4 more things to visit but they aren't around the center of Athens. The first is a visit to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Located to the crossroads of the main Avenue leading from Athens Riviera to Athens ( Syngrou Street) and the avenue that crosses all the way from Pireas all of Athens Riviera up to Cape Sounion where the temple of Poseidon is (which is also a must visit if you have more than 3-4 days to stay in Athens. The center has an equally good trail through gardens (not so developed yet as it's less than 15 years of age) also has a canal where people can sail with the help of an instructor (that isn't for free though). On the summer operates a huge open air cinema. But it's free if you want to visit it's terrace on the rooftop where there are usually 2 cafeteria's working where you can enjoy view to the sea or view towards Pireas or better to the north view towards Athens. I think you can use a telescope installed there and you can see also the Parthenon and Acropolis from there. Also a good place to chill out cause there is almost certain that there is a breeze from the direction of the sea. In the center there is the National Library with books and digital copies to most of them. Also the opera is housed there and plenty of plays get to be aired there. Across the street on Syngrou but two blocks into the area is the best digital Planetarium in the Balkan Peninsula and equal to some other very advanced as the equivalent French German or Swedish ones. Various shows made by its computer system with unparalleled graphics system. Ticket is very cheap about 10 euros and the schedule of plays refreshes often. 3 visit the top of the hill of Castella to watch the sunset and moreover the view towards the Riviera of Athens, view to the city of Athens and in some spots to look over the yacht port under the hill. Recommend to stay further into the night as the view of the shining lights turn on to the city and its Riviera is a sight not to miss. Finally visit the end of the right side of Zeas port to enjoy a spectacular more complete view of Athens Ruviera stretching for kilometers across the sea in front of you.

Stavros Nicharos is definitely a great free thing to do here. You could spend all day there! Thanks.

Don't forget the archeological museum, they will give you a free ticket to visit the cafe if you ask, and there is a lovely garden and many sculptures in the adjacent courtyard that is free to view.

The Acropolis Museum is one of my favorite places in Athens. There are a handful of free days, but none during the popular summer months. If you’re passing by, you can walk around it and see some of the digs below the glass floor. There’s an owl of Athena on a tall metal pole outside the entrance that’s free to see and worth a walk! It’s very easy to miss if you’re busy going in or out of the museum! They’ll also allow you inside to look through the museum gift shop for free! It’s air conditioned in there! One of my favorite things to do inside is visit the exhibits I love best, or sit in the reading room for hours and hours. The beaches around Athens are free. I like to stay at a hotel not too far from the airport and walk to the sea. There’s also some museum exhibits at the airport that are free! Meandering is also free, and I spend more time just wandering around than anything. (Take water!)

I think you can also go to the cafe for free. But not sure. It is a great place to escape the heat for sure. The sea is always a good idea.
@TheGlitterGlobe Жыл бұрын
That would make sense! Because when you leave the cafe, they recheck your ticket! (Which I’ve somehow managed to put somewhere that takes me ten minutes to find!)

If you are done with Athens you might try Piraeus. The Metro takes you directly to the harbor. From there you could walk to Passalimani, Marina Zeas and Mikrolimano. You could then walk to the new Metro station "Dimotiko Theatro" and return to Athens from there.

Three things come to mnd, 1, megaro maximou garden, the presidents redence is open to the public on Suundays, i.ds required, (2 & 3 are a little outside of town but 2. marathon lake and damn. the other is 3. schinia beach & marsh where the battle of Marathon took place and if there is a good southernly wind , kite surfers meet to play with the waves, its a beautiful site to see,

I didn’t know you could go in the President’s residence! That’s cool. Those are far but if you have a car then not so far.
@magureveeru Жыл бұрын
Yes the garden. It is not big but very nice to stoll around Its only on Sundays. As for Marathon, yea you kind of need a car or friends with cars. There are busses to the area but you need someone to take you up to the lake. .
