I would like to give it a try. Because even though I was born 90's, in 2013 I was checking out LA Comic Con/Comikaze Expo for 1st time and they had video games on display, retro stuff. I gave an Atari 2600 for the 1st time and it was awesome. Hope to get one someday. Plus I hope to get the Retron 77 instead.

I was 10 when Collecovision came out. Read about in electronic gaming monthly right before its release. The mistake they made was not releasing the Super game expansion mod. We all waited and then they threw their money behind the Addam. When your parents come to you and ask "do you want this" and you say "No" you've lost the market. Even though Colleco games were older tech and spacy mostly compared to Nintendos stuff,who knows.

Atari Box might be cool. It looks like it will be a powered up Ouya style console. Current Atari publishes some GOOD modern games like Roller Coaster Tycoon 4, Centipede Origins, Test Drive: Ferrari racing, Baldur's Gate 2: Enchanced edition, etc. Granted, Alone in the Dark: illumination SUCKED (next Alone in Dark game needs a NEW developer). Regardless, CURRENT Atari is a professional company that has been publishing mostly good games.

I agree with you guys. The Ataribox is probably just marketing BS slapped on a cheap android box with some 2600 emulator. It really annoys me that the internet is reacting to this like it is the 2nd coming of the true Atari when that company is 30+ years dead. And I have to ask, is there really that many people who are interested in the Atari name? They have nowhere near the nostalgia credit of Nintendo or Sega. Just like when the Retro VGS rented the Coleco name; who cares about a dead company that had one mildly successful console 35 years ago?

As a big Atari fan and living through the era before the NES, I am not really excited about this "Atari Box" and I am supposed to be the target demo for this. I agree the flashback gold has more appeal and I may consider picking that up after the first price drop.

Marco Franciosi It's great to hope for something, but do you really want to spend lot of money on something from a company like modern Atari? The reality is that only multibillion dollar massive companies will be able to compete with MS, Sony and Nin. It just costs too much money to design, build, market a serious game console. Then there is the issue of being able to convince devs and publishers to actually make games for that console. For any new console to succeed, it needs to have exclusives that can sell the system. Nintendo, Sony and MS own devs that can make then or can pay a 3rd party dev to make a game exclusive. What does Atari have that people would buy a console for hundreds of dollars?

It would be nice if we could get excited about things like this but with the history of similar announced consoles you just got to question everything and be skeptical. Would love to see a new Atari console that could compete with the big 3 but it's just never going to happen. If this Atari console came with a cartridge slot i would be slightly more interested in it than i am now because i do not own any of the old Atari consoles and if they found a way to play multiple Atari consoles carts with this system that would be cool and something i would not mind potentially buying if they could keep the price down.

Forget the Raspberry Pi, now they released the Latte Panda and it's fucking sweet. It runs emulation station and comes with about 32 gigs of Flash mem built in. It is a bit pricey, but you can find it on amazon.

My favorite way to play classic Atari games in HD: the Analogue NT mini via Kevtris' jailbroken firmware. Can't wait for him to release the cartridge adapters.

I was a kid right at this time period during the 80s. Those of us who gamed had a 2600 or perhaps something similar like an Intellivision or Colecovision or whatever. And we played those and loved them because... that was all we had. You can believe that every kid dropped them like a hot turd as soon as they could get their hands on the NES and play "real" games that had more gameplay than what were essentially repetitive tests of hand eye coordination. I'm a lifelong gamer to this day, but can almost never go back for a few minutes to those early games.

One of those things I noticed over the last 15 years that lots of people overlook is how "Atarigrames" has tried to constantly revive those old IPs in modern form for whatever the current consoles are at the time. The problem is the disconnect between the actual age of those IPs and younger audiences, the usually generic names of those games that make them easy to miss on a shelf, and not being something they could release on an Atari-branded console because one didn't exist post-millennium. There's a SLIM potential here, if anyone at this Atari has a brain cell to spare, to somewhat bolster and repair the strength of those classic IPs if they can find talented indie studios to work with who could develop some well-made and fun new installments of them exclusive for the Ataribox. Provided exclusivity is at all a priority for them, of course. It should be, frankly. Really almost every game will have to be simple indie games because I just don't see this machine having the horsepower of really even something like the Nintendo Switch. This is going to be some kind of cost reduced Android OS machine or Raspberry Pi that only runs digital 2D and some light 3D games, probably with minimal internal storage and an SD Card slot to hold more. And if all it sees are ports of indie games from Steam, it's really no different than an Nvidia Shield or Steam console. The classic 2600 library is nice but it's not gonna cut it as an incentive. Maybe if they can also include some proper arcade, 5200, 7800, Lynx, and Jaguar games that are those forgotten gems almost no one played, that would be really nice at least and definitely pique my interest a little.

I believe the best option is running Atari on the jail broken Analogue NT mini using hardware emulation, not software emulation like the Pi. You'll soon be able to run the actual cartridges as soon as Kevtris manufactures the adapters he started on.

But the NES FPGA hardware should NOT be able to run the ATARI code, its optomised for NES, now if they want to create a FPGA for ATARI then that will work, FPGA is very specific its not like a SOC, that's not how it works, FPGA consoles are made ONLY for the system they are targeting.

Tempest for the 2600 was an unreleased Atari Inc prototype. It's been on the Flashbacks since at least FB4. It is okay, given the system's abilities, but there is only one level design.

The first Flashback was shaped like the 7800 and was a NES-on-a-chip. The emulation was reportedly bad (I never tried it myself). With the FB2 they had the time and recreated the 2600's hardware, making it possible to attach a cartridge slot. Since then (Flashback 3 onward) AtGames handled the systems, with the only issues being how games are labeled (Swordquest Earthworld on the back of the box versus Earthworld on the system's menu, for example), misrepresenting the version included (BW arcade Space Invaders instead of 2600 version), and incorrect box art. (Front Line is a Coleco title, but they erroneously use the Zellers Frontline art. The Zellers game was a pirated Combat sold in Canada, using artwork from Xevious game ads.) Despite these issues the Flashback Ataris are worth it.

Honestly, if this thing is just an Ouya/Android box, but with the ability to buy games on cards instead of being pure download, I will 100% support whatever the shit this thing is. Coleco Chameleon BS aside, I still loved the hell out of its basic concept. Tempest was on some of the older models of the Flashback besides this one, even came with a poster for it with one of the bundles.

My nephews are 3 and 4. When they were in town the other month they had this little handheld atari thing that they were playing. My brother bought it for them being nostalgic. I think that is the only demographic for these games. My brother is about 4 years older than me. I was a Nintendo kid so I played the thing maybe 5 minutes and gave it back to the kids. That being said don't they already have a number of these flashback consoles for atari?

YES, but none of them are made by ATARI, a Chinese company makes the ATGames ATARI Flashback consoles, they are not bad, not perfect either but not bad, if you have a xbox, PS4 or PC you can just buy the ATARI collection. it has better emulation, but If you want something portable or small console the just get the ATGames consoles, they are up to 7th gen now, I bought an earlier one from a thrift store for $5, but they are like $40 new.

Beamrider is on the 8 Gold Activision version, don't remember if it's on the regular 8 Gold. Pitfall 2 forget it, they are not going to put the effort in to get that to run as it requires work to get the custom music chip emulated so it can run

I don't think this is going to be like the Ouya. For 2 reasons. Back in the June Fred Chesnais mentioned it is based on Pc hardware. Meaning that it couldn't be like the rest of the android boxes since they all use mobile hardware. Secondly Atari partnered with another company called Sigfox. I think this is going to be a legit console that isn't made to compete with the big 3. Its going have around the same power as last gen systems.

I'm getting sick of the Flashbacks only including 2600 games. Getting more 3rd party titles on the newest one is a step in the right direction but it would be great if they could throw us at least a couple of 5200 and 7800 games. They could even fix the problem of the crapy 5200 controllers if they included some updated ones. I'll hold off on getting any new Flashbacks until the Retron 77 officially comes out. P.S. Enduro was an Activision title and I still play it every once in a while :p

It wasn't the Ataribox concept itself that bothered me. Hell, the Atari brand name still rings nostalgia bells and has at least moderate value. Wanna make an Atari-branded OUYA? Go for it. Best of luck. My issue is that Atari conveniently decided to leave out the crowdfunding aspect until after the press articles had already run, and many of those articles were never updated to reflect this pretty significant detail. It wasn't a mistake. And it really doesn't matter that Atari reps didn't wait longer to make it known. It was still a textbook case of purposeful misdirection. And, yeah: It's weird that people are blindly buying into this thing so strongly with such little detail and despite the fact that Atari apparently cannot afford to put this thing into production without help, all because of the name and "Oh! Atari is classic!" Enthusiasm is fine, but understand that criticism and skepticism are gonna come with the territory.
