What better way to give the first Atari 2600 longplay than to play the GREATEST! GAEM! EVAR!! If you don't realize this is the GREATEST! GAEM! EVAR!!, then there's something wrong with you.
It is said this and Pac-Man were responsible for the North American video game crash of 1983. It is also said that unsold E.T. carts (and other Atari gaemz) were dumped in a landfill, never to be seen again.
The goal: find 3 telephone pieces, phone home, and wait at landing zone. Along the way to stop E.T. are FBI agents or something (steal telephone pieces) and scientists (drags E.T. to the lab. Can be escaped). There are also Reese Pieces, which restores "health" (the number on the bottom) or give to Elliot to increase score (giving him 9 will make all humans on screen go away and nets one telephone piece). There are also zones that you can use "powers", with "Call Ship" being one.

ColinTheGamer Pc run around. This takes energy which is the number. The dots are candy. The blobs are holes. The icon in the middle is important. Arrows move you one screen that way. You can press fire and transport. The eye let's you eat candy for health. The question mark shows if a pit has a phone part. Drop in, grab it and get out. The 3 line symbol sends the FBI agent (brown dude. He steals phone parts) or scientist (grey dude who takes you to the lab). Once you have all pieces. Walk around like an idiot and find the alien face. The counter starts then up to the forrest to wait for the counter to finish. You must be on the landing pad to be taken home. The next screen is some score crap you don't care about.

Not really. You had to read the manual that came with the game. It wasn't like you could just pick it up and start playing it. Once you knew how to play it its not a bad game. I've played horrible games. This one kinda got a unfair reputation.

Development times were typically 6 to 18 months. Negotiating the license took so long they had 6 weeks to make the Christmas season. It shouldn’t have been possible. Warshaw volunteered. Spielberg wanted a Pac-Man clone. Warshaw designed the game on a cube works in 1 week and spent 5 making it and debugging it. That is seriously impressive, especially considering it’s good (despite its commercial failure).

I’m happy that AVGN said the game isn’t bad. The game isn’t great, but it is good, and considering how quickly it was developed (6 weeks instead of 6 to 18 months) and that Spielberg wanted it to be a Pac-Man clone, it kind of a miracle. It was a commercial failure though, but that was largely due to an over production of carts (including Pac-Man) under the assumption people would collect them, paying a high licensing fee, and the market being flooded with bad games and consoles that made them cheap and drowned out good games and made them look too expensive.

You look for phone parts on a cube world in the pits, assemble them, phone home, and get picked up. The FBI agent tries to steal your phone parts. The scientist tries to take you back to DC. The spaceship will not come if people are around. Use the glyphs to assist you: arrow to jump, question mark to light up phone parts, recall to send the agent or scientist home, call to call Eliot, phone to phone home, and the landing zone is just a landing zone. Moving takes energy. Collect Reese’s Pieces and either eat them for energy or give them to Elliott for bonus points at stage’s end. Feint and Elliott will revive you twice. Your score at stage’s end is based on your energy plus the Reese’s bonus. That’s it. Tips: try not to run, use arrows as a last escape resort. Always catch yourself when entering the pits, a hard impact hurts and may stick you in the mud. If you find the flower in a pit, revive it for an extra revive. Careful when exiting pits, that part of the game is not well balanced and you can fall back in when your neck distends if you are in a poor position.

Compared to Laser Blast, E.T. is freaking Chrono Trigger for the 2600. Howard Scott Warshaw was a brilliant man who made the mistake of creating a game that challenged himself. The problem was that he is smarter than 99.9% of the entire population of earth, meaning that a game that challenges him will be nigh unto impossible for everyone else.
