFD that has oversized capacitors. They'll cost you more upfront but they'll last a lot longer giving you more bang for your buck in the long run.

Screw phase converters, VFD is the way to go for the small garage shop. I have one of these exact same vfds... Got it from china for 79bucks. That thing is a diamond! I had it on my 2hp bridgeport and today pulled it off and stuck it on my new lathe. My lathe has a 2 speed motor and with some help, I got BOTH speeds controlled by my vfd! Ordered another one of these today for my mill. The instructions kinda suck, but there is a shit ton of YT videos on this unit. On my mill, I still use the original barrel switch. Just hook the motor directly to the VFD, then I used x3 and X4 connected to the barrel switch. My mill is variable speed already, so the VFD gets set to 60hz and I never even touch it. Same with the lathe. I like things original and hate screwing with the front of the vfd if I don't have to.

hi just got an AT1 to run 2hp 3p motor I confused as I had plan to hook the input to a 220 v dryer/oven receptacle is this correct? or is each leg 220v
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
You are making the right connection. Each leg is 120 volts from the 220 outlet. If it is a 3 prong receptacle it will have two hot wires and one ground. See this for help; www.askmediy.com/220-volt-plugs-receptacles-configurations/ I noticed that on my AT1 when you plug it in it shows an error. Just press the stop button to clear the error and then it runs as it should. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks that helps me. One more question...One comment mentioned adding a ground to motor...If I add a ground from the motor would it need to be connected back to ground on VFD....Thanks your vedio has been a great help!

@@mharden9134 I was not able to leave the ground connected between the motor and the AT1 due to it causing multiple problems and right now I do not remember what they were. I never settle on just one source of information on youtube. Some are completely right and some are completely wrong and some are mostly right while others are mostly wrong. G'day Mate With the VFD, you can usually run the motor a bit overspeed (greater than 60Hz) providing the motor is balanced and has good bearings. However if you do run it overspeed, it may lack torque.
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
So far it is doing the job at regular speeds so I will probably not mess with it a lot. Thanks for stopping by.
@lindsaybrown73574 жыл бұрын
@@AmateurRedneckWorkshop No worries. As someone else mentioned, make sure you earth or ground the motor. This is always a standing requirement but with VFD connected motors and due to the DC switching voltages, you can get capacitive voltages charging up on the frame and shaft of the motor.
