Athens Services' Infamous Christmas Recycling Overload

Down where Athens Services collects in Redondo Beach, CA, residents are known from past footage to rarely ever crush or even flatten their boxes after Christmas... resulting in the Athens employees and their trucks' packers to do all the work, unfortunately. You will see that what comes out of the carts seems to be much less than what looks SHOULD be packed in the carts - and that's because many people (aka inconsiderate dumbasses) stack maybe one or two whole boxes inside the carts, and then leave a pile of other bags and unflattened boxes beside the cart for the crew to manually chuck into the hopper (which is quite frankly entertaining)
First is 912 which does Matt's (ATSF Pony) route. Very personable and friendly driver (I think he said his name was Joel) driving an ACX paired with a McNeilus FL and a Curotto Can.
Next is another ACX paired with a Heil Rapid Rail. Due to the terribly small hopper size, 914 had to take a few too many manual packing breaks. Heil obviously did not anticipate the Rapid Rail collecting mountains of uncrushed boxes.

Great video!! Always enjoy seeing Athens of Redondo recycling collections, especially if it's after Christmas! If you ask me the Rapid Rail packer probably isn't the best for packing cardboard, seems that they tend to clog easily from what I've seen. Enjoyed seeing the cart lines of recycle. I think watching the helpers throwing the excess recyclables into the truck is pretty fun as well. Great job with this one!

Ah the good ol' beach cities lol lots of crazy set outs out there. The Curotto Can was a ton of fun to watch! Miss when the Curottos double dumped 32s, that was a lot of fun to see. I'm actually really surprised at the amount of Republic carts on route still. The line at 9:00 was really sweet! Hardly ever see that kind of thing, usually they have a recycling Dumpster for that. Any idea why they don't? 11:46 was insane! Never seen a RR packed like that. Sketch with the helper climbing in with the hopper in motion lol Fun video! Always love these post Christmas pick ups.

+WMmaster626 Thanks! Matt and I were often talking about how much Consolidated has franchised as well as the need for dumpsters at some of these complexes. I have never seen an RR do that much either, and I have edited that part out with the helper as so not to get him in trouble. Thanks again for the comment!

Excellent work! Wow I don't think I've seen anything as unsafe as what that helper with the rapid rail did. Absolutely ridiculous, all it takes is for him to slip on that hopper cover and he's toast and the fact that the driver was revving the packer at the same time too....

Nice video! It's a shame residents can't take the time to crush boxes and that they just leave other people to do it, 912 is pretty nice, pretty fast too. I liked that cart at 3:16, There was also some cool line ups too like at 5:10 and 8:43. 914 was pretty packed lol.

Flattened boxes arent that much easier to take sometimes... the issue tends to be stuff just getting stuck above the blade. I do think that taking boxes might be a whole lot easier if you just stopped the blade while you load them... :P

Dang, that's a lot of stuff! Recycle is collected weekly, correct? Even with every-other-week collection, we still don't have this amount of stuff. I personally think this would be more efficient if it was collected manually with a RL. Seems like it really jams up the packers on both the FL and the Rapid Rail. Someone should get some GoPro footage of that! Any areas around you that still have manual recycle collection? I was fortunately able to get some footage by me after Christmas of manual stuff, but it's all been in the low 30s and pretty hard to bike in that weather. Enjoy the SoCal winters! Great video!

+garbageproductions1 Ikr?? Collected weekly, should be bi-weekly even. If this neighborhood was collected every other week, they'd need at least a truck per street lol. Sadly, no areas in LA County have manual recycle collection, although there are a few areas with manual greenwaste as well as trash, such as in mobile home parks. Its been in the 30's here as well, and most of us won't even go outside lol. Never been a "true" winter in SoCal. Thanks for the comment!

+garbageproductions1 Most lots here have at least 2 units on them, so it's more an issue of dense routes than collection frequency. As for the FL, it was less of an issue of struggling with cardboard, and more just that he was packing out.
