I happen to be that very busy controller working MIA south departures and TMB arrivals. It's great seeing this from the other side. Like a lot of the comments stated and they're correct, this is a very busy position full of tons of VFR traffic. In this particular situation and it happens occasionally, after I cleared you for the ILS 9R approach a VFR not in communications with ATC turned in front of you guys and intercepted the localizer. It's often times very difficult vectoring jet traffic into TMB alongside VFRs(training), not talking to anyone, and you have no idea what their next move will be. As far as the sloppy controlling comment, the approach clearance was cancelled and you can't "pre-plan" for a VFR turning in front of jet traffic. In that situation, our first priority is keep the pilot safe and the aircraft separated. I really enjoyed the video!

Cap, you and Mike define "Pro". The second Mike had trouble locating the Cessna, he put lights on and conducted the search. You guys are my fav team....

I heard you say 2 small aircraft went down in Texas it made me think close to 15 years ago I just missed seeing to hit each other were I was working at. They used to be a small airport about 10 mile north of LUK. One had wing over and the other one wing under and One was climbing and the other landing and they must have not seen each other. And watching you looking for that plane brought it back.

The XLS does not like to be in the "weeds." You guys did a great job negotiating the busy airspace. 360s do not save fuel but provide safety spacing. Not that it is normal procedure, 360 on a cleared ILS, it was entertaining and kept you sharp.

Flying in FL, from my limited experience, is sort of like the Wild West (due to all the traffic) at times. Imagine if FL had mountains and terrain like Aspen... Thankfully its mostly flat at at sea level. That 360 turn on the LOC was an interesting twist and nicely done.
@seagullsbtn6 жыл бұрын
Thats one serious busy ATC
@captmoonbeam6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Don. That's an interesting twist to throw in mountains. I think with that scenario a lot of the Florida flight schools would move and the traffic would be reduced.

Fascinating Jim - tends to help illustrate, there's not that much room for pilots to go to sleep, even if on auto! I reckon, bit like driving, ''expect the unexpected'' is always a good way to operate! Guess the 360 added a bit to the gas burn. NICE landing. :)

I have never heard ATC request a landing aircraft to do a 360 and reestablish the localizer but what do I know. The only thing I know for sure is I will not be applying for that controller 's job! He has a full plate but did an excellent job ! I don't believe that would be an airport to land for a novice pilot!
@CTBtoday6 жыл бұрын
James Wikstrom happens all the time here in Florida. I have had to do it two or three times on the same approach.
@willyt72416 жыл бұрын
James Wikstrom actually the controller did a poor job. A 360 on final is the result of poor planning and judgement. A 360 degree turn to rejoin in no way ensure acft track when rejoining is 30 degrees or less of the final as required.

Great video, Miami area is really busy! So, let me ask you a question. You called the glideslope alive, at which point did you transition from the gauges to visual? I mean, the runway was visible for miles away, but I'm curious, given your training and how you fly, when you started looking outside?

@captmoonbeam6 жыл бұрын
they were very busy. We had targets all over our TCAS
@willyt72416 жыл бұрын
ATC service was poor, 360 on final results from poor initial judgement of overtake of preceeding traffic. Also, controller ripped you off the approach without officially cancelling your approach clearance and issuing an altitude to maintain! Very sloppy on the controllers part. Pilot remained professional.

*"These ATC videos are an excellent way for student pilots to familiarize themselves with the terminology that pilots and the air traffic controllers use while communicating during the flight."* True, but be careful about setting a bad example. Stop saying "point" in altitudes ("seven point five" is not correct phraseology), don't say "to" in headings or altitudes, and please, please, please eliminate "...with you..." in all cases.
