This is just the last shambles of Atari Corp, making fools of themselves. It's a neat idea on paper, but it just doesn't work, there are too many devices that do the same thing and don't cost $300. They've shown no new games, just a fancy woodgrain box, and a shiny new joystick. I'm one of the biggest Atari fans out there & even I can't support it at this point, it's ridiculous, & if Atari wants to get back in the console, they need to do something better than a Raspberry PI in a woodgrain box. Like actual third party software support & a reason to want to buy it. Yeah they have a ton of old classics but they can't just re-hash them all the time. Or if Yars, Q*Bert, & Pac-Man are their Mario, Sonic & Crash Bandicoot, then make *modern* sequels to these classic games!! Do Yars Revenge 2, Bezerk 3D, bring Adventure, & the Earthworld "RPG's" into the modern era with fresh 3D graphics, & stories. *THAT* would be a reason to buy an Ataribox or VCS or whatever it's called now. Not just the same 40yr old games you can play anywhere that haven't changed at all. If they are just going to do that then just make a new better Atari Flashback, but don't try to fool people into thinking this is something people need & are getting a good value for their $300. They need to just scrap the current concept, and truly make a *NEW* console, but this...just doesn't make sense. Sorry, Atari.

Not defending the right handed controller but this would be a simple software fix. Turn the controller a quarter turn, clockwise and it's a lefty. This could be accomplished with a simple software remap of the switches.

Now if they were clever, the iconic one-button joystick could have been made configurable so that you could rotate the joystick 90 degrees and play it as a lefty. Very simple software to add either on the driver or by the firmware of the controller. They'd just have to make sure if it is wired to put two ports so the cord wouldn't get in the way (or make it wireless-only). The Atari Lynx had a similar feature that allowed you to rotate the handheld to accommodate lefties.

Recreating the original Atari controller is a stupid idea. There's a damn good reason why there were so many aftermarket controllers available. I got three aftermarket controllers back in the day and never touched the originals again.

If you went to AMD and said provide me with a system that would retail for about $250 and it didn't need an optical drive and it didn't need to license an OS and it didn't need to license ISA ports or AGP ports, etc. It would be a pretty powerful machine, more powerful than an Xbox One S and More powerful than a PS4. And if you then went to developers and said hey here is a easy port from the AMD derived Xbox ONE and PS4 and guess what, no used game market. You would make a compelling case. The best selling Xbox 360 game was Kinect adventure at 10 million because it was a pack in. With 80 million consoles sold you would think that Halo 3 could haven't beaten that number but is didn't because of the used game market. Atari could actually have a winner on it's hand. People keep thinking that is is going to be an under powered machine but for $250 and no need for an optical drive and no need for support components needed for a PC. This system should be pretty powerful, remember and Xbox One or a PS4 is 5 years old. That is if they don't screw it up. If they were smart they would realize that you could come out with a much more powerful console than an Xbox One or PS4 at the same cost or less, and because you have eliminated the used market you don't need as much market share as Xbox or Sony to be a blinding success.

Just before we completely write off these boxes... I think, IF you had the right group of fresh new developers that were dedicating some new ips to the atari vcs, the marketing was right, and theres a system in place to recruit newer "elite indie development teams" then it could work, but basically im asking for all the planets to align and without a problem. Trouble is this atari box has been slapped with the "its gonna fail" stick before its even got a working controller. And that's all their fault, they really should've kept things quiet, especially with a big name like atari, or at least ran with a code name at first lol.

I think Atari wants to sales games as Steam using the Steam Machine but having their own standard machine, and use its games to get people initially and add any games they can make run well on their machine like Linux Native games and even Windows games using Wine. Not all Linux nor all Windows games, just the games they can make run fine. Atari will get the money as Steam, by selling games, not need to have exclusive games, again like Steam. And Even if the Atari can't get it working as a digital distribution shop, at least the buyers get a cheap Linux box to install Steam.

Does anyone think that there doing it this way to throw people off, that only Atari knows what's going on and there partners. Do you think they want Xbox Ps and Nintendo to know what this about, if they knew what this was and it crushed these game companies don't you think they'd rush to blow this system out of the water before it even comes out. This in my option is good marketing, don't let the public know anything don't show them anything the internet is full of rumors and sometimes the internet spoils things. Don't let anyone know anything about your product so no one can copy it or try to out market you. I'm still behind this 100%, I think people will be shocked when it's released.
