📖 Our Story:
We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls! The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.
Follow our journey as we turn this old stone house into a beautiful home 😊.

I love that you used the stones from inside the house to make the patio, it’s absolutely beautiful. I would continue to use these beautiful stones and a wooden bench would look wonderful on the patio. You did an amazing job!

I think a wood beam pergola would be perfect over the terrace to have a place for climbing roses, ivy or beans. The wood stained to match the window casings. It gives a place to string fairy lights to vertical and horizontal elements, provide a little break up of the scorching sun, but still allow the sunshine to come in. A birdbath or water fountain lined in azure blue mosaic tile will add color that reflects the sky. Outdoor square cushions, like those used on boats or patio benches simply placed onto the stone wall will provide comfortable seating and color without any permanent structure,

I know it’s too late to comment but in the spaces you could grow thyme it’s a herb and it’s very good in rock garden type setting. When your feet brush up on it it releases lovely scent. Also succulents on the perimeter like sedums the ground cover variety. They come in different colors and leaf shape so have tiny flowers. Also if you have large pots filled with flowering plants it will add some amazing color. The basic hard scape is set now. You can add plantings to soften the space.

Agreed! Here in California, creeping thyme (pink flowers) are popular between pavers, and the scent is lovely. A few lavenders in bright pots in the patio area for the scent and color would be good, and help to soften the stone as well.

Not if it dry and hot the moss won’t grow. Looks like one the summer heat starts it’s hot hot hot. Maybe they’ll build a pergola for shade seating in the future. Their home is lovely and the views are magical.

A friend did something similar bit instead of grass he transplanted indigenous mosses. We thought he was crazy when he put clumps of moss into his blender, added a milk whey solution blending it all together. The resulting mixture was dribbled on the ground between patio stones. Within a season he had lush green moss growing between the stones. Wishing you and your furry supervisor a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings in your restored home. Peace

Many comments regarding a wooden bench😂… 😮 no, I do not see a wooden bench in your landscape with your house and with your terrace … I see more stone seating/table and lots of seating pillows that are made of water resistant/waterproof material so you don’t need to run and get them when it’s raining❤❤ I do not speak French nor Italian, yet your videos in both languages are extremely soothing and a pleasure to listen to❤ I discovered you a few months ago, and very much enjoy all of your undertakings❤

I was once visiting Los Vagus when it was 114 degrees. It was very hot walking on the sidewalks. At night you could not sit on the rocks that lined the street because the heat from the rocks burned your skin. I like the idea of wood seating on the rock along the patio. I also like the idea of using the vine for shade overhead. I think you are going to have a very functional living area when you cool the patio down a bit.

Congratulations - 100K subscribers! Woo hoo! My recommendation for the terrace would be to be surface it with crushed red granite, compacted to a firm surface, alternated with a different, darker flat stone to place large stone/pottery jars containing flowers or ornamental shrubs, or polished concrete raised garden beds for flowers/herbs. You could also have one or two beautiful outdoor wooden bench seats as well, because you have decent length along the raised terrace. Whatever you decide, I"m sure it will be well-designed and executed. Your outdoor living area will be magnifique!

I think that wood will be perfect - not as a new material, but to match the frames on the doors. This will also help to tie the inside and outside together. The ore you do that, the more it will feel like one cohesive space rather than a series of smaller, different spaces.

I'm impressed with your tenacity! This was yet another hard and tedious job to stick out. I love the look you've achieved and the small perennials will do a great job for looks and function. A wood seat would be very nice and will also be easier to sit on. Glad your planning a pergola because with West exposure it would be unbearable to use in the afternoon. As usual you've thought of all of that already and planned a lovely natural remedy! I look forward to seeing the results. Any guest should have to view a mandatory video of all the hard and tedious work you've gone through to really appreciate what it has taken. Thank you as always.

I like the idea of a wooden deck. It would tie in with the wood framed windows and doors. The terrace looks like a lovely area to relax.

The grass will be lovely, but wherever you are going to put your table and chairs, you might want mortar around your stones in that area instead. With big cracks like those, there will always be one leg of a chair that’s down in one of the cracks and making it impossible to sit comfortably.🙁 The wooden bench with light will be beautiful, and the shade as well! Some flowering plants and vines and it will be perfect!❤️🤗🐝

Gorgeous-I love it! The only thing I’m thinking of is soil can become hydrophobic-especially under hot/dry conditions. If you get water sitting on top of the soil, it will float/run-off/leave a mess. Maybe adding tamped-in pea gravel or crushed granite will help, as those always remain permeable.

The stone patio turned out beautiful and all the material was already there and somewhat flat. Having grass grow between the joints is a good idea. The metal pergola is a must for shade, perhaps adding a potted olive tree in an oversized planter would also help with shade and something green. A wooden bench (or just a wooden platform) on top stone terrace would be much softer than sitting on a rock, but I've also used a rock as a pillow while camping, lol. Honestly, you can do just about anything out there and I would like it. As always, excellent work, ciao!

Simply awesome. I like the idea of going with something like wood for the bench seating. It's natural, would match the surroundings and could be designed to make for very comfortable sitting. With some colorful pillows and a covered area to keep the sun off of you, it will like being on vacation without ever having to leave home.

beautiful as always! One thing to keep an eye on with rain: water buildup near the edge of the house. There is risk of water intrusion by the foundation unless the patio has a very gentle slope down and away from the house. We experienced this with my parents house. The patio was re-set with a five centimeter grade that ran the length of the deck away from the house (about 4 meters).

I do think the wooden bench idea fits a lot better into the pergola and is much softer than using stone, but that is solely a personal view. I feel it allows you to evolve the whole ambience of the inside/outside effect of and on this area. Love the thought you both put into the project. Regards

Agreed . Need to soften the area. Pot plants will also "tone down" the stone. Try bouganvillia or palms in pots for more greenery.

The wooden bench seats are a good idea. It would soften the look of the patio and make it a very inviting place to entertain. Not sure about the lighting beneath the seats but some sconce down lighting the stone walls would be beautiful. Continue the lovely job you are both doing. I enjoy watching your updates/videos

You can always lay the all weather patio rugs on the patio in the summer to add color and break up the all stone aspect. They are good from late spring until mid fall. They will fade but you can then paint them with your own pattern choice.

Great work and I love that you are putting grass between the stones to break the “minerality” of the terrace as well as for drainage. A wooden bench along the wall would be great but if you keep it in stone, the stone will retain the heat in the evening which might be something nice in spring and autumn. I have a stone terrace and it’s facing full south which means that up to late October we can enjoy sitting there with that little bit of extra heat which makes it super enjoyable
