Eh, imo her argument is one of the weakest. Half of the 20 years Ody was gone was because of the Trojan war. And the Cyclops thing didn't account for more than a small part of what else kept him from getting home, yet Aphrodite acts like 'spiting the Cyclops' took years and years. Also, Ody didn't 'let' his mom do anything. When someone says someone else has let a person do something, 'let' implies that someone else knew that person was doing that thing. Ody didn't even know his mom HAD died until he saw her in the Underworld. She's basically casting blame that isn't Ody's to bear like he should, and attributing fault that isn't his to him. A better argument would have been something about the families of his men never getting to see their husbands/fathers/brothers/etc again.

@WittySomething2 ай бұрын
@PineMountainMusician It wouldn't have if Eury hadn't opened the bag. That wasn't on Ody, if his crew had LISTENED they would have made it back. Yes, one could argue that if he hadn't doxxed himself to Poly none of that would have happened, but consider the following. Poly could have just told Poseidon "Hey dad this guy who said he had 600 people waiting on the beach came and murdered one of my sheep and then blinded me can you find and smite him pls kthx." Would Poseidon have listened? Maybe, maybe not. But he'd have known immediately who Poly was talking about from just that, and he would have still been able to find Ody since the sea is his domain. So even if he hadn't spited Poly, his fleet would have likely still gotten assaulted and all that. But a lot of what happened after Ody doxxed himself was caused by his crew being idiots, not because of Ody himself.

Sure, maybe characters like Polities and Eury influenced, but in the end HE’S the captain and has the final say in where they land. Not to mention, even if Eury didn’t open the bag, do you really think that if they made it to Ithica Poseidon would just be like “oh whoops guess I can’t get my revenge now.” Obviously not. He probably would have done his whole ruthlessness thing right outside of ithica, or would have done what he said he would in get in the water, or something else. But there’s no way he would just suddenly drop it. In all reality, the only thing Eury probably did by opening the bag was changing the backdrop of where all the men died.

Someone pointed out to me the main reason for Zeus' anger was not because he lost a game. Zeus, among other things is god of order, law and judgement. He had already made a judgement on Odyseus, to send him to Calypso. Athene is challenging that decision, and when she gets the others to agree with her Zeus sees that as them saying his judgement was wrong. He's angry at being challenged and at his judgement being deemed as wrong. It's even part of the lyrics, "Show her I'm the judgement call..."
@serendipitishАй бұрын

Odysseus was distraught upon first arriving at Calypso’s island, but you can heard (and see) how quickly he begins to freak out. He didn’t call Athena though, perhaps still hoping he could find his own way to escape. If someone like a god/goddess or really any higher power wanted you... There really wasn't much you could do. Additionally, on the original oddysee, whenever odysseus was consenting for something, it was for the sake of gaining something from said person. He never really consented with the idea of cheating in mind. His love was always penelope. And calypso. Don't get me started on that girl💀Now I understand why she's like this... Jorge definitely makes this aspect more morally “black and white”: with Circe, there are no extra-curriculars; and with Calypso, it’s left up to interpretation whether they never actually go that far or if they did, it wasn’t really consensual. I did have someone jump on me for saying the same as you, that Hera never cared whether a relationship was consensual or not. That said; it always involved her husband when she went after his victims. Personally, I think this boils down to Athena pulling an Obi-Wan: “What I told you was true… from a certain point of view.”

In this adaptation of the Odyssey Odysseus doesn't cheat on Penelope directly or indirectly - it's explicit with Circe (denies her advances in there are other ways, which also is part of why Circe lets him go in EPIC) and less direct with Calypso (nothing hints at Calypso raping him but we can safely assume that it doesn't happen). Great reaction! A lot of the music is repeated in Epic, if you relisten you can hear a lot of repeating patterns and motifs, in this case Warrior of the mind playing at the end. Also notice how in we'll be fine, both Athena and Telemachus sing some words the same way Odysseus and Athena sang "mind" in warrior or the mind (maybe he'd be *fine* - life could be that *bright* - I don't think he'll *mind* - if not your friend then *mine*)

glad i'm not the only one who thinks that Calypso didn't SA'd Ody in Jorge's EPIC. Barbara Wangui's audition and demo leaned more on Calypso's "innocence" and playfulness. Even in the official animation, the character was more playful and excited. AND (possible spoiler) Calypso's next song wouldn't be written that way if she was graping him for 7 years.

@kaipalaran8005 hard disagree with both of you here. Being a victim of this exact kind of person, plays all innocent and cute, but manipulative and destructive without even being aware they were wrong. She thought she had every right to this man, which is VERY evident in her lyrics. I heard with my own ears, years ago, "you'll be happy and safe with me, you don't need to go anywhere!" For over a year. No one believed me when I told them. People laughed, "but she's so cute!" "Look at her past, she's just desperate for affection!" And seeing all these comments denying she could do it for the same reasons I heard spat in my face for months... it upsets me. Just because we get a song giving her reasons in the future does not excuse or invalidate her crime. She's just saying the line that's the title of the song (no spoilers) because she doesn't want to take any blame for her actions. Making him look like the bad guy for leaving. Same exact thing happened to me too. Believe what you want, but I can't hear these songs without hearing my past.
@akkimylo32862 ай бұрын
@@kaipalaran8005 Yeah that's what I'm going off of as well. Athena's line itself is enough to confirm it though imo, I feel like this story doesn't even need to get into the question of whether being raped is cheating at all since it just seems to imply that nothing of the sort happened (more so after the clear detraction from the original with Circe). EPIC makes his loyalty (from a modern, not ancient Greece standpoint) a core part of Odysseus's character and adding Calypso raping him as a plot point just doesn't really fit the narrative or add anything to the story the way it's presented here as there's neither time for that to be explored nor is it interesting for characterization of either her or Odysseus. Having Calypso be a "well-meaning" jailer drives the same point across as what the original Calypso would for people reading it back then, as sex and rape was viewed differently.

@@karutasilver we are not denying that Calypso still trapped him for 7 years and he agonized over all that trauma she caused because of her refusal to let him leave + past events. what we're arguing is the rape most likely did not happen as we believe the casting, direction, and animation are trying to tell us they are diverging from that narrative. it's the distinction of what i believe to be canon in terms of the musical that "no rape happened at all" vs "rape happened but that's okay coz she's cute" both equally bad, but that line not being crossed is an important distinction for me.

That heart can't heal. I wish they could have finagled a line about his wife and son and not wanting THEM to also die of a broken heart since they still love him. or something like that. But I know lyrics can be restricting. Still love it. I know others are saying it, but I'd say Coercion (to put it lightly) doesn't really count as cheating. I know there's different versions of the Oddessey but to all the ones I'm familiar with none of the times he slept with other women was because he wanted to. He was spelled, or had no choice. You can't really tell a goddess no. And even if you do it probably doesn't matter. So I think even if it followed what happens in the epic more closely in that regard I'd still say he never cheated. Also that last bit of music you recognized is from warrior of the mind. The bit where Oddyseus is showing Athena his son, it transitions from warrior of the mind to legendary. And then back into warrior of the mind during his final push.

37:40 I think this might be an inside joke because the person voicing Hera (Posey I think?) was affectionately nicknamed "Cher-a" by the community due to her low, disco-ey, distinctive voice😂

Nope, it's been part of Epic since before she was cast as Hera.

@@tsukihimeyfan pretty sure it was a reference to another song outside of epic and that nickname was given by Teagan (Athena) back when she used to do all the female voices

something i dont get and haven't seen anyone point out with the Aphrodite part is why she blames Odysseus for his mothers passing. It wasn't him that caused her death, it was Eurylochus opening the bag when they were so close to landing on Ithaca that caused her to throw herself into the sea in despair over her sons "death". Makes no sense that they blame Ody when it was the betrayal of his second in command.

I’ve never done this for a reaction channel before, but I’m coming back for seconds because I loved your reactions to the animatics so much, I watched this video the day it released and I’m going to watch it again. I hope you choose to go back and watch some animatics (they add so much to the story) for this musical soon! ( watch gigis first and second animatic for the first 2 songs of the Troy saga as a recommendation)

Hera's literally just vibing. She didn't care about the contest, she was just here to dance on Zeus' time. And yeah, like many said, Odysseus never cheated because he never had an option not to. Circe, witch goddess, daughter of *the sun*, had half his men dead to rights if he didn't do it with her, and Calypso, daughter of Atlas, who controlled the island, kept him entrapped and used him to her heart's content since he could physically not do anything about it. She's a goddess, inherently they would never be on equal footing.
@xionnoctis79082 ай бұрын
Pretty sure the instrument you're asking about for Calypso is a what's known as a steelpan or steel drum. I had to take an intro to world music class in college and watched a video on them. They were developed in Trinidad and Tobago out of 55-gallon steel oil drums and can be shaped to have multiple impact points per drum for different sounds. They were also used in Disney's animated rendition of little mermaid for "Under da Sea". although they're more of a west indies/Caribbean instrument the sound of it is definitely fitting for Calypso and this song. Hope this answer helped.

I'm looking forward to that "sticky end" so much. As to his nickname, it was never used until it was used by the person who betrayed him, after the betrayal. After that it is used by the Goddess / Titaness that has him enslaved, and then by a God who is deciding his fate.
