@Ketirz6 жыл бұрын
I wound up looking into this because I couldn't believe how junk the back and forth situation was. Apparently the 5200 models had a joystick with a number pad on them. In this game, "Realsports Tennis" (Activision also made a Tennis game for the 2600), that number pad was used to input where on the enemy court you wanted to return the ball to. I have to assume that on a Switch version this would be mapped to the right stick, but they let you go ahead and play with just one Joy-Con anyway, which means it's just defaulting to a neutral position and giving them this stagnant ball situation. _In theory._ I don't own this so I can't test it myself, but that's what I would guess is going on.

However, realsports tennis was released as an "Atari 2600" game, meaning you wouldn't have needed to use the fancy 5200 controller. However, I do notice that the picture on the back of the box looks different to the version they are playing here.... I don't know why i'm bothering with this as I can answer my own questions... Looks like they're playing that Atari 5200 equivalent of Realsports Tennis. There's more than one button on those controllers, so they're probably not using the other possible combos to hit the ball in other directions. But if the computer even plays it down the center forever, then you gotta blame this one on the programmer. Can't believe it shipped like that too.

My family used to have one of those plug-and-play things with like 12 atari games on it, including old-school Pong. Every once in a while, the game would hit some kind of sweet spot or rhythm, to where you could put the controller down, walk away and make a snack for like 7 minutes, and come back to find that you won, having absolutely steamrolled the computer, who hadn't scored a single point since you found the spot

quoting right from the Atari tennis manual "Just as in real tennis, in Tennis by ACTIVISION you can aim and "place" the ball depending on how you hit it. The angle of your shot is controlled by where you hit the ball on your racket. If you hit the ball in the center of the racket, your shot will go straight forward. The closer you hit the ball to the edge of the racket, the sharper the angle will be in the direction your racket is facing. But you'll need to be careful. It's easy to attempt a sharply-angled shot and miss the ball entirely. There are a wide variety of angles to hit the ball. Experiment with them and you'll soon be able to precisely aim your shots and hit them out of reach of your opponent." watches 2 AI do the same move over and over. Yep, real tennis.
