A couple decades ago I watched a video of Hitch at Google promoting, “God Is Not Great”. That one video was enough for me to realize how stupid the Christian faith is (my words describing how I felt). I’m lucky. I didn’t have to slowly & painfully leave religion. He made sense and I was done. So yes, debates & atheist videos help.

Hitch woke me up too. I used to ignore things that made me uncomfortable about my faith. He always put things in a way I was interested in hearing, but what he said never left me any wiggle room when it came to justifying my faith lol. So I stopped believing! It was liberating. Glad I’m not alone

I feel like im missing out on meeting some good people. I have like no friends and i wonder if i could meet some people worth being close friends with at an event like that. Bond over skepticism and science, feel like that would be a good experience. But the only time ive gotten a close friendship with another atheist they turned out to be a narcissist who helped me get addicted to hard hard drugs, then manipulated me into moving out of the state with them and then manipulated me over and over again until i was their puppet constantly getting every moment of my life micromanaged by an unsatisfied monster. Now ive cut ties with them, gotten sober, and im working hard on getting my life together. But having no friends really sucks

Another factor there is that weatherpeople make more specific predictions than [mostly] sunny vs [mostly] not sunny - such as clouds, rain, or other inclement weather as well, not to mention the general time of day that these things will happen. Necessities for a living cell to evolve: Sensory organs (needed to receive information from the external environment). Memory (required for storing received data). Analyzing organs, that is, the brain (required for concluding what organs to be evolved in the body). An evolving organ, and such others will be needed. Without them, how does the cell know what to evolve or how to evolve?! Q1: WHERE DID THESE ORGANS COME FROM TO THE CELL? If you say they come from non-living objects, I have a second question. In order for a non-living object to become a living organism, it must have the necessary structure, the ability to become a living organism, and other needs. Q2: WHERE DID THESE STRUCTURE AND ABILITY COME FROM TO THE NON-LIVING OBJECT? If you say they were developed over billions of years, I have another question. Q3: WHAT CAUSED THAT? And I have some other bonus questions: Q4: WHAT CAUSED BIGBANG? Q5: WHERE DID THE CAUSE OF BIGBANG COME FROM? Q6: WHY DID BIGBANG ONLY HAPPEN ONCE? Q7: WHERE DID OPEN SPACE COME FROM? (I'm not talking about the galaxies or objects that BigBang caused to form, I'm talking about the open space in which the Big Bang happened.) Q8: WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE OPEN SPACE? (I'm not talking about the size of the entire galaxy clusters) If the size is finite, then: Q9: HOW DID OPEN SPACE BECOME FINITE? If the size is infinite, then: Q10: HOW DID OPEN SPACE BECOME INFINITE?

I never went to Camp Windermere for summer camp, but we did make in down there for Bible drill quite a few times. Coincidentally, my atheism story also took me through First Baptist Church of Harvester a few years after Matt would have likely reached adulthood and moved on. I went to various other Baptist churches in the St. Charles area during my childhood only to somewhat unexpectedly realize that none of it was true when I was around 19, or 20. I made a rather dumb decision to tell my parents about this, and they insisted that as long as I was living in their house(I was commuting to college at the time) I was going to join them at FBC-Harvester. And so I did, and would sit in the balcony and read non-religous literature while waiting for the service to end. A few months later I was in a new apartment, and I haven't been back since. Matt, I'm truly sorry to hear about your health issues, and I hope the doctors can get you straightened out soon. I usually agree with Matt on the majority of things, but I gotta say one thing with regard to comments that people are less likely to back down on a position once they’ve made a public profession. I’m exactly the opposite! If I have made a public profession and that profession is publicly demonstrated to be incorrect or untrue, then all I can do is publicly acknowledge that I was wrong and change my position. I simply could not retain a position that has subsequently been demonstrated to be incorrect. That would not just make me a fool but given that my position had been publicly demonstrated to be incorrect, that would PUBLICLY make me look like an even bigger fool if I didn’t acknowledge that I was incorrect and didn’t change my position. I just could not refuse to back down on a previously incorrect public profession. I would feel like an absolute fool, and I can’t do that. I would have no self respect if I knowingly and publicly refused to back down on a profession that had been demonstrated to be incorrect. I’d feel like an idiot. As for the illustration of feeling an obligation to raise your hand if you’re asked whether you know the answer to a question, that’s also the opposite of how I’ve always been. I’ve been extremely reluctant to ‘raise my hand’ and draw unnecessary attention to myself when I don’t know the answer to something. And if I WAS asked a question to which I don’t know the answer, I would admit that I don’t know the answer. After all, I can’t know everything. Why complicate things? I’ve never had any problem with admitting that I don’t know something. I don’t know why there’s people who do, seeing as nobody knows everything.

My whole issue with activism could be classified as selfishness. But to me it is justified. I dont want to donate money. I dont have much to give away in the first place. But i have no assurances that it will make a difference, and I would rather use my money to raise a kid, but even that isnt financially possible at the moment. Im better off saving and investing incase of an emergency. Accidents happen every day, and I can only rely on myself to recover should one happen. I dont want to donate my time. I work a full time job, which takes up much more than 40 hours a week if you add up daily commute time. By the time I get home, cook dinner, clean dishes, and finish other chores, I have 2-3 hours before I have to go to bed to ensure Im getting at LEAST 8 hours of sleep. Im barely able to use that time to stay healthy. But im supposed to also use it to interact with hatful ideas that I disagree with? That sounds like a great way to lose my sanity. The weekends are the only time I have to go out to nature, which is my true passion. But I want to use that time to enjoy nature. Am I supposed to sacrifice all those peacful moments to instead interact with idiots, who have already been presented the facts, but choose to ignore them? Or am I suppsoed to go to the most depressing parts of nature that have been desecrated by pollution and try to fix them? Ahh, nothing like the smell of rotten garbage to get you relaxed for your next week of work. The way I see it, the best I can do is simply vote, and talk to others in my life about voting. To vote for policies that force the people with the MOST money and the MOST time, to use it for good things. To hold people ACCOUNTABLE, no matter how powerful they are. I realize I have it much better than a LOT of people. But there are also a LOT of people that have it better than me. Im just trying to stay happy and healthy in this world of injustice and chaos. And unfortunately, I dont see a way out of this individualistic thinking. The alternative is to sacrifice the individual for a CHANCE at something better. But I cant take that chance.

There's so much here I'd love to respond to and I think that commenting on a tiny thing may distract from the great many things you've talked about, but I also think you did a great job and it's fine, so I'll comment on a tiny detail anyway: the trust in scientists. I would rather say we lost trust in the scientific methods. Those work even if a scientist can't be trusted. The whole gay frogs thing has been published and peer reviewed and is cited and it cites (some) credible sources. The problems with the papers are quite glaring. For instance, several of the papers are referring only to each other and all the papers are published by one scientist. So, anyone with a functional brain can easily figure out that these papers and the scientist behind it are not actually peer reviewed by reputable peers in the relevant fields. it goes without saying that this scientist can't be trusted, but more importantly, the papers can't functionally be used in further studies because those would fail because the information in these studies is for a large part false. Some information is correct. For instance, I think (I'm not a biologist and it's been years since i read any of it so this is all from memory) frogs are vulnerable to sex change in several organs and this can be influenced by chemicals such as hormones. This is used to give credence to the rest of the paper in the public eye. But this is not how science works; it's how public is easily manipulated into relying on thinking errors to come to conclusions. This is abusive and dangerous if done continuously, which it is in many circles; it's normalized behaviour and not considered abusive at all. But slavery was wrong even when it was considered moral and right. Abusive behaviour is still abusive if it's normalized and encouraged by billions of people. None of this will fly in scientific circles though. If your work is not a basis for further research, it will fail in further research and then be rejected and not cited or used in other ways. It's a bit like evolution: if it works, it might survive, if it doesn't work, it will die out. Obviously this will also mean that many myths will survive in the public domain outside of science and faulty papers aren't always retracted, corrected, or removed - that's just not necessary. So, we don't have to trust science. We have to understand how science works and that it does work and we can trust the process because when and where it fails, wrong information will be useless and ignored or corrected and future research will rely on correct information or show flaws in the information. No faith required and we don't even need to trust scientists, although most of them have earned our trust and then some - they like their jobs and increasing their knowledge, so they're likely to do that, based on a functional self demonstrating method, not on faith.
