If only developers made use of tricks like this back in the day..

What machine was this on? It seems that the Atari computers were just as capable as the C64 for software sprites.

More so, because the Atari 8bit is way faster.

I must agree, unfortunatelly. but remeber that C64 is construction of 80s and Atari 78. between them there is 4 years of difference. sound is better on C64 due to many hardware waveforms including sinus triangle saw. I had atari, but I've seen C64 at friends

This is a demo for Atari 8bits machines, 400, 800, 600XL, 800XL, 65XE, 130XE. If you look my others video about Atari sprites you'll find demos with more speed and more amount of sprites

@zombiemod : More capable in what? Ability to display sprites or high resolution in color? No doubt it was. However in no way i could do more colors in general, and it was 80% slower machine in "pure" computational power. Each machine had its strengths and weaknessess and just because C64 was more suitable for *arcade games* it does not make it better in general. Type Project M 2.0 in KZbin to see an example of something what Atari can do, but C64 cannot for several reasons at once.

Do you have an Atari?... I have both systems Atari and C64.

Atari 8-bit indeed is very limited as for the HW sprites capabilities and it shows on its games. C-64 with its 8 HW sprites has much more to offer but still, 8 sprites is not enough. So if we havent got support from HW we need to go software, but wait, super fast Z80 CPU is on Spectrum - only....

Z80 is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. Compared to the 6502, it's half speed. Only reason the spectrum preforms similar to the Atari 8 bit is because it runs at double the clock speed.

Atari had four 'players' 8x192 1-color (or two 4-color), four 'missiles' 1x192 1-color. Yes, worse than the C64. Atari had better sfx (example is engine noise in A2600 Combat), 256 color palette (NES had 64 color), display list (any resolution and palette at each vertical line). The Amiga is an Atari relative: tall sprites, display-list coprocessor (copper), 4,096 color palette, etc. I bet this uses the newer GTIA 9-color screen. The c64 used ugly pre-set 16 colors.
