She is adopted. I asked someone who had already played the Japanese version. There are no physical romantic happenings in atelier games. That's a no-no for them since the beginning of time. I mean, Escha and Logy never got to kiss because rules. I wish Gust would tackle more serious themes and allow for darker plots and characters with not always the best of intentions. The closest they got to that was Keith and he was awesome.

Element synthesis is back! Yeeeeeeaaaah! I hope store prices will drop as quickly as for the previous entry. I just have two questions: One - How does the time limit work? Is it exactly like in Totori? I'm more of a fan of clear, shorter time frames. Two - How do ultimate attacks work in this game? Are they the (good) Shallie type or the (hard to trigger) Lydie/Suelle type?

I feel so saddened I can't quite share your enthusiasm. I had some concerns about this game, and saw this video pop up, making me wonder if my concerns were shared, and apparently not. Which is fine of course, and there's certainly a lot I agree with, like how it looks lovely, how it doesn't relies on its Arland setting as pure nostalgia bait, or how the pacing is like that of Atelier Totori's. But well, I like my time limits a bit too much it feels, and their removal for a more main objective-centric situation does lead to some parts that I kinda diliked. Like, the Puni Rangers part on chapter 2. While the scenario itself is charming, the feeling of having to go back and forth from Arls to the checkpoint, back to Arls, back to the checkpoint then a bit further, back to Arls, back to this castle, and back again, and then back to the checkpoint and through was just something that felt kinda like padding. And there's always a bit of padding, but in time-limited games it's generally player-made, going leisurly through alchemical recipes, and feeling like you're resting at your pace rather than losing over a month's worth of travel time just because you need to stare at Keina's flowing golden hair (not that this is a bad thing in itself) Ultimately, I still return to it daily, but there's this lasting feeling that it's Sophie cosplaying as Rorona.

8:10 Probably me being extremely nitpicky but actually if you close enough at familar area (or character model during cutscene closeup shots) you can tell that they reused a lot of assets from the original Arland games due to the almost-PS2-like blurry low-res texture quality. The Arland republic being the worst case scenario as you can see as you are near to the walls, you can tell which is reused and which is new, which can be very off-putting despite being understandable. Despite that, I really loved the game and Lulua became my second favorite character in the series (first one is Sophie despite not yet playing her own game). One of elements of the story that I like is how they show how being a family is more than being blood-related. This is probably because most of stories I watched or read about adopted characters are often painting being adopted as a very negative thing, so seeing something that doesn't take this route is a breath of fresh air.

(Edited for easier reading) Think of it like persona. There is a month/day displayed in the top left portion of the screen and every action causes time to pass. As you play the game, you'll get requests that will require you to complete them by a specific day. If you don't, the game ends. (You'll usually get a bad ending rather than get a game over). For instance in Atelier Rorona (Arland 1), you re tasked with doing certain jobs requested by the kingdom of arland to keep your Atelier open. Not fulfilling the requests given to you results in your Atelier being closed down by the government. (Bad ending). the tasks are given to you very 3 months. The game lasts 3 years. In Atelier Totori (Arland 2) you decide to join an adventurers guild to find the whereabouts of your missing mother. Once you join the guild you are tasked with meeting certain adventurer rank requirements every year. Failure to meet these requirements results in you getting kicked out of the guild. (Bad ending). This part of the game lasts 5 years. If you meet all the requirements for these 5 years the game extends by 2 years with 2 more rank goals to meet at the end of each year. Total gam4 length is 7 years. In Atelier Meruru (Arland 3) you have to expand your kingdom from Rural backwater to bustling metropolis. You have 3 years initially with yearly goals set that you have to meet. Failure results in a bad ending. Success results In A 2 year extension with 2 more goals to meet. Now take all of that and add in sub quests that have their own deadlines that you need to meet on top of the main time requirements. Not to mention special character events that happen on specific days and that's, essentially, how the Arland trilogy treats its time management. The game that came after this. Atelier Ayesha (Dusk 1) gives you 1 goal, Find your missing sister, and 3 years to do it. I forget how Atelier Escha&Logy (Dusk 2) worked Atelier Shallie (Dusk 3) didn't have a time management system. Played more like the Atelier iris and Mana Khemia games. Atelier Sophie (mysterious 1) had a calendar, but it functioned like the calendar in FF Tactics by keeping g track of days. No real deadlines. Atelier Firis (Mysterious 2) gave you 1 year to become a licensed alchemists. Once you do the time limit is removed and the calendar functions like it does in Sophie. Atelier Lydie&Suelle (Mysterious 3) starts off without a time limit, but I hear it gives you one later the farther in the story you get. (I don't know for sure since I haven't finished this one) Hope this verbal explosion helps.

I have been keeping the Atelier series on the shelf for several years now, I'm told by series aficionados that recent entries in the series are not that great and I'm better off playing Ayesha as my first game, the only problem with that is that my PS3 died years ago and I don't have a PS Vita, so.... yeah, would love to have your opinion on that.

Got my copy yesterday, and I'm looking forward to play the game some time later, hopefully early next week after I'm done with Meruru DX. At first glance, the world system it looks like a merge of Sophie and Shallie (event-limit rather than time-limit), while the combat looks like an upgraded version of...Lydie&Suelle? Synthesis system kinda looked a bit like Escha&Logy with all those bar, but I'll take that, having an improved system is always a welcome, as long as it's not an overly convoluted mess (looking at you Mysterious series). Anyway the game looks good. The graphic is definitely a vast improvement over the Arland series. Can't wait to play the game, I'm glad that you have positive views on the game, which means I'm definitely is going to have a good time playing this later. I'm really happy that Gust actually went back to the Arland series, imo modern Atelier is at its best at Arland and Dusk series. btw, I'm also looking forward to Gust's new project announced yesterday : )

Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm is one of my favourite games of all time, and a year or two ago I found out there's an obscene amount of Atelier games. To my disdain, I find that Lydie & Suelle was so stiff that it made me feel like there was no effort put into the game. The story felt nonexistent for the dozens of hours I put into it. I tried Atelier Sophie and I had the same issue. It felt like the series of my favourite title is now only a "kawaii waifu" cashgrab. To this day I regret buying Lydie & Suelle. What hooked me with Grand Phantasm was an amazing story, flavourful characters, good VAs, and a battle system that I dream about to this day. The OST was something I didn't know to appreciate back then, but I find myself coming back to experience nostalgia by listening to it now, ten years later. The aforementioned newer Atelier titles were missing all of those factors. When I moved in the world, it felt like my character glided while a default animation played at a default speed that wasn't adjusted by the developers. Story was just "we are cute girls and we will be the best, watch our cute lifestyle cutscenes" and the battle system felt like if they took out 55% of the old system. I'm afraid to buy this one for those reasons, even though it does look closer to the game I love. I need to watch a playthrough to win me over, if it can manage that. Nevertheless, this review was amazing and you earned an instant subscriber.

(the last time i played an atelier game was Atelier Iris 1). i loved it but i dont think i can play another for a while which is a same considering i also got atelier firis and Atelier Lydie & Suelle at the same time but this one looks good so i expect ill buy it and add it to the pile :D

I am interested in getting into these games. But I can't decide where to play them. Switch or ps4 xD

I've beaten Rorona and I'm about to beat Totori, should I jump to this one or play Meruru first?

My vote would be to finish meruru. You can totally jump to this one, but if you're almost done Arland 2, I'd figure just go right into 3

I also am enjoying this game but honestly my biggest gripe is the age progression of older characters. It's just odd that none of them have really changed much and I always feel like Gust is afraid of their main characters aging, getting married, or just changing over all. Totori now 26, looks almost identical to her 13-14 year old counterpart. I can acknowledge that budget/ time constants probably has a part in this but, still.I really love this game, but, most every character is just a different variant of cute and while it is not inherently a bad thing, it doesn't make the world entirely believable. Atelier Lulua is still my favorite title in the series in terms of gameplay and I highly praise Gust for breathing a breath of fresh air in their core gameplay with this one.

this is cool, i really hope the dusk series gets a HD port to ps4 and a fourth game to go along with it, also. Why havent we gotten a Mana Khemia hd remaster yet??
