You missed one of the most amazing coffee shops, guys! "2 goulies and 2 mpoukies". Nikos and Tânia are well known baristas from Creta that have been competing many years in national and international events. Really friendly atmosphere and socking consistency in their daily espresso shots. 😉
@keithpp14 жыл бұрын
Correct, except Nikos prepares the food and Tânia brews the coffee. Closes early for Athens, and when closed, will not find. Sadly the video highlights lack of knowledge of Athens coffee scene. Cannot explore Athens within a couple of days. Nor drive everywhere. Walk, everywhere within walking distance in the centre. And on a wet cool day, take the Metro and visit Mind the Cup. medium.com/the-little-bicycle-coffee-shop/standart-guide-to-athens-coffee-culture-810c2b1e705

Agreed. Too little time in any one coffee shop and gives no impression of the coffee shop, a couple days insufficient time to visit coffee shops let alone Athens, and in Athens walk or catch the Metro. If anything video sadly highlighted lack of understanding of Athens coffee scene.

Nothing about the taste, just showing the brands 👎
@keithpp14 жыл бұрын
No, not showing brands. The coffee shops visited would be insulted if referred to as brands. They are coffee shops where they take a great pride in what they serve. Exceptions Samba and Coffee Island. Samba at best mediocre coffee, Coffee Island the Greek Starbucks.

Coffe culture came to Athens from turkey otherwise Greek people like alcoholic drink . culturally this poor European country look like turkey.
@lastmountpit4 ай бұрын
Yes, coffee wasn't popular in Greece until recently (after WWI). People would drink shots of alcoholic drinks (tsipouro, raki) in the morning or during their lunch break. Coffee culture came to Greece with the Greek refugees from Mikra Asia and Pontos. Greek coffee though, is grinded and brewed differently from turkish coffee, because people here were using flour grinders to grind it, so it's much finer than the already fine Turkish coffee. Explosion in popularity of coffee in Greece however, happened when instant iced coffee started getting served. That transformed into today's freddo espresso and freddo capuccino, during the third wave coffee movement. Cultural wise, for sure Greeks are a lot like Turks but also a lot not alike and that's because they both are religion heavy countries and their respective religions are very much apart. Greeks were influenced by the Turks during the turkish occupation but that went the other way as much as. The difference between the west coast turkish cities and people versus the eastern ones is a proof.

We drink so much coffee... from babies.... all day.... all stages of life... and, in terms of taste and history, we stand in the middle between West and East, and with a food palate that goes thousand of years back. The only enemy is contemporary neoliberal capitalism, its new spreading market culture and aesthetics... It homogenises and - at the same time - kills everything.... Resist and pick the good from the bad from what you see.

I agree taresso, one of the best coffee shops in Athens. They spent too little time in Athens and showed little understanding of the coffee scene in Athens. Coffee Island, the Greek Starbucks, no one who loves coffee would would be seen dead in Coffee Island, any more than they would visit Starbucks or Coffee Berry (another Greek Starbucks).
