ATA CY 12ga - Canada's Best "Cheap" Semi-Auto Shotgun; unboxing and testing

An Unboxing, first shots, and some light load cycling of an ATA CY 3" Semi-Automatic Shotgun.
Its break-in was 50 rounds of 3" Waterfowl loads on the heavy piston, followed by 200 rounds of 2 3/4" 1 1/8 1300fps target loads on the light piston. After that, it can now cycle 1oz and 1 1/8oz 1145-1200FPS loads on the light piston.
This season the gun has around 1000 rounds total, 600ish target, 400ish hunting.
ATA CY uses Mobil Chokes.

I owned this model from 2012 to 2018 and it's a great shotgun. it is very light and comfortable. With this gun, I killed Roe Deer at a distance of over 100 meters, ducks, geese and hares up to 75 meters. However, this gun has a small drawback - the return spring is easily corrodable. make sure that snow and water do not get there. if problems with recharging begin, check this spring first.

yes, you're right; the coatings on this gun are not to the standard of higher grade shotguns, so corrosion protection and making sure it's dry after it is in humidity is important.

Best patterns and results in the field were achieved with SCORE brand; 1 1/4oz 3" 1550fps loads, which is great because it's the cheapest ammunition in Canada. 2nd best was Browning BXD 1 1/4oz 3" 1450FPS, unfortunately quite expensive. 3rd was Hevi-Steel 1 1/4oz 3" 1500FPS.

a great review, subscribed. already have the cy 18 inch cyl version and am considering the one you reviewed. having two pistons might be the best way money wise to ensure light load performance. on the 18 inch the second piston is onboard.. is that the case with the game version?

No, there is no spot for the 2nd piston on board, it needs to be stored separately.

@@attananightshadow just picked up my cy 28 inch today. after installing the chosen piston and putting the forend on, you can insert the extra piston, chamfered side down into the pocket of the forend tip--then screw on the forend nut--and now you have onboard carry and less chance of missplacing the second piston.

yes, mine has a metal notched cap that holds it all together at the end of the mag tube. i used a wide flathead screwdriver and slowly leveraged it up and out (used the mag tube as the fulcrum). be sure to have one hand hovering over the cap because it's under spring tension. this is as far as i know the only way of getting access to the mag tube spring and plug. it's not the easiest or well thought out bit of the shotgun, very old fashioned / cheap way of keeping everything together.

Yes, the outer edges get dinged up a bit, scratches that will eventually turn into a small chip. I'm still using the original heavy piston, but do have a backup. This is after roughly 1250 hot waterfowl loads (3" 1 1/4oz@1550fps) I'll need to post a video in a bit showing it.

I just bought this gun. Its my first shotgun and for the price it was too good to pass up. I did have a question. I noticed the metal magazine plug comes out really easy and rattles back and forth when moving the gun. Is that normal?

the plug shouldn't be metal, it'll be a plastic insert in the mag tube that restricts the amount of rounds the tube can hold. Are you meaning the mag tube cap (at the end of the tube, farthest from the trigger) or the shell follower (a red metal insert that is viewable when the tube is empty through the loading port)? regardless, mine doesn't rattle at those 3 part locations. mine will "rattle" when the action is locked open, but that's the piston sliding up and down on the mag tube.

I am trying to remove the magazine plug, there are no instructions in my manual, and idea or video on doing that. Right now I can only get two rounds in the magazine tube and one in the Chamber, specs say it should hold 5+1

bronze and wood. the only thing camo dipping has going for it is a water barrier that doesn't need oiling. camo dipping starts being glossy after a few years unless you use dull-coat on it to keep it flat, which most people don't; so the camo serves no purpose other than a water barrier. most hunters are concealed in a blind of sorts, their gun too. if you wave around a camo shotgun, they'll still see it.

depends how much you use it more than years for repairs. The ATA has been solid for 6000 rounds without any major malfunctions due to the gun being broken. for some; 6000 rounds is 1 year, for others it could be 10-15. i'd recommend the one that fits you the best above anything.

If you pull on your barrel does it move slightly? My friend helped me clean mine and ever since then I can't get it to be tight enough not to move slightly, I've tried everything it seems, I don't know if it is suppose to or if I'm doing something wrong, I won't shoot it until it doesn't move though which really throws a wrench in hunting

I just checked mine; it doesn't move. The ATA Venza does reciprocate, but the CY shouldn't have any barrel movement once it's been put together properly and the nut is tightened. If i was you I'd take the barrel off and try reassembling it. Make sure the bolt is pulled back into the locked position, then insert the barrel into the receiver, make sure the beginning of the rib is flush with the receiver before putting on the foregrip and tightening that down.

the only think i can think of that could be causing that slop (apart from not being assembled properly or a catastrophic failure in the receiver/action) would be the plastic insert at the end of the receiver that the foregrip fits into; if that part was missing or broken there might enough space for the barrel to slop around 1-2mm at most.

@@minnowstomonsters8462 it's a little piece of plastic that the front grip would fit into, it's lipped and is held in by 2 flathead screws. it's on the very front of the receiver. it might be missing or damaged, i'm not sure. maybe check the foregrip for any damage as well, cracks. I can't see it being the barrel or the receiver, but stranger things.

if it was new it should come with a heavy piston as well (two total). is yours the 3.5" model or the 3" model? perhaps there is a difference there.

depends where the rattle is coming from. i'd check the front swivel stud, mine was loose / eventually fell off and was replaced. it rattled, but doesn't anymore. if it's in the rear of the gun it could be the stock nut is loose. it could also be the plug if they've changed it. I'd take the gun apart and shake each piece to isolate it. Mine doesn't currently rattle. edit: make sure your fore-end cap is screwed down properly. As long as the bolt, operating rod, and trigger group aren't rattling, it shouldn't be a big deal. buddy had a mossberg 930 and the plug really rattled a lot in the mag tube.

I'd contacted weatherby, they were able to get me a replacement heavy piston. It uses the same parts as the weatherby SA-08, so you just need to ask to get one for an SA-08 12 gauge.

I went old fashioned and used the heavy piston and shot a box of 3" waterfowl loads through it, then swapped to the light piston and used 1 1/8th 1250+fps target loads for a couple cases or so, hunting season came around so I'd switched back to the heavy piston and put roughly 3 cases of 3" through it. next summer doing target shooting it would cycle anything, even 7/8th oz loads on the light piston.

I just used it on a pheasant hunt yesterday, worked flawlessly in a day that started out at -31*C with the windchill. The only time it's failed was due to old swollen ammo, it would fire and eject it, but wouldn't go into battery on the reload. This wasn't the gun's fault. It's a Weatherby SA08 by another name, they're well liked guns and have been cycle tested to 6000-8000 rounds. I'm at about 3000 rounds and have noticed the heavy piston is being chewed up a bit. Parts support would be my main concern long term for this gun, it uses weatherby parts, but contacting ATA directly has been a nightmare; so you'd need to buy weatherby parts. I haven't needed any parts yet, but did try to contact ATA to inquire about them and heard nothing back. For the price, it's an excellent shooter and I'd recommend it to anyone on a budget looking for something that will go bang 3 times in a row that's faster than a pump.

I can't get my ata automatic 12ga to eject a shell or shoot automatically. I have my 3rd type of shell. I tried federal 2 3/4 1oz game load. It still won't eject.

hopefully it doesn't shoot automatically, that would be a malfunction. some troubleshooting: will it cycle a 3" waterfowl load while the heavy piston is installed? (these guns along with many sem-auto shotguns are supposed to be broken in by shooting a couple boxes of heavy type loads) which piston is being used on the lighter loads? (it should be the light piston) is it properly cleaned? is it over-oiled? (too much oil will jam the firearm) will it eject a round being manually cycled by hand? (if not, then it could be an ejector/extractor that needs an adjustment)

Many 3" semi auto won't cycle a 2 3/4" shell. There is however you can adjust the issue located inside the front support. To a lower "gas" piston

There is a 3.5" chambered model, but if it is a 3" you cannot use 3.5" shells in it.

It's doing well; the only replaced part has been the heavy load piston which Weatherby sent me as they share parts. It has over 5000 rounds through it, most of them have been 3" hunting loads.

the piston's are weighted and ribbed in a manner to slow the bolt speed. the heavy piston is the most restrictive for slowing the bolt speed. if the action moves with too much force too often, it could damage the action / wear out the springs.

the venza is a much more modern gas system, which tends to reduce recoil more and doesn't need to change pistons to fire different types of shells like the CY does. The CY is very simple, but pistons need to be swapped from light to heavy depending on the shells. Pros and cons to both, I think both would serve you well. I haven't heard anything bad about the Venza apart from it has it's own choke system that doesn't have aftermarket support, whereas my CY uses the very common mobil chokes.

I do both Goose and Duck. It’s only a 3” chamber. I have a 3.5” gun, but almost never use it or the shells. 3” works really well if you’ve patterned your gun with various ammos to see which works the best.

With the plug in it will hold 2 in the tube, 1 in the chamber. With the plug out, it will hold 4 shells in the tube and 1 in the chamber.

Also depends on the shell size if you run 2-3/4 you may get 5+1. If you can find the adapter and run “shorty” shells you’ll get even more!

the only additional part i got for it was an extended choke tube; the thread pattern is Mobil Choke, it's a Carlson Cremator. the shotty came with shims and the trigger was good from the factory. It'll use the same parts as a weatherby SA-08 when it breaks. Thanks

I can’t get mine to cycle 2 3/4” 1oz shells nothing in 2 3/4” I put a 3” in & it cycles just fine anyone know anything about this or a fix for it

Which piston is installed? 2 3/4 loads generally won't cycle on the heavy piston, especially lighter target loads. Make sure the light piston is installed for lighter loads. If the light piston is installed, check to make sure your gun isn't over lubricated; especially on the operating rod and the piston itself. You can also check the gas ports in the barrel to make sure they're not obstructed. Do not use solvent around the gas ports... there's an o-ring in front of the ports that needs just a bit of oil on it so it doesn't dry out. (a lot of semi-autos have this) The last trouble shooting I'd suggest is clean the chamber really well, though it's probably not that if you can manually eject a shell without issue. I only use the heavy piston for 3" waterfowl loads, ranging from 1 1/8 to 1 1/4oz at 1450-1550fps... last season i personally put down around 240-250 birds, using about 400 rounds hunting in all kinds of weather and had zero malfunctions. it's important if it's cold out that you use a minimal amount of quality oil. This season has been trouble free as well. On the light piston they should cycle out of the box 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz 1200fps loads and faster, but I would advise breaking the gun in on the light piston using 1 1/8 1300fps target loads. Shoot about 100 of those, then swap out to the heavy piston and shoot a box of Waterfowl loads. After that "break in" mine will cycle 1oz 1300-1400fps loads on the light piston no problem along with 1 1/8oz 1145fps loads.

Yes I used the light piston on 2 3/4 shooting 1oz 7 1/2 for dove hunting I load it & shoot & it fires & that’s it Iv got to manually eject the fired shell. If I put in the heavy piston & shoot 3” shell it fires & works fine & Iv also tried several different size 2 3/4 & it don’t do anything Thanks

hello, for the turkish gun armsan better than ata trust me i tried both for me my versamax work like a monster from the lightest shot to 3 1/2 beside i have a fabarm with a barrel 90cm test it and you will see the shot with a long range

thanks for the input; Versamax and Fabarm aren't in the same price tier as an ATA or Armsan; I'm sure the Armsan is fine. none of the people I hunt with use 3 1/2" shells, it's simply not needed. a properly setup decoy spread, blind placement, and knowing how and when to call should have birds coming easily within 30-40 yards of the blind(s) if they were scouted properly the night before.
