comparing how jongho used to dance in kq fellaz and the first couple years before his big leg injury to now is wild. he definitely used to have more groove and use more of his whole body but i feel like he mightve been pigeon holed into the main vocalist role so much that he legitimately can’t dance full out because (as he said in the first halazia comeback) he used a headset mic to be able to dance more and almost passed out. 💀 he sings like practically half of the whole song and his notes are so high and the pressure to sing well live every performance must be so heavy.

My thoughts exactly. Glad to see someone with the same opinion about Jongho's dancing. Edited: I still miss his dancing during KQ fellaz time to time, but I've embraced the current Jongho's style of dancing.

this makes me remember someone saying that since the gap in dancing ability between each of the members is so small they may not be individually the best when ranked with other male idols but are strongest/most comparable as a team and I really think it’s true.I do notice the differences in dancing style but they somehow manage to be in sync just enough so the choreo looks harmonious.It doesn’t work for each K-pop group but for performance-centred ateez in particular it does
@facts_in_fiction
@facts_in_fiction Жыл бұрын
I agree! Another thing to consider are their choreographies, they tend to be more footwork heavy than most kpop (and generally stage-) choreo, which makes it more difficult to look synchronised. That's also the reason you rarely see house and other fast, footwork focused styles on stage.

All ateez members said that jongho always holds back when dancing. I am glad you noticed that. You need to have a certain amount of skill to actually hold back and still look ok. When jongho goes all out he is pretty dann good.

Holy damn. Wonyoung and Mingi sharing 1st place for body control and isolation is just chefs kiss. They both truly deserved that 1st place, with the injuries they both have and STILL placing 1st for body control. I’ve never seen someone ranked ATEEZ more fairly than you, this truly shows how and why Yunho, Mingi and Wooyoung are called main dancers. They are incredible, truly amazing dancers those 3.

I'm commenting because I agree lol, Mingi's dancing is seriously underappreciated and I realized his supremacy in that move in The Real, which I'm glad you added in the end 10:25. Also about Hongjoong's stage presence and connection to the audience, plus pure enjoyment of performing I'd add. His fancam again from The Real on some awards is my antidepressant! I really enjoyed this video, thank you! Kept chuckling at See-onghwa 😁

I don't think mingi's dancing is under appreciated, anyone who knows knows. In the first place, mingi is also part of performer group since the beginning (predebut show: code name ateez, he's in the team to make new choreo). It's just his rapping takes significant chunks of parts in a song/stage, so he needs to concede dancing highlight to the others to be balanced, hence is often positioned in the back.

LOVED the diagramming you did with Yunho under "Angles" -> super helpful to see that especially in comparison to his members. Re: efficiency, I've also noticed how much control he has over the energy he puts into different parts of the choreo-definitely done so with intention Also adore that you put in the clip of Mingi (Minjee? lol) from the Two Step short!! He is such a pleasure to watch there and I feel like there's a bit of a mismatch between typical Ateez choreo and what he REALLY could shine in Efficiency: Jongho can REALLY dance with some swagger (esp in their KQ Fellaz pre-debut parking lot dance videos) and Ateez know it but yeah respect him for prioritizing the singing-it's just good judgment Control/isolations: Sannie and his details! One of my fav examples of this is from the intro to the Black Cat Nero music video (around 0:40), where Jongho sings, bows, and then everyone else rises up. Well actually no-everyone but San basically just stands up like a normal human, and San RISES up with hunched shoulders, zombie arms, and bowed head like an undead creature out of the grave. Love the commitment to the character. Also not sure if you're familiar with itorook!'s channel, but I really enjoy their analysis of how idol's backgrounds (i.e former swimmer, taekwondo athlete, etc) and the flexibility, muscle groups, and techniques developed there factor in to their present-day dance styles
@facts_in_fiction
@facts_in_fiction Жыл бұрын
I totally agree about Mingi (rip the pronunciation lol), most kpop choreos unfortunately don't allow this type of skillset to shine. While it's the most valued for most street/freestyle dancers. And yeah I know that channel, I've seen some videos (about skz and le sserafim) and I really like the approach!

Thank you. I just came across your channel. I don’t know anything about the technicalities of dance-I just know what pleases me. I often find depending on the song style or choreography I prefer one member’s dance to others-probably because of their strengths. Jongho doesn’t get much attention as a dancer but he often impresses me-especially how well he steps in and out of the choreography-it’s not a dance skill exactly but I knowvI couldn’t step back into a dance like tgat.

3:55 this looks so painful... maybe it's just a personal thing, I have very loose ligaments (sry I'm not a native english speaker, idk if this is the right word), and I often twist my ankles bcs of that, it's not really twisting but excactly that thing Wooyoung does with his feet right there, and if that happens a few times in a row, it really hurts. I have very unstable feet so this happens to me often, especially when I'm running on uneven ground. I was unable to dance for over a month bcs of overworked ankles and the twisting played a role in it. I couldn't even walk without pain for a while, so I hope nothing like that happend to Woo when he was dancing Inception. He's such an amazing dancer, and I really love his style, he is one of my favourite dancers in whole Kpop. And Mingi is hella overlooked, people just ignore his amazing style. Mingi, Wooyoung and Yunho kinda remind me of J-Hope, Jimin and Jungkook, yk, Mingi and J-Hope both have this streetdance hip-hop style, Wooyoung and Jimin both have this fluid style (and both are probably my personal fav dancers from their representative group 😄) and Yunho and Jungkook both have a really clean and controlled way of dancing, which focusses more on technice than on personal style. Anyway I really like this video, I already watched it like 3 times, I always come back here bcs it's so interesting and well made and explained!

another facts in fiction video just as i was looking for something to watch.. i was so happy to see this (and early too, lol) some thoughts i had while watching (they vary.. kind of greatly jaja) 1. i realized it may be time for me to actually look into stuff fully defining some of the dance terms you mention here like angles and lines. Basing my understandings of them from the context of videos i've watched is something i definitely want to cut before i gets too bad lol 2. the diagrams you provided with yunho's dancing to show the angles he keeps really were useful, i also appreciate when you point out where to look specifically. it helps my (very) untrained eye get a better picture of what you're talking about, i think it's something definitely worth keeping up 3. in the flow section you did a good job with pointing out mingi too--i don't really know ateez but pointing him out helped. :) the same applies to yeosang in the groove section; if i were to recommend anything, making the arrow more saturated or have a black/white border would accentuate visibility; i had a bit of trouble seeing it on the stage clip you provided on the video as a whole though, you've provided a really insightful analysis about the technical aspects of dance once again! really appreciate the time you take into making these and sharing the information. i think the style you use of going by different categories you look at is really good too in setting base things for a viewer to consider, whether they have dance experience or not. thanks for the great upload! quick edit based on the question in your pinned too, realized i forgot to answer it here lol: i personally prefer the tts, just feels better in terms of portraying the information to me. the music can get distracting when im trying to look at the dancer & read what you wrote
@facts_in_fiction
@facts_in_fiction Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughts and feedback! It's also important that different dancers, especially from different backgrounds don't always use terms in the exact same way, which can be confusing. And what can be considered good lines in this style wouldn't work for contemporary and so on. It still feels a bit choppy at some parts of the video with the tts, but I'll probably figure it out in the future lol

I really enjoyed your video (as always)! This ranking system felt quite different and I like how you ranked each of the members seperately in these sections. Now, I'm curious about how you define "body control" since I'm somewhat confused hah Furthermore, how strong do you think are each of the members individually as dancers in the kpop scene? Love your work and a late happy new year!
@facts_in_fiction
@facts_in_fiction Жыл бұрын
Happy new year! Body control is a term that some of my teachers used to describe the level of clarity and control that dancers should strive for. To not lose control over arms while doing footwork, to use the correct muscle groups and to get all the details right etc. I think that they're usually accurately rated in the sense that they're all on the typical lead/main dancer level while not having anyone that is among the very top technically, they're more focused on stylistic choices and performance. I guess that's why it makes sense to make this sort of ranking for them imo, most groups would have the same one or two members in all of these categories while there is really a variety here

I hope you do something like this for Dreamcatcher someday! They have worked with the same choreographer continuously for many years and their choreo has an emphasis on power and synchronization since their music is rock and metal-influenced, but we’ve been able to see them do fun things like Maroon 5 covers pre-debut (and pre-Minx) and some members have improved dramatically, while SuA is still the undeniable standout since she’s also the most versatile.

Angles are mostly the correct angles in the choreo (like arms in 45° or 90°) while lines is the overall shape and extentions, they can be curved, should be harmonious when looking at it from any perspective. There are different "rules" depending on the style. In the video I linked in the beginning I'm explaining it a bit more, maybe that could help 😅
