For clarification, on ATC recordings, the pilot communicating with the tower is most times the one not flying. In this case, the Captain was directing her First Officer while they were going through a windshear. After the plane has been stabilized again, she compliments him on his 'excellent flying' and also mentions 'this was really a wind shear' so I take it the First Officer had never experienced one before. I only saw a news item on tv many years ago so my guess is a 'wind shear' is like someone opening a trapdoor right underneath you, you lose altitude for seemingly no reason, unless you know what it is and what to do (training, experience). A Dutch airliner from Martin Air crashed in December 1992 due to a windshear, 56 passengers were killed, 106 seriously injured.

Add speed, dont change configuration.. first instinct is to retract flaps to 15, then gear; however, you maintain that full config till you climb out of it. If not, you'll sink like a stone in the sea.

Wow that was worse than I thought. Do you think they were close to crash when the pilot screamed speed, speed, speed, speed? I know windshear only from simulator and it causes real troubles they called it "silent assassin" and it caused many crashes about 20-30 years ago when airports didnt have the dopler's radar.
@AviationPro9 жыл бұрын
Izmael1310 Yes indeed! I don't know, maybe the speed was getting too low without the pilot flying noticing. I'm sure it's pretty difficult to maintain speed, altitude and heading under those circumstances.
@Izmael13109 жыл бұрын
AviationPro Yeah dont know the real pilots procedures but when is the weather so bad with big chance of windshear I'am landing with higher speed in simulator. Do you know what the KLM 958 meant by the early right turn? I checked replay on FR24.com and they were behind the Transavia number 2 for landing. And when the Transavia started the right turn after go arround they could land so I did not understand this message - what do you think? And as the pilot said that they flew for 20 feet I think they were pushed outside the runway or they were pushed up by the windshear. That is my guess :)
@AviationPro9 жыл бұрын
Izmael1310 Yes, actually they landed without using any flaps. I'm not sure whether that was their intention or whether there was a problem with the flaps. I made a mistake in the subtitling, he was mentioning: "in the case of a go-around we have to make an early right turn", so just to advice the air traffic controller ;)

@AviationPro9 жыл бұрын
Ron Real That's right, I don't know the exact reason. Could be to have more control over the aircraft or to save more fuel.
@janprikryl57927 жыл бұрын
The main reason for no flaps landing was that they over-sped the flaps at the first attempt to land at AMS and could not use them anymore; it seems that using thrust reversal was optional (light aircraft, long - but wet - runway; early thrust reversal in gusting crosswind conditions could cause directional instability) and they might have use it later at lower speed (that part is not present in the landing video). See e.g. AVherald discussion...
@AudieHolland7 ай бұрын
You don't really need reverse thrust when landing at Schiphol.

They wanted to divert to EHEH, but were told off by the military control there unless they would declare an emergency, because EHEH has rather strict noise limits. They could've possibly diverted to EDLV in the vicinity of Nijmegen/Venlo where the wind was practically calm that day, but that probably didn't cross their mind.

Due to that storm I had trouble leaving Turkey with Transavia. We were all scheduled when we arrived at the airport (Antalya). The closer we got to our initial depart time, the more delay we got. I think we were supposed to leave around 10pm local time. But at 3am we were still waiting. We were already at the gate, though, and we could see our plane had arrived. But after a while it was pushed back and taxied away. Then we were informed that we would have to spend the night on the floor in a conference room of a hotel right outside of the airport. So that's what we did. Also, the next day we only departed in the evening, which means we had to spend the whole day in a hotel without a room. Transavia paid for (some of) our food and drinks at the hotel, and we got free drinks on the plane. Yay. Apart from that, no refund or whatsoever... I do remember that the people on the plane of this video, almost sued transavia for the delay and hard landing. So yeah... 'People'

Heavy windshear (loss of the speed) followed by entering in the thunderstorm cloud (aircraft out of control during the go around+ pilot anxiety and he wants to go out the shower). The date of the incident was 25th of july and in western Europe (Amsterdam) this kind of weather occurs only when a storm front coming from the west (ocean, north sea) is passing over. Their weather radar should be red an purple in every quadrant and normally they should wait to start the approach, because if you have been diverted from Rotterdam and you have made a go around at the alternate airport, you should have normally 30 minutes of holding fuel (IFR regulation)in your tanks (if you don't use it during the flight). If they are running out of fuel at that time, there is a problem with the fuel computation and/or with fuel consuption during the flight (adverse wind, ...). For me there was something wrong with that flight and they have been very lucky.

People talking about how this lady isn't capable to fly an aircraft in such conditions, who even said she was pilot flying?, I wouldn't expect that the Pilot flying would take control of the radios whilst performing a wind shear escape maneuver. I'd have thought Pilot monitoring would take control of radios and back up pilot flying?
@mikkykyluc58046 жыл бұрын
From what I could hear, her first officer was flying there; hence why she called out "speed speed speed" to the other pilot. A little later she complimented the other pilot in Dutch, and took over because they were getting low on fuel and really needed to get it on the ground. (I could hear this because she accidentally spoke to her first officer on the approach frequency) And yeah the next attempt she flew herself and landed it, in windshear with gusts up to 50 knots, which is incredible!

Interessting case as the "black box" for this "event" was... the finger of the pilot stucked on the PTT switch ! LOL I thing they handled great as they came back safely. BUT: Don't you thing that questionning if A/P would handle or not is a bit weird ? I mean: It's obvious ! MANUAL FLYING is a way better efficient in these conditions ! Why the hell this "statement": "I don't think A/P can handle this" ??? Seems to be a good job after all...
@AviationPro7 жыл бұрын
Well, it's hard to provide an exact translation, but due to the wind conditions and wind shear she said to the first officer that the autopilot would not be able to keep control of the aircraft. Autopilots are not designed to work perfectly in such weather conditions (at least in the Boeings) and might even disconnect when it is too severe to handle, so I guess she just said it as a precaution to the first officer who was flying.

Wow... This is why I don't like being a passenger on civilian aircraft. Their training has to be as cost effective as possible, and all they do is punch buttons and use the autopilot. So when it comes to actually flying an aircraft, they lack the skills. Also, this pilot in command you hear on the radio totally lost her composure. She was way too stressed out. She shouldn't be sitting in a cockpit of an aircraft carrying passengers, but that's just me. Kudo's for the guy on the tower. He realizes she's in trouble and helps her calmly and professionally. The final landing looked really good, considering the conditions and having a source of chaos sitting in the seat next to you lol. By the way, in gusty conditions, it's not uncommon to do a flapless landing. It allows for a higher speed on landing, which provides more stability.
@AviationPro9 жыл бұрын
Robert1983USA You really think they were just pushing buttons during this incident and that they are not trained to fly manually? These were actual pilots flying the aircraft manually through a wind shear. If they lacked the skills, they would have crashed. Why don't you go up in the cockpit and fly the airplane, see if you are so relaxed knowing you are low on fuel and knowing you have take care of the 170 lives behind you. In my opinion she communicated in a calm, but very direct way. If shey would have stressed out, she would have been talking nonsense.
@XOROHN9 жыл бұрын
Robert1983USA omg...i wanna see how you react in this situation , when you have only one attempt cause you don't have that much fuel anymore to do more then one attempt!....watch the video were the planes lands...an there you see they did thair job perfectly!....it's better to be a bit nervous than too cool and ramming the plane into earth!
@Robert1983USA9 жыл бұрын
AviationPro It starts with reading... Ofcourse they're trained to fly manually. But they hardly have actually have to fly an aircraft. Company regulations state exactly when they can, and when it's prohibited. An autopilot flies way more fuel efficient than a human. So an airliner pilot doesn't really fly a lot. It's mostly just punching buttons and let the autopilot fly a flightplan. If they had skills, they hadn't made the news with this emberassing show of poor skills. And I don't know what you consider calm communication.... But lol... She has no idea what she's doing anymore. She's basically panicking. You can hear it in her voice, instead of using English she switched to Dutch, and even though after being corrected by tower, she kept on transmitting on the tower frequency, bringing other air traffic in danger. She has no idea what she's doing, because she can't cope with the stress. Any pilot worth his money would agree with me on this. These are moments when pilots start earning their money. But this one isn't cut out for it.
@Robert1983USA9 жыл бұрын
Robert Kroeber I don't know the details, but the fact that they were low on fuel maybe has to do with the decision making progress that went before. And also her communication with tower could be better. She's not being clear. If she's low on fuel, she just go ahead and declare an emergency, instead of confusing herself and everyone else on the radio. It's ok to be nervous, but when shit hits the fan, a pilot should become absolutely calm and unfuck the situation. She did a very poor job at that. I'm just saying, all the positive remarks here are surprising, because it's something pretty emberassingly bad that happened here. And hey, people can have a rough day and make fuckups, ofcourse. But it's weird they get praised for it.
@Robert1983USA9 жыл бұрын
By the way, don't forget all the other aircraft that had to do go-arounds that day. Or the aircraft that made the decision of diverting to an airfield further away from the storm. Like Brussels or Dusseldorf. No, this one decided to go from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, hold there for like 45 minutes, and then almost run out of fuel (???) and not declare an emergency? But instead clutter the tower frequency with panicky stressed out transmissions. This should have been a normal landing, but to me it seems that loss of composure and less-than-ideal decisions made this a bad situation for the aircraft and it's passengers. Shit like that happens. Let's hope people learn from this.
