Let me try to summarize: They started in 2015, they always use school uniforms. The group's guiding principle. "In a time when only exemplar citizens are acknowledged, we strive to defy a narrow-minded society by embracing individuality and freedom." As with K-pop (korean pop), J-pop (japanese pop) also is dominated by idol groups (which do sound great and look great but the music is very formulaic, and you get to a point where they all sound similar to one another). This is a vocal/dance group has position itself a little bit as the anti-idol option, with music that is different (mixing generas like Jazz, Hip-hop, classic rock, garage rock, a little bit of punk even, and traditional japanese sounds... even Funk and Ska), and also with lyrics that go against the grain of what japanese cultare look as acceptable and traditional (talking about difficult topics mainly focused in their view -which is the japanese youth point of view as they started the group when they were aroung 15 years of age, and currently their are on their young twenties). One last thing, they (the members) do their own coreographies, which are also so different from all other J-pop groups, chaotic but in a free, fun, and awesome way. I you want a recommendation, I suggest "Seishun wo kirisaki hado - official video". Be warned, you might go into a rabbit hole here. They are really awesome.

Atarashii Gakko is just "new school." In Japan, the group's full name is "Atarashii Gakko no Leaders." Japanese fans simply call them as "Leaders." Outside Japan, they drop the "no Leaders" part of the name to make it easier for non-Japanese fans to remember. Some fans just call them "AG."
