Atari has an uphill battle to break out of the nostalgia releases and use their huge IP library to create new games. They’ve done the “recharged” versions of many games, Yars included, and they’ve done a new version of Haunted House. Yars is a name that still has some familiarity with gamers. Whether this will keep the name alive, we’ll see. But, Atari has to take bold chances if they are going to stay viable.
@ModernClassic5 ай бұрын
It's worth keeping an open mind about, but I think when people say it's "not a Yar's game", it's probably less about it not being what they expected and more that it looks like it could really be *any* kind of game. It looks like a game they already had that just got slapped into the "Yar's Universe". To me it also just has kind of a mobile game look and feel; it's kind of clunky, at least in its current state. But we'll see when it actually launches.

Most of the complaints I’ve come across are of the “This isn’t a Yars game,” which I guess I understand. If you’d asked me what a modern “Yars” game would be, I would’ve guessed something more akin like an auto-scrolling shooter or something. That said, I know Wayforward typically does good work, and I have every confidence that the game will turn out well, so I’m more than happy to keep an open mind about the game.

There are strata of bad to explore. Spare yourself the DEI/Pride force-feeding and play the old Gameboy Advance Tron 2.0: neither have anything to do with Yars Revenge, but you'll still get to "hack the system". 🤦♂️

@@johndough8115 This right here is the reason. Yars Revenge was unique at the time when it came out. How many times have we seen this new "Yars" game in the past couple decades? It brings nothing new or interesting. I understand that it's harder to make a new and unique game nowadays, but this one looks literally like a platformer you would see on the Ouya or a mobile device.

honestly, you can't really appease everyone, especially aging GenX Atari fans (of which I am one). Even "Yar's Recharged" is a step too-far for them, let alone anything with modern resolutions and ... gasp!... polygons. They want the comfort of what they grew up with, which was pixels, very simple rules and 1-2 buttons. I get it... and if that was my (only) jam, I wouldn't try to destroy anything that wasn't those things... I would just say (to myself), not for me... and scroll on.
@tonybarnes29205 ай бұрын
@@SlippinnnJimmy wow... you *really* have some issues you may want to discuss with someone. Be clear and concise with your words, please. It's 2024, and you don't have to hide anymore... man-up! Say it out-loud. I haven't hated on it, other than to say "They missed an opportunity to remake Major Havoc" and I stand behind that. I think you replied with something is coming, and that's cool. Yars always was a somewhat 1 dimensional game. A really *good* game at the time, and maybe this serves to do more worldbuilding for it. I just kind of feel like they should have taken it in a different direction, like a 2.5d roguelike shooter, something akin more to metal slug, with that they could have done an equal amount of worldbuilding while staying in the spirit of the game.
@nickpalance36225 ай бұрын
Ooohhhh I remember playing Major Havoc back in the day! I really liked it and probably still would tho’ I think the controls are important. I didn’t remember the name of the game for YEARS just that it seemed to be using a Tempest cabinet. Or at least that fine fine rotary knob. Didn’t 1-Up include MH in a cabinet? I got to touch/feel a 1-up with a knob and it was nas-t ! Rough and just plain awful feeling. Wouldn’t want to play MH or Tempest on that.
@tonybarnes29205 ай бұрын
I agree that a 2.5D side-scroller makes WAY MORE SENSE as Major Havoc, than "Yars". I actually pitched as much to Atari, but alas... 🤷♂ Either way, I'm willing to give this game a chance, not because I feel it's "Yars", but because it looks like it might be fun and WayForward are good people. Honestly, they're the only other place I could think of that would've done a better job with my Strider 2014 game, than myself. 😅

I understand how people may be upset that this “isn’t a Yars game,” but I feel that this could help bring in new players interested into the IP. I mean, I’m not sure if the average person is willing to play a game that’s over 40 years old, but considering how this game seems to play in a Metroidvania style that’s very popular nowadays (Hollow Knight follows that game play stile and lot of people like that game), this seems like a good way for Atari to adapt to the changing times. (And you may be thinking that Atari is already getting people interested in old game like the original Yars’ Revenge through their countless compilations, but how many times can they use nostalgia time and time again before people feel like they’ve had enough?) That’s just how I feel about this game using a beloved Atari IP.

When you talked about New Star Trek vs Old I was thinking more like the comparing the old Star Trek from the 60s to the new that came out in the 90s. There was a big gap in time between the 2 versions there too. At the end of the day, sales will tell the story of whether this new style gives Atari a way to make their old IP more marketable in the future.
@SternSupremacy2 ай бұрын
Millennial here. I missed out on Atari, so I admittedly have never heard of Yars. This game caught my eye because of the colorful and exciting visuals as well as what looks to be a solid metroidvania. Also, and Idk if you mentioned this in the video, but it’s developed by WayForward, who’s the team behind the Shantae series, as well as River City Girls. Also, if anyone played it, the criminally underrated Mummy Demastered game. I give props to Atari for trying to perhaps modernize one of their ol IPs. Imagine a new version of something like Galaga, Centipede or Asteroids. They might not be the most tantalizing endeavor, but you get my point. They’ve done so with Frogger, Pac-Man and Rollercoaster Tycoon with decent success.
@GenXGrownUp2 ай бұрын
Hiya, Stern. I put about 15 hours into it and can say it's a bit of a watered-down metroidvania, but enjoyable. It doesn't add much at all to the Yars' Revenge story as it kind of only exists in the same universe with only the tiniest bit of cross-over.
@paxhumana20152 ай бұрын
WayForward also helped in making a little franchise that is called Bloodstained as well.
@AS-xx7tw5 ай бұрын
I think a strong point that’s made in the video is that, like other companies, Atari is seeking avenues to interest younger generations of gamers in some of their intellectual properties. I think that’s a good thing, honestly. In today’s time, you’re probably going to draw more interest with a metroidvania title than a traditional space shooter. Honestly, it’s a creative approach I find laudable. Some of my acquaintances who enjoy rogue like games got a kick out of the recent Haunted House game. I’m a huge fan of the original but I enjoyed the new version as well, even though the mechanics were very different in most respects.
@anthonyspecf5 ай бұрын
I think it is just an odd genre choice for a new Yars game which feels a bit off--putting. I think had it gone more of a space shooter direction like R-Type, Gradius, etc... with a shielded core/cannon at the end of levels it may have gone over a bit better. If they went full 3D, even a similar game to Descent might have worked. I think the style of game made just seemed foreign to the Yars theme.
@GenXGrownUp5 ай бұрын
I'm guessing Atari knows what Howard is working on even if we don't. And if it's more of the space-shooter as you suggest, maybe later in hindsight, having this title be so different might make good sense (to avoid too much commonality). Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. 😁

I'm a huge fan of Atari both old & new and have particularity enjoyed the Re-charged series but some of their other recent releases aren't for me but I'm glad others have enjoyed them. The negative reactions I see for not just this but for other established companies in the gaming sphere is pure and simple "gatekeeping" where certain community members think they have the right to decide what is and isn't allowed and try to make this view (their view) appear to be the "general consensus". I'm just curious why a lot of people (in these comments) seem to consider a core tenant of Yars "innovation" and lament this game for "not being innovative" or "a collection of old ideas slapped together". I'm going to let you in on a little secret; EVERY GAME we made back then was at the same level of "innovation" that you attach to Yars, because practically every game we made back then was "new". But I don't think anyone attaches this "has to be innovative" yoke to ever game from the past. Such a strange take, to me.
After their “The Mummy Demastered,” I have faith in the “Wayforward + metroidvania” combo.

Negative "fans" are why I really had to step away from developing for the VCS and who knows... after 40 years, maybe all the "fans" will finally push me out with their "fandom"... so, they can be stuck with developers who don't actually listen or acknowledge their existences outside of milking them like an ATM.

Well... 98% of the hate is probably because a Yar is an intelligent species of Fly, not a hot teenage girl. If the protagonist was a hot teenage cybernetic housefly, that would be OK. It might be a reasonably good game, but it needs to take place in the actual YARS universe. If they made a new Donkey Kong game where Donkey Kong was a goth teenage boy and not a gorilla, it would not really be a Donkey Kong game.
@GenXGrownUp5 ай бұрын
While the intelligent fly isn't the protagonist, according to the trailer and artwork, they do appear in the game. My understanding is that EMI will encounter the Yar species, though she herself is not of that race.
@paxhumana20152 ай бұрын
@10MARC, then that hate should be to the s t u p i d i t y of the people that make such comments. Also, saying that Yars' Rising isn't a part of the Yars Universe is like saying that the Netflix ReBoot series isn't canonical to the classic ReBoot series when even the source material of the classic ReBoot series LITERALLY SAYS THAT HUMAN HACKERS ARE BEHIND THE MALICIOUS PROGRAMS THAT ARE IN MAINFRAME, AS WELL AS ELSEWHERE IN ITS LITTLE CYBER-UNIVERSE, AND THAT THE REBOOT SEQUEL SERIES SHOWS THE EVIDENCE OF HOW IT ALL HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE! Yes, the plot, and execution, were fumbled badly with that ReBoot sequel series, but the original cartoon wasn't exactly great shakes, either, and that is what those m o r o n s need to realize, just like the i d i o t s that praised the two previous Yars games, and yet slam this game, need to realize that they weren't great ones in the classic Atari library, either, to be honest.

I played Yars Revenge when I was six (yes I'm Gen x) and it has all the complexity of breakout. Maybe it’s that “Mario” games feature Mario (yes, even Dr.Mario 😔) but plenty of games are set in the “Mario universe” that (1) don’t feature Mario and subsequently (2) don’t use “Mario” in the title. I think there is a lot of misplaced anger that needs to be directed at “marketing” - see Douglas Adams’ “trilogy” for reference (GPP feature ; who will be / was against the wall when the revolution comes) I’ve heard that fruity snacks and drinks need to have a color=fruit for us dumb dumbs (ie consumers) and red/pink has too much competition so apple had to be “green 🍏 apple” and okay but totally inventing the notion of a blue raspberry?!? 😂 just for marketing purposes?? What if someone wanted to offer the choices of both raspberry AND blueberry for a given product? Other than dark and bright blue I guess it’s not feasible. Stop the world I want to get off.

So imagine when they made Mariokart that your character was a human from our world who drives a regular car, that has mario painted on it. That's what the issue is. I feel like I agree with most of the complaints. I don't think the game will be garbage: I have yet to play a bad WayForward game. Furthermore, I like the MetroidVania genre, even though I think it's becoming a bit crowded, mostly because the indies making them have the same love for the genre's forebearers that I do. I feel like the problem is this approach will fail to capture both the existing audience, and the one they want to cultivate, precisely due to the dual problems of how little it resembles old-school Yars, and how little it will stand out on the game storefronts in a sea of Metroid wannabes. Basically, a marketing problem rather than a quality issue.

Ha, the thing about the 'this isn't $franchise' though is that newer writers are rewriting old stuff and not creating anything new that is enjoyable to watch as the originals. For something like Yar's Rising. I think of it more like ST:TNG where they add to the story of the universe, and refine some of the plot lines. And unlike ST:D, where they just wrote in that Spock had an adopted sister, taking a well established history/character and making it their own... it is the equivalent of bands doing a 'covers only' album... looking at you, Guns N Roses and The Spaghettie Incident...

Let me preface this by saying whether you like the game or not, that’s perfectly fine. Everyone has personal tastes. But I’ve been on Atariage since like 2004 and I’m the retro community for longer. One thing I have learned is that there is a small but extremely vocal group of fans who just hate on everything that’s new/different. I’m not talking about the folks who are just like ‘nah that doesn’t look like Yars I’ll pass’. I’m talking about the ones who rant on every video about it they can find on KZbin with extra caps lock. A certain sort of fan thrives on negativity like that. They’re in every fan group that gets big enough. Do anything new that doesn’t meet their expectations, they start yelling. When it comes out, if it’s bad, they gloat. If it’s good, crickets. Just is what it is. I ignore it. They’re a much smaller group than the volume indicates.

I very much appreciate your insight. Thanks for that. Based on what I've seen, it doesn't seem like just a vocal minority in this case, and I'm not one to "ignore it and it'll go away," because I'm always worried it'll do the opposite and grow! Appreciate you watching! 😁

@@johndough8115 I have no problem with legit criticism, and I specifically said so in my post I’m personally perfectly fine with folks not liking it. It is a pretty large departure from a single screen arcade game. But some of us are open to new things, especially from developers like Wayforward who have a track record of fun games. And maybe don’t insult or belittle those who don’t share your opinions, which is what you have: an opinion, not a fact. Maybe turn caps lock off, take a breath, and realize people do not have ‘bad taste in games’ who differ in tastes than you. The Shantae games, Alien Infestation, Bloodstained, and River City Girls are all great sidescrollers. I expect this one will be no different.

Like I said in my first reply on the demo. I like the Impossible Mission, Metroid angle because I love those games. What I don't like in this Yar Rising game, is the art design. First of all I have an innate hatred to people with blue/green/pink hair :D And I think since Yar is a bug like creature, the protagonist should've been a bug like creature with bug like features to help it across the worlds. It's a missed oppertunity to take the "Metroprime" genre into a new direction, like Yar's did for shooters. A missed opportunity and lack of creativity for sure. But if it's a tenner like all the other Atari Recharged games, then I'll definitely add it to my Siwtch. More than that, I probably hold out for the new Zelda 2D like game announced yesterday.

Yeah, old video games basically had a backstory (if that) and yet they never ended - you kept going until hitting a game over. Having a fleshed out story makes it feel more like I'm doing something. It's something I love about modern games, along with their better atmosphere.

I see more good comments than bad on the Steam forum from the demo. I haven't played it yet and it looks like the only way now is to run the exe directly as they removed the Play option from inside Steam. To me it looks cool from the trailer. The hate I'm guessing is on the AA forums from the boomers who can't handle anything new. If it's not from the 80s with a handful of pixels in total it's just not good. lol

I had a Yars game for the 360. It was an on-rails third person shooter where the characters bore more resemblance to what you might expect from a Yars game than this. But that was universally panned as well, as I recall. But it wasn't a bad game to just pick up and play from time to time.

I'm 43 years old, and I personally have the belief that old things need to evolve in order to stay relevant. For example, look at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. It's got a totally different art style, has the turtles acting like, and being voiced by, actual teenagers, and it's got a totally different feel to its storytelling. I loved it, and I actually find the old 80s cartoon unwatchable these days! I've been largely unable to truly get into my childhood nostalgia as the old cartoons and games don't hold up anymore to me, though occasionally we get something like Super Mario Bros Wonder which is unquestionably a combination of retro and modern ideas. (Ironically it was my older brother who tried the game and complained "I feel like I've played this before.") I am actually unfamiliar with the original Yars Revenge so I don't see this as desecrating my childhood. But I don't see it as being connected to the old game either other than some references, even if it was allegedly Wayforward who approached Atari with the idea. Finally, I want to point out that reviving old things in a new form is a mega common executive tactic that attempts to bridge audiences to bring in more money. An example is Harriet the Spy. It was a 1964 book, then a 1996 movie, and now it's a 2021 cartoon which goes off in a completely different direction to become a standard (albeit fun imo) slice of life cartoon. It's like executives say "bring back old popular thing" and creative types try to turn it into their own idea. Or the reverse, creative people come up with an idea, then an executive attaches it to a popular franchise (which is where Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order came from). It's just what companies do. Anyway, great video. Thanks for making it!
@paxhumana20152 ай бұрын
@daytimesky, the harsh truth is that Super Mario Brothers Wonder is a step downward in the fact that it relies more on gimmicks than it does actual good game play. Look at Super Mario Brothers 3 versus Super Mario Brothers Wonder, or even Super Mario World...what was in Super Mario Brothers 3 were not gimmicks, but, rather, things that not only expanded the lore of the Mario Universe, but that those new Power Ups, those new features, and the video game itself, were all components of the Mario Universe that could literally make, or break, the Mario franchise, as well as Nintendo, and that they were both actually useful, game changing, and needed in order to beat the video game. Meanwhile, as for Super Mario Brothers Wonder, the four new Power Ups that were in the game were not really innovative. and they also felt way more forced, as well as unnatural, than what was in Super Mario Brothers 3. Moreover, they were essentially retreads of things that had already previously existed in Mario video games. The Drill Mushroom was simply a retread (no pun intended) of the Mole Tank Power Up from the Yoshi's Island games, except that it was not time based, as the Mole Tank was in the Yoshi's Island video games. The Elephant Fruit was merely a more mobile version of the Rock Mushroom that was in Super Mario Galaxy 2, as well as an ability that cleared more Bricks simultaneously than the Blue Shell from New Super Mario Brothers, and, unlike the Rock Mushroom that was in Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Elephant Fruit was not a time based Power Up in Super Mario Brothers Wonder. The Wonder Flower was basically turning the environment into a Power Up that was goal/area based, as well as was basically a glorified version of the Exclamation Point Boxes that were in the Yoshi's Island video games, and/or the P-Switches that were in Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario World, except that their usefulness were a mixed bag, rather than being consistently useful, like the Exclamation Point Boxes and the P-Switches were in their respective video games. (The P-Switches are also in the Super Mario Maker video games as well). The Bubble Flower was the only new Power Up that was in Super Mario Brothers Wonder that actually was innovative, as well as useful, and, even then, it was pretty much in a situation like the Penguin Suit that was made from the second through fifth entries of the New Super Mario Brothers series replacing the Frog Suit from Super Mario Brothers 3, as well as also limiting it to the appearances in the Super Mario Maker video game series. The Bubble Flower is pretty much an upgraded version of the Cloud Flower that was in Super Mario Galaxy 2, although it is a much needed upgrade to the Cloud Flower. Now, with that being said, aside from some New Enemies, some new tactics that would be needed in order to beat said Enemies, and some new Playable Characters (thanks for FINALLY making Princess Daisy playable in a main line Mario video game), Super Mario Brothers Wonder is indeed a solid video game, but it is also, unfortunately, a video game that is sorely lacking in innovation, that is playing things super safe, and that also feels like things are being played through the motions, rather than actually giving useful things to the player, or giving any sort of decent natural challenge, and, if there ARE any challenging areas that are in Super Mario Brothers Wonder, then it is either beating an Enemy/Obstacle Trap or massive Gaps/Bottomless Pits/Lava Pits/Poison Pits. I am not saying that those things are not needed to make a Mario video game, or any action/platformer video game, challenging, but if there is nothing that is truly innovative to accompany that, then it is just either a paint-by-numbers effort or an Aldi's/Save-A-Lot version of a classic Mario video game. There is nothing wrong with being nostalgic or retro, but when it become elitist, and/or a lazy cash grab, then it is problematic, and Super Mario Brothers Wonder honestly feels like such a thing. (Also, for the record, while we are on Mario video games, Princess Peach: Showtime, and, if it ever gets remade/remastered, Super Princess Peach, could do with some Princess Daisy, Princess Rosalina, Princess Shokora/Chocolat/Chocolate, Pauline, and Toadette DLC, as it would give those video games some much needed replay value). Now, as for the other things that you had mentioned, the TMNT 2018 and TMNT 2024 cartoons/Western manga both have some interesting new characters, as well as dialogue, and ditto for the IDW TMNT comics/Western manga, but TMNT has pretty much been pandering to the SJW crowd, rather than being good of its own merits, as of late, which rightfully makes some fans mad. However, with that being said, you also had m o r o n s that were back in the day that were mad that the TMNT of Mirage Comics were being watered down, as were the Usagi Yojimbo comics (and ditto for the Netflix Batman Beyond/Batman of the Future/Phantom 2040/Zorro: Generation Z styled sequel series to Usagi Yojimbo), and Usagi Yojimbo being made in the 1987 TMNT cartoon/Western anime series (never mind that it is the franchise that holds, and still holds, the entire franchise afloat, like it or not), and the facts that its co-creators have literally abandoned the series, as well as did not lay down the law with the creator of the Ninjara series, make fans like the series less). However, without the 1987 TMNT cartoon/Western anime series, you literally HAVE no TMNT franchise, as it was THAT critical to it existing in modern society. There is a reason why Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, and the fan made video game that is called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rescue-Palooza, are so beloved by the TMNT community, and why both Konami AND Nickelodeon reissued classic TMNT video games through the also well-received Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection. Finally, as for Harriet the Spy, it is a lot less able to be screwed up, as the main plot of the franchise is simply a girl-led take on something like Encyclopedia Brown, and book based franchises that also spawned movies, and cartoons/Western anime, like Curious George or Clifford the Big Red Dog, also respected the source materials, as the people that made all of those three franchises knew better to be like Marc Brown and his Arthur franchise and its pandering to SJW types, and the two times that Arthur did so the most, it caused a LOT of backlash, including getting its live-action/animated Buster Rabbit based spinoff series cancelled, and causing a MASSIVE dip in the fan base of the cartoon/Western anime series of Arthur when a form of deviancy that is promoted by SJW types was made in one episode, which was essentially the straw that broke the camel's back for that series, and let us not forget the time that a whole episode had to be rewritten because its guest was accused of crimes in their sports career, among other controversial incidents. Now, as for the other things, bringing back an old popular franchise, or having an executive attach itself to a franchise, is always a crap shoot, or like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, because you truly never know what you are going to get, and that is something that does not bode well for a franchise, and being safe and predictable, but being solid, is also not good either in the end. However, if something is not broke, then the optimal thing is to keep what is good and to reject what is bad with actually doing those things right in a franchise. I hope that I make sense in my comments to you.

A separate thought on these Atari games. Take a look at Lunar Lander - it’s a story-wrapped game and most people who played the original didn’t know the story bits. (Thanks again for Lunar Lander - love it) Same with Yars Revenge. I think (but not sure) that the story bits and animation are similar between these two titles - what are your thoughts? I think Atari is doing something unique with these titles, but they aren’t communicating that part (at least not that I’m aware of). I don’t know how they get in front of that to set expectations but they could lean on the community to help tell that story. I think they are making unique games, not just nostalgia-farming these titles.

I'm a Mega Man X fan, and honestly, I was pretty comfortable with the gameplay, even if a bit slow (trailers makes me think collectible upgrades will change that). Mixing an action side scroller with shoot em up sections was interesting enough for me. I'm not a fan of WayForward quirky waifu character designs, but for sure they know how to make fresh but still retro-ish games ("retro" as in 1987-2000). River City Girls was amazing, and I don't even like Renegade and River City.

There seems to be a "Chick" in it. (Female protagonist when previously it was male/neutral) So - is it "Lame" and is she "GAY"!? Forgive the joke but that is the issue - not so much we care those but the wretched excess of that and really nothing else - oh we hate "Lame" and SHOULD... I think the negative backlash is the customer base from Xers to Millennials is that they are sick of product being bought, chewed up, spat out with token mass appeal and new products (competition) suppressed. So there will be huge negative reaction to any following a modern formula that is not radical, innovative, etc. In a way its also fair game as the corporations forced "No metroidvanias" for near a decade (00s) due to wanting to make everything polygon so they weren't dependent on good artists for things like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. So - do you think this will be fun and respectful and worth your $...? (as an Xer) OR - do you think it's something even kids might like "Not Yuurrrr Yarz wevenge!" - and if they had to 'fix' it and make it not appeal to Xers, why even buy the rights and use the IP even if owned? I love new video games and nostalgia - but even with today's internet it seems the market is too dominated by big companies and an agenda - notably Blackrock/Vanguard forcing "Change" where its NOT needed so we are a bit allergic to it.

Be neat to see a re-make of Sledgehammer or another Deathstalker movie for instance...? Bet that would be a real riot! So IF it appeals to you and you aren't being paid by Atari to promote it - I'll probably check it out. While I never played Yars Revenge back in the 70s-80s. My first game console was PONG, then later Coleco Adam, then Sega's Master system, but I do understand the grievous of many die hard fans who say "This isn't a real Yars game." While I do agree in keeping and open mind, the gaming industry for the last 10 years has taken a beloved franchise and butchered it by either pushing cheap cash grabs, or changed it so radically different that it's no longer recognizable. Now, most people can honestly agree that it makes financial sense for Atari to create more modern vision in hopes of increase their player base, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's going to back fire on them in a big way. Let me explain. This re-envisioning uses the title of Yars Rising but the only parts that appear to be like Yars is the graphics of some of mini-games. The rest of the game appears to be a modern side scrolling metromania which is absolutely nothing like Yars which was a space ship/insect ship fighting, rail shooter. These things have nothing in common at all, so combining in the way they have done is taking a big, big risk of alienating a well established (42 years+) and retro fans base, in hopes of attracting a younger crowd who spend most of their time playing MOBI games. A lot of companies have tried this in the best and most of them ended up alienating the former, and not attracting enough of the latter to be successful. To GenXGrownUp, while I have really enjoyed your videos, and I think you have many good points to consider, I also think you might have taken this commits a little too personally or perhaps you need try to relay better that you see both sides of this argument instead of kind of looking like your defending Atari's actions a little too strongly. No offense, but at after watching this video, you seemed to be a bit too hard on those hardcore retro/atari fans who are voicing their opinion. The Modern Gaming Industry in the last 10+ years have been turning out remakes, remasters, re-envisioning and for the most part not doing such a good job, so its not a stretch people are quick to see the negative of any new games using the name of a once beloved franchise. As a GenXer like yourself, this isn't anyone's first rodeo, today's modern Gaming Industry has earned the vinegar their getting. The new Atari too has earned a little of that with some of the things they done recently, but I digress. Needless to say I think both sides have very valid points that need to be discussed and respected.

I'm sure I'll still play yars, since wayforward does a good game--but while I was doing the earlier comment, the thought of a more beat'em up oriented take on ninja golf popped into mind and sounds really decently 'wayforward' too

Good point GenX. Ill hold judgement and Im willing to try the game. Im a fan of the original and I think it will be a good and interesting experiment while we wait for Warshaw's sequel. 👍

That's more than fair. Are you sure this sort of open-mindedness is allowed on the internet? 😉

To me, saying this isn't a Yars game is like saying Super Mario RPG or Mario Kart aren't Mario games. Franchises are allowed to have spin-offs, reboots, etc. that expand on the lore and universe. In this case, though, Yars doesn't get nearly as many games as Mario does, so I'm guessing that's why some people are upset. They wait a long time for some kind of Yars game and what they finally get goes far beyond what they expect, and I think that's rather reasonable. Plus, when you're as old as a Gen-Xer, I imagine you might have that lingering stigma about how you won't live forever and can't wait too long for the game of your dreams. I'm a millennial, and even I have that mindset sometimes.

Gen X is at that age now of being angry at change, yelling at clouds, and how kids today are blah blah blah. In all seriousness.. Remember when people wondered why Bently Bear wasn't made into Atari's mascot and placed in other games? The angry comments about this game are your answer. Let's see what the game has got going on at full release and try to remember that other/younger generations do exist.

@GenXGrownUp LOL yeah, I ment Generation X. Apparently, I missed the Gen X bus by like a year. So kinda like a Millennial-X, I guess hehe. I feel the urge to shake my fist at those fluffy white sky drifters sometimes... Just now watched the demo, and it actually looks good to me.. 🤷♂️ I even like the art style...

It looks worth a play to me. The ultra anime characters didn't not appeal to me (I have logged hundreds of hours in Disgaea games so I do like cheese) . I would love to see the ending the main character somehow being responsible for a fly getting on a cargo ship or something to tie it all in

Dude these folks are buggin. This looks cool, and they have my attention. I’m Gen X and I approve.

Gostei bastante do jogo. É uma releitura que expande o universo de um jogo clássico e o apresenta a uma nova geração preservando o legado e memória do jogo original. Espero que seja bom e faça sucesso para que mais franquias sejam resgatadas assim.

@@TroutButter Yet newer versions of _Tetris_ sales are still counted as though they’re just more copies of the original game-for game sales records-as Scott the Woz has rightfully whined about... 🍻
