You Americans are really lucky to have such a vivid arcade scene back in the day. Over here in Europe we rarely had an Arcade so cabs over here are rare to find these days, let alone an Asteroids cab like this.

+MrAtariable Yeah I've never understood why they weren't just as big in Europe! Maybe import/export problems back in the day? Who knows!

We were. They were everywhere. Not just arcades, but they were in department stores, conveient stores, grocery stores, landry mats, hotel lobbies, dentist offices... And some movie theaters, restarurants, and convient stores even had their own mini arcades. Amusement parks usually had a lot of good games. Or any tourist areas, especially beach areas. Many beach area arcades were open air type. They were probably in other places I can't think of.

It's hard to describe how exciting it was in 1979 when this machine landed in the arcade. I can still feel it now, the newness, the strangeness and wonder of it.

I bought a $200 Arcade 1 up tabletop Asteroids and it's great, it also has Asteroids Deluxe built in as well. It plays just like I remember, probably not as good as the real thing, but for 200 clams it's amazing, and it has all the graphics of the original and it sits quite comfortably on a table taking up very little room. It's been so long since I got to play this game it's great someone is making it accessible to the masses after all these years. Also bought a Defender too, both play just like the originals.

By the way, I LOVE how you make all that work sounds so easy! I know if thing or two about 80s computers… I owned for Atari mega 4 ST computers during the late 80s at the Berkeley College of music in Boston… It still wasn’t easy even then…

@@pigknickers2975 Thanks for responding! - I started My JLAB Recording/CD Mastering Studio in West Hollywood back in 1993. Back then the Multi-Track recording was still done on a Tascam MS-16 - 16 track 1" Analog Recorder (AMAZING!) to a (brand new at the time) Mackie 32 by 8 bus board. At that time I was (unfortunately) 3 years into the decade nightmare of doing all of my mixes and sourcing CD Masters from DAT digital Audio Tape. Sadly I still have over 300 DATs and ZERO of my 4 original DAT recorders now. It's on my "used gear to buy list! And lastly, in 1993 - I had a variety of 4 Atari MEGA STs with 4 megs of RAM. I used one of them as my main sequencer using cubase and another one was connected to Hybrid Arts Digital Master 4 track digital audio Editor/Recorder for Doing CD mastering. I LITERALLY used my ATARI STs in my Studio until 2005! (Last I saw them was in a dumpster in North Hollywood!lol) now in 2023 I'm starting all over again at age 57 with a Mac Mini -1 and Logic Pro X. I HATE learning new things! lol Wish Me Luck?!? - I'd love to hear more about your experience in "The Good Old Days"! Cheers! - Judson & Buddy! - God Bless You ALL 🙂

@@judsonleach5248 Hi nice to hear from you. I started my music career at 19 in 1987 working for TEAC/Tascam in the UK head office. There I learned the ropes, dealt with musicians and studios, learned about boards and tape and generally became immersed in the business. I bought an ST from a firm I dealt with for £50 (they did me a real favour) and built an 8 track studio at home around Fostex M80 and a Seck board - cheapest option even though I had my Tascam staff discount. Got a job as a keyboard player with a named group, big in Europe, and started my life as a session engineer and programmer with an Akai S900 and the then brand new Cubase software soon after. After some success I got top flight management who put me with a named singer and we built a studio together to write an album. That room was based around a 1024Mb ST and a Mackie 24/8 - we all had’em! - and a pair of Akai DR4d’s. From there we got a 6 album deal with a major but that didn’t really work out in the long term, making me switch into the film business for the next ten years. Eventually in 98 I went to the Mac for sequencing but it was probably too early looking back, the machines weren’t powerful enough to replace the studio I had then. I ditched Cubase for Logic and have been using it for 25 years now. Pro X is really my favourite software ever, the design, the features, the library, it’s practically perfect. You will love it on an M1. After the deal I went into the UK film scene, working on a few big productions as my partner was a leading music supervisor at that time. I’ve loved my journey through music, so glad that it happened, don’t think it could happen today. I also have a business as a Apple consultant to creatives with dozens of clients, thank God for this, it’s too hard to eat as a muso now! I remember the Hybrid Arts system, I used an early Digidesign thing on the Mega ST but it was so unreliable. I once lost a day of edits for no reason at all. Nowadays I do mastering + restoration of old records and remakes for film and TV. Soundalikes of a very high quality, that kind of thing. I’m also working with a young singer on some great new material. I too had hundreds of DATS and spent a year transferring them about 5 years back. It’s very boring haha. Did that with a OTARI DAT and a digital connection I got off eBay. Pro X really is the best. I hope you’ve got the 16Gb model, you will need it. I run 32Gb of RAM on a 5k iMac, better for me I find, even though the i7 is not as fast it doesn’t matter in real terms. I use dedicated UAD hardware for the plugins mainly anyway - another thing I’d highly recommend. All the best on your journey, learning stuff at our age gets harder that’s for sure. Logic has a great inline help system and there’s always help on youtube for when you can’t figure it out. All the best from the UK ;-)

*Sam Brenner:* There is only one objective in _Asteroids._ That is to destroy every rock and every saucer. You don't wanna get hit by any of these boulders. That's why I recommend staying in the middle. _[later]_ I want you to focus mostly on the ships. Every 10,000 points, you get another triangle ship. That's a good thing.

Bryan Roth We usually put the 'full wrap' overlay on the control panel, but this one was so nice and original we left it, there's a small area that's been touched up black that you can see when the light hits it but it was still in good original shape. Really cool to see one holding up so well after all this time!

The upright Asteroids arcade game has always been; and still is my favorite upright game. Not just because of the vintage black and white monitor but the overall vintage style of the cabinet. Even if I could own one upright arcade game; this would be the one. Are the audio and video controls easy to access on these games? I keep thinking they are on the back side of the monitor where it would be almost impossible to see what the video is doing. If it was possible; I would add a user volume control on the outside for easier access of the audio level since it would be adjusted occasionally. Looks very easy to repair from watching the repair videos.

BTW - YES…. The year WAS 1979… I absolutely know that and probably have legal standing on that issue… Lol because that’s the year we were in that weird hotel where I had the roll of quarters and had the best hour of my life! FACT! - That hour is permanently burned into my happy place in my childhood memory! I wish words can describe it… But DUDE!
