The way these teenagers were written to have the most exciting and scandalous love lives is something that will never NOT be weird to me. No wonder we were all terrified of high school 😂 Media shows it as a place filled with sex, drugs, bullying, violence, etc. (of course there are schools that probably have these things, but not as dramatic as they make it seem on TV)

At times, it was a bit much, but sometimes stuff like this happened, just not to one girl. Jenna was like a combination of multiple girls' stories at my school, except the "suicide" storyline. It was much more subtle and less dramatized and sensationalized, because it was real life and not a TV show.

As someone who’s mother was abusive and emotionally neglectful while I was growing up, the mom’s character arc is definitely realistic(esp the cycle of abuse part). She’s been making amends consistently for years and is now my best friend.

I loved awkward so much as a teen and I identified with Jenna's feelings a lot, she had a really low self-esteem and she was always afraid that the guys were just playing her or that she was too inferior to them. A lot of the stupid things she does are mainly because she's insecure and wants to feel a little bit in control. I feel like the show depicts perfectly what is like dating in high school, it's a lot of drama because you're immature and you enter this toxic pattern where you know it's a bad relationship but you keep coming back to it because you're forced to see that person every day. I think this becomes clearer after they breakup and go to different colleges, when she comes home she's a really different person and she's made to feel awkward again and falls back to her old patterns, and consequently wants to be with Matty again.

Haro plays Clark Stevenson here and Mateo in EoA. P.S-great video as always Athena!!!!

I used to love this show (but, even back then, I knew it was cringe, so I don't think I would survive a rewatch. thank you for your service lol). From what I remember, the original showrunner left after s3 so I always wondered if that's why it felt like an ending, because, to her, it *was* an ending. It was her last season and she wanted to give the characters a good send off/goodbye before she left. Also, the teacher was played by Anthony Michael Hall from The Breakfast Club and I think some of his scenes were meant to be a nod to that (like him reading Jenna's paper at the end of s3 with Jenna's voiceover just like how Vernon read the letter, with Brian's voiceover, at the end of TBC -- I'm sure there were other moments but after, like, 10 years that's the only one I can still remember lol) Anyway, sorry for the long comment, loved the video!

OMG I thought the same the first time I watched the show. The end of S3 it fell like a definitive final and, in my opinion, it should have been the end of the story because the main conflict was solved. Jenna gained self confidence and she was ready to show herself to the world. And if they wanted to continue the story... I think that the development of S4 and S5 could be a waaaaaay better 😅

I kinda wish the plot moved more like New Girl, where the other characters get their moment and just intertwine with other characters; just so it didn't keep going like a one-trick pony that died and kept getting beaten. Though at some point (maybe after the Colin sub-arc) Jenna and Matty should have just called it quits and moved on with their lives. I feel like her mother needed to prove herself some more to be forgiven.

ATHENA! PLEASE, WHENEVER YOU CAN, can you review the MTV show “Finding Carter” ? I remember me and my two younger sisters watching the first few episodes and thinking it was sooooo good before our mom happened to watch part of an episode where Carter’s mom basically told Carter’s best friend since childhood (who was a high school boy) to do the do with Carter at party they were having (Carter’s also in high school.) !!!! So now I totally understand why my mom didn’t want us watching it anymore! but I was so invested back then I just watched the rest of the show on a random website in secret 😅 it is also a WILD ride and was made around 2014 but it has a fairly interesting plot and slightly less offensive characters compared to some of the other MTV shows in this genre

I won’t lie. If I had a door in my bedroom leading outside at 15 years old…I would have rarely used it and never for sneaking out. And if it had that many windows, I would have had my dad change it for a normal wood door cuz fuck windows. Too much glass. And more importantly, it would be significantly easier for creepers to creep on me or break in and hurt or kidnap me or otherwise, and I have always been that paranoid of a person, even at 15 and younger, that a door with even a little bit of windows would have freaked me out…I suppose you could say I was a paranoid, introverted, goody toe shoes.

Are you fr! I'm so excited! I finished rewatching the show like last week and I thought there had to be like somebody, anybody talking about it and all there was on youtube were clips from the official yt channel, I'm so happy somebody else is aware of this mess of guilty pleasure show

idk if anyone watched Finding Carter but I think you should do a video on that show too. Awkward, Faking It, and Finding Carter was like the MTV non-reality show trifecta for me tween/teen me just ate that shit up

Dude this show was MAD! Almost logical enough to follow but just insane enough to think it wasn't real. No one I knew watched when it was airing and now I look back on certain plot lines like - surely I dreamt that?! Hahah thanks for the trip down memory lane 😅

Watching this in 2011 when I was 14 was honestly the best thing ever. It was especially comforting since at the time I was living in a group home

Jenna's haircut bothered me so much, I don't know if it was just me but the fringe was so unflattering for her head shape and I couldn't unsee it

You should do my favorite obscure horror show, Dead of Summer. Shit is messed up. You should also do Finding Carter. I feel like these shows have just been lost and buried but they were such epitomes of my teen years.
