Which creator?
@otter4370
@otter4370 7 жыл бұрын
Sooo... My body? Nature? Oh, or maybe the *Universe.* None of what you said is a requisite for a creator. I can create a clock, but that doesn't mean I'm the one maintaining it or demonstrating benevolence to it. In fact, I can make it a self-maintaining clock.

My mother made me, and I don't 'turn away' from her. Provide a bloody argument. Otherwise your rhetoric is meaningless and wasted.
@tatern3923
@tatern3923 7 жыл бұрын
Not believing someone's claim does not equal being close minded. It's not our problem if people like you who claim to have that relationship can't even demonstrate that the "person" they are claiming to have a relationship with is actually there. Claiming you have to believe it first before you can "experience it" is textbook 101 con man bullshit. Especially when multiple people claim different (sometimes opposing) things about this "person".
@otter4370
@otter4370 7 жыл бұрын
You sound like that kind of cheesy inspirational quote stuffed into every Disney movie ever. You say you can demonstrate it, then bloody do it. I want to see hypotheses, experiments, graphs, fucking *science.* Anecdotes and rhetoric can only get you so far. To actually *progress,* you need to make math of your claims. And for the record, I've already tried doing that once before in my life. All I learned was that the Universe doesn't care about me, or you, or anyone. You're not special because you think that you're 'enlightened.' You're no closer to the truth than anyone else, and I'm certain that no creator of universes would want a relationship with what crops up within those universes.

I was disturbed to find a 'chain pray' (sic) from one of my American friends on Messenger. I sent back a link to the American Red Cross pointing out that prayer is just hot air without a donation to those being prayed for. No reply so far, and I'm expecting to be defriended, but I don't care. From my vantage point in Europe I can hear my cash talking more loudly than the prayers of hot air.

Funny that Seventh Day Adventists (the church i was part of) kind of learned from this failed "end of the world" predictions and now just say that "no one knows the day nor the hour". They just keep things as vague as they come with the signs like wars or earthquakes, but forgetting that Jesus said that it would happen in the apostles lifetime, and the mental gymnastics they engange on to work around these verses is incredible.

I was in the path of totality in Orangeburg, SC. We fortunately had clear skies. The eclipse was beautiful! I was on a college campus watching it with a group of scientists. My love for science and nature made that moment almost spiritual for me. I'm an atheist, but that was a natural event that I could witness and enjoy with other like-minded people. The joy and wonder I felt could be described as spiritual. Did anyone else feel this way?

Adam and Eve our first parents I was at one time a Christian. I lost my faith by trying to strengthen it with study. "study to show thyself approved". All it did for me is cause more unanswerable questions and fill me with more doubt. I finally got to the point where I realized I could no longer consider myself a believer without proof or evidence, I couldn't believe it. If you want to respond, we can have a dialogue as long as it stays civil.

Cults obsessed with death tend to be the first to declare end times scenarios. While they worry about an unclear demise, the rest of us are trying to lead healthy, safe and considerate lives. Who should be considered more moral in this sense? The cosmic gambler or the earthbound realist?

Kudo's sir. Your parting message is one we need to remember and use, OFTEN. It is through the fruits of Science, that we CAN help those suffering the vagaries of storms and weather. Pray yields nothing tangible for those in need, and only soothes the conscience of those who can't be bothered to make any other effort. They can congratulate themselves for "caring"....while offering nothing of substance to aid those who desperately need it....

Actually there is a point every 27.55 days where the Moon causes a total Solar Eclipse, it's simply that in more than 70% of these cases, the shadow (Umbra) *misses the Planet Earth COMPLETELY* and because the Moon's orbit is an inclined plane relative to the ecliptic of the Earth, by about 5 degrees, there can be two to five visible totalities every year.

The thing that's sad is that people can make some of the worst decisions of their lives by looking for a sign from "god". Not just joining an end-of-days cult, but, praying about which job to take, who to marry, or things like that can result in making illogical choices that bite you later and effect decades of your life. Normal, intelligent people who've been brainwashed by magical thinking can end up going down these paths. It's not like only stupid people can be conned.

Matt, if there is a partial solar eclipse somewhere, then there is a total solar eclipse somewhere else nearby. There is a total solar eclipse pretty much every year---just usually not in America or even the continent of America. Sometimes it's on the south hemisphere. I think the number is somewhere around 1 total solar eclipse every 18 months. It is then you have a partial eclipse in nearby regions.

I enjoyed the 90% eclipse in my backyard with my preacher neighbor, his wife, and his grandson. We could enjoy the power of an eclipse without pretending some god had a special message in an event that could be predicted far in advance. Of course, he is a mainline pastor from a denomination that accepts science. I might believe an eclipse has a message if it happens tomorrow, but then again, maybe there is something missing from my understanding of science.

I saw the eclipse in Salem, Or. Perfectly clear weather. Having seen the eclipse, I could fully understand the terror someone would feel in seeing this happen if they didn't understand what was happening. I'm sure that there have been cultures that performed human sacrifices when they say this happen, and if they did they would breathe easy seeing that it worked. I'm sure they would have made every effort to preserve this solution, ether writing it down, if they had writing, or making sure it was remembered by those responsible for the remembering the history of the tribe. What can you make of seeing something bad starting to happen, doing SOMETHING, that could be ANYTHING, and then that bad thing gets better, how can we know that what we did had any effect at all?

A note on eclipses. There is an astronomical imaginary point required to calculate an eclipse. This is called the moon's NODE. It is the point where the orbit of the moon crosses the imaginary plane created by the Sun and Earth. A SOLAR eclipse happens when the MOON, SUN and NODE all meet in their orbits. A lunar eclipse would have the SUN and NODE on one side and the MOON on the other. This imaginary point (NODE) rotates around the Earth a little over every 19 years. There are actually two NODES calculated, one for the moon crossing from "UP" to "DOWN" and one crossing from "DOWN" to "UP". Nothing to do with Matt's presentation, just, I hope. an interesting tidbit.

There was a man in my Christian office, that thought the end times were going to start in 2012. He did the whole end times prepper thing, and ended up spending a lot of money on stuff he'll never use. This same man, who was an elder in his church, believed that black people were from a separate less intelligent race and not part of God's chosen people! I don't think he had ever met a black person. Needless to say, I was shocked to my core. There are all kinds of religious nuts out there, and some of them have a big platform to spread their hate. We have to shut them down.

Matt, I must confess that the "Miracle of Fatima" in 1917 in an interesting one. I've looked at all the ways of debunking this but they just do not fit. If only a few hundred people were there this would be easier, but the fact that tens of thousands witnessed this makes it quite an interesting case. It would be churlish for me to try and suggest some kind of collective hallucination, especially on the basis of the amount of atheists who were in attendance and their subsequent testimonies and conversions. From an objective standpoint, it does seem that the sun did appear to break cosmic laws (at a localised level) at that specific time and specific place, as was prophesised. I cannot explain how their soaking wet clothes were dried in an instant. The Press were there and the event was reported in the newspapers. The solar phenomenon was also witnessed independently by people several kilometres away who had no knowledge of the of the event. Given the facts, it's certainly a head-scratcher. I've looked at all the counter-arguments, but they seem at best a stretch and at worst absurd.
@christophrichthofen1241
@christophrichthofen1241 3 жыл бұрын
@Skydaddy Myth-Busters Thanks, I had already looked into that, but I've seen other photos from the Press that show rain and the crowd with umbrellas. It still seems perplexing that the many atheists present who simply attended attested to the miracle and also that the solar phenomena was witnessed by others who were unaware of the event several kilometres away. I agree there are indeed some inconsistences in the gospels but having looked into them I must confess that they seem to be pretty small and mainly due to translations. I've done a lot of detailed research into the Fatima incident and it remains a complete anomaly it seems to me.
@christophrichthofen1241
@christophrichthofen1241 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The difficulty for me Skydaddy started when began when I started looking into the cosmological and teleological arguments. After doing that, it seemed much more likely for the existence of a God than not IMHO. The statistical probabilities (even within the multiverse principle) challenged by stance as a non-believer. From a biblical perspective, the whole Christian philosophy basically hinges on one event; the resurrection. Accounts from historians verifying the exponential rise of Christianity following the death of Jesus Christ is hard to dismiss, especially as the Jewish nation rejected the very notion of the resurrection outright. Such a radical and sudden "about-face" could only have arisen if there were hard evidence of the event as they had already seen countless false prophets come and go. I speak to you respectfully when I say there are valid reasons for believing in Christianity.
@christophrichthofen1241
@christophrichthofen1241 3 жыл бұрын
@Skydaddy Myth-Busters Skydaddy, no need at all for the conversation to turn hostile. I know where you're coming from and I'm sure you're probably a nice, intelligent person. My non-Christian friends consider me a pretty level headed chap, but it's absolutely fine if you don't want to respect my views - I will certainly continue to respect yours. It's completely up to you what you believe but there's nothing wrong with us debating. Please try to understand that scientific evidence isn’t the ONLY type of evidence. Many truths exist that we cannot prove through physical evidence but are a fact. Consciousness being one. We don’t have physical evidence that life is meaningful or that murder is wrong. These statements are true, but not because we have found physical evidence to support them. The same is true for the love you have for your partner, mother, father, brother, sister, friend....you can't actually prove your love for them at all. Even if you exhibit the usual behaviours that come with loving someone, how can a cynical person be sure there isn't some strange ulterior motive? Just because they can't "see" your love (or indeed taste, smell, hear or touch it) doesn't mean your love doesn't exist. You can't find a plastic cup with a metal detector! Having said all that, I do think that are some supernatural events that demand attention. As I've already said, nobody has ever managed to provide a rational explanation for the eye witness testimonies of the many atheists who attended the Miracle of Fatima and attested to the awesome power of miracle. Not to mention those who knew nothing of the event and were several km away, yet also independently witnessed it. Why dismiss out of hand these two groups of people given that they had absolutely nothing to gain from it? I'm not sure why you consider it a trap, but there is and has always been One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. This was the church founded by Jesus Christ Himself 2,000 years ago. Have a good evening.

@Skydaddy Myth-Busters Not at all Skydaddy, I'm enjoying my conversation with you. No, push back is good....it's just that the tone of your replies seems a little condescending and contemptuous, but that's fine (I'm sure you haven't taken a dislike to me personally...actually, maybe it's best if I don't ask that question LOL! ) It's a shame that you seem unwilling / unable to debate with me in a rational manner and respond to the specific points I've already raised such as the sudden and exponential rise of Christianity in a Jewish nation that outright rejected the concept of the resurrection. I was also hoping for a counter-argument for the hundreds of atheist testimonies after Fatima, also the verification of the event from the independent witnesses who objectively reported the phenomena several km away and didn't know never mind care about the event. I must confess I've become a little bored with the usual monologue of untenable arguments and the long held atheistic fallacies from various people about the Catholic faith you see. Perhaps you're were rushing, but if you care to re-read my last post you'll see that I didn't actually say that consciousness proves God. However, I DID give this as just one of example of something that certainly exists in the absence of any empirical evidence. Ask the best neurologist in the world and they'll be the first to concede this. Let's turn the tables for a second. What if someone were to say to you that consciousness is nothing more than an absurd, unverifiable, magical and delusional figment of your imagination? You get my point. Friend, you seem to know very little about Canon Law. Like I said, there is one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The different rites in the Catholic church simply embrace different traditions, the important thing is that these rites all remain in full communion with the Holy See. Yes, they come from distinct cultural backgrounds and from all corners of the earth, yet each of these twenty-four Churches all profess the same Catholic faith. Within these traditions, is the same unbroken Tradition (big “T”) from apostolic times. So....there we are. If you honestly feel that the Gospels are nothing more than a bunch of fairy tales I would recommend you read "Can We Really Trust the Bible?" by Craig Blomberg. Funnily enough, he's one of my Protestant brothers. You appear to like all things rational, so I've suggested this book due to his pragmatic approach in drawing together the huge number of supporting manuscripts (over 15000 by the way) along with the additional evidence cited from non-religious historians and scholars. I noticed you seem to associate faith with "fear". That makes me pretty sad and is not my experience at all. Maybe I should get on to this after your next response. I hope you are doing fine today.

@Skydaddy Myth-Busters It's disappointing you are consistently ignoring the information in my posts Skydaddy. I'm seriously starting to lose faith in your objective rationality! As I've already said, there is as a huge amount of historical evidence for the resurrection. Please don't take my word for it though, why not research it yourself. The journalist Lee Strobel did exactly this. A vehement atheist, Strobel was absolutely determined to disprove the resurrection of Jesus Christ and he set out to do just that. However, his final analysis of all the evidence rocked his world to the core. Check out his book "The Case for Christ" (or if you prefer, watch the movie of the same name). As I've said before, the whole theology of Christianity rests on the resurrection. If anyone can disprove the resurrection, rest assured I'll be the very first to give up my faith. But all the evidence is totally to the contrary. Pardon me, but you seem very contemptuous towards people of faith, yet you've presented to me absolutely no arguments to show that Atheism is true. On the other hand, I've given you several arguments (including scientifically verifiable ones) in support of Christian Theism. I was hoping that you would actually engage in debating my points rather than going off on different monologues. You have some pretty warped perceptions of the Christian faith. It had a very distinct start 2000 years ago thanks to Jesus Christ alone. It is not based on any other imaginings, thoughts, philosophy as you try to claim. You ridicule the Holy Trinity, even though this comes right from the teaching of Our Lord Jesus Christ. You say that if people choose to disobey God, He will send them to Hell. That's plain wrong - we chose Hell for ourselves. There's no limit to God's unfathomable mercy, apart from what we limit ourselves. If someone totally rejects God and wants nothing to do with Him in this life, what makes you think their sentiments would change in the next life? Hell is the eternal separation from God and, as such, is exactly what such souls desire. We ultimately get what we want....isn't that fair?? Of course, things are not always black and white, so there's the matter of Purgatory. Incorrect. Consciousness is not observable. Please Google this. One cannot look inside someone’s head and see their feelings and experiences. We know that consciousness exists not from observation and experiment but by being conscious. The only way we can find out about the consciousness of others is by asking them, we cannot directly perceive their experience, we can only ask what they're feeling. This is just one example of something that exists that you cannot see, touch, taste, hear or smell. I'd like to see you trying to prove consciousness in your so called 'court of law'. Like I said, you cannot find a plastic cup with a metal detector. I'm not sure why you think I would hate any particular part of science. Science is wonderful and is a brilliant resource that God has given us. You try to pit science against religion, but I say the two are not at all incompatible with one another. In fact, it's directly thanks to verifiable scientific studies that the cosmological and teleological arguments for God exist. Did you know it was a Catholic priest, Georges Lemaître, who discovered the Big Bang? Furthermore, science reveals that the initial conditions of the universe were fine tuned for the existence of intelligent life with a degree of precision and delicacy that simply defies human comprehension. For example, if the atomic weak force were altered by 1 part out of 10 to the 100th power, it would not have permitted a life-giving universe. Not to give any mention of the other variables. Or perhaps you have an aversion to quantifiable statistics too? By the way, I'm still awaiting your thoughts about the testimonies from the many atheists who were in attendance at Fatima and also of those who independently witnessed the miracle several km away. Sorry, but God alone is ultimate truth. In Christianity, this is expressed through the person of Jesus Christ, God incarnate, who is the way, the truth and the life. Yes, crimes are committed by Christians as is the same with atheists. We are ALL broken and in need of Christ's redemption. If you have any doubt of God's love for you, look no further than the Cross. You may not believe in God, but He still believes in you.

The August 21 passed over Yellowstone National Park and the new earthquake zone. And the eclipse hit the west coast at the same time that the sun set on Israel. It exited at the 33rd parallel. So there are lots of coincidences that Christians believe it is a sign. When Jesus died, the area went dark. They had another eclipse. And he said that the wicked and adulterous generation would only get the sign of Jonah which many believe that was the resurrection of Christ. But the Christians who believe that the eclipse was a sign say that there was an eclipse over Ninevah before Jonah came along. And the one in 2024 will cross over the earthquake zone so that is why many Christians believe that judgement is coming.

How is it possible to know, to verify, that anything, let alone something, is " a sign from God" if, as alleged by his apologists, he, or maybe she, is independent of space and time. How do we determine which of the millions and billions of cosmological events which happen every day are a sign, and which are not. If God in his magnificence orchestrates all cosmic events how do we distinguish between those that are, so to speak, regular non-sign events and those that are intended as signs by a deity who apparently expects us to interpret cosmic events as signs without further corroboration? If the moon splits in two as the result of a collision with an asteroid is that a sign from God or not? Perhaps it indicates that we'd better buck our ideas up on recalcitrant earth or we're in for a similar fate. But how do we know that unless God tells us that's what it means. And if he has to tell us what his intentions are in order for us to interpret the meanings of his signs why doesn't he stop beating around the bush and tell us to our face?

At the time that Mary (as Venus) is due to give birth, she and her husband Joseph (Egyptian Seb) travel from their home in Nazareth (constellation Cancer) to Joseph's ancestral home in Bethlehem (constellation Virgo) to register in the Census of Quirinius. Finding no place for themselves in the inn (constellation), Mary (mother of all gods and men) gives birth to Jesus (newborn sun) and she places him in a manger (feeding trough) the constellation of the bee/manger. An angel of the Lord (a planet) visits the shepherds guarding their flocks in nearby fields (spring-summer) and brings them "good news of great joy": "to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, (summer solstice) who is the Messiah (KRST/Mummy) the Lord." The angel tells them they will find a child (baby sun) wrapped in bands of cloth (a mummy) and lying in a manger (beehive). This birthdate is identical to the Egyptian Anubis and John the Baptist. = John the Baptist and Jesus are the same sun. Jesus = alpha (Taurus) through Omega (Libra) and J.B. = Omega (fall equinox) to Alpha (spring equinox). J.B. = fall-winter and J.C. = spring-summer = the same sun.
