I saw this in the late 1970s. After a crummy round in a four ball, I went straight to the driving range to work on my irons. Seemed every shot was a push / fade and most all went the same distance! Some kid came up and said he could help (turned out he was the new assistant pro). He realigned my arms just like your video. Next day, I scored the best tournament round in my life, two under. Shots were much longer with a slight draw. We won our flight by 15 strokes. He illustrated the way to align them, which was to stand behind me and place the butt of my grip into my left elbow and lay the shaft over the crease in my right elbow. It pointed straight to the target. Great video!

I love this! I also read that classic book by Ben Hogan and it messed me up for a long time. There are others that also teach the idea of getting your elbows close together and there are training aids to help do it! I watched your video and hit some practice shots and wow, from the first ball it just felt great. I am amazed at the improvement in my ball striking. I hope it continues, but I love it when a new idea works from the first ball. Some instructors say do this or that drill for 1000 reps and you'll get the hang of it. Never seems right to me. Keep up the great work you guys do.

The artist who drew those images didn't coordinate with Hogan on how to draw it exactly. So all the positions should not be taken as gospel.

Serious question….why after years of golf (and struggling) have I never seen or heard this before?! Setting up with my lead elbow pointed target-ish rather than tucked into my ribs was a night and day difference for getting my club working up the plane better and eliminating the need for a bunch of band-aid fixes I’d previously tried applying. Kind of mind blowing that a simple setup tip took years to discover then nearly instantly fixed a plethora of issues for me. Thanks AMG!

Should there be a soft bend in the lead arm or should it be pretty locked out? For some reason I lock out my lead arm like crazy at address, it's actually hyper-extended beyond 180 degrees. And perhaps this is subjective, but should you feel a lot of tension in the arms or have them fairly relaxed?

I sawed off the end of club so I have a grip +6", constantly working on everything at my desk! From this video I realized, I have some posterior pelvic tilt, which makes my left arm not want to come over to the club, rotate so easy, which is making it impossible to swing in balance so... extremely helpful gentlemen! Glad you got the pod back on, excited for Manzella!

Most definitely something so important that gets overlooked or rarely discussed. I read both of Hogan's instruction books, tried and tried and came to the conclusion I'd rather just read his biography, lol! Fastest hands in golf, at least at that time.

Great Vid again gentlemen. re: the Hogan book - I believe that image has been mis interpreted, I know I did it! If you look closely at the left arm, the pit of the elbow is actually facing towards the trail arm; the shading is just giving it the illusion that it is facing forward. I know in Dr. Kwan vids, when he is swinging the kettle bell, he has both elbow pits showing forward, but that is because he is using it to demonstrate the walking motion as you swing the KB. Sorry if I nerd out a bit, but I am working with a pelvic floor physical therapist, and starting at the hips with the correct movement, all of the muscles that connect the upper body and lower body work correctly but not with those elbow pinning ideas. Last week, after practicing the “lag and shaft lean” course, and after a breakthrough in my PT I felt my hips moving correctly for the first time in 50 years😂. Crazy how much less I feel it in my lower back and how the swing smooths out if you really break it down in a practice session (most without balls!). Thx for being so generous with your content!

This is a great topic and gets short attention or conflicting advice from other instructors. I have struggled with this forever, and I'm a decent player around scratch. I like the internally rotated lead arm concept but it's been easy to do it by pushing hands forward (forward press) which causes all sorts of problems (mostly inside) on takeaway. So, I've done the reverse too (Hogan elbow pits up) with even worse results. Maybe hand position would be worth discussing along with the arm position at some point.
@AthleticMotionGolf10 күн бұрын
It sure is worth discussing! Have the grip point somewhere between your belt buckle and first belt - pretty mid-body 👍

How does this adapt to different grips? Is this orientation relatively universal across different grips and release patterns across the pros in general? Pretty subtle changes in initial arm rotation at address? Do you try to bias the lead arm orientation based on release type at all? Referencing the hack motion stuff it seems like a Type A would benefit from a more internal lead arm at address, and Type B more externally rotated at address. Or do you just let it settle as naturally as you can without biasing for any sort of match-up/pattern?
@AthleticMotionGolf10 күн бұрын
Grip type and release type (and Hackmotion numbers) have to with below the elbow rotation. The movements above the elbow, which is what we're talking about here, are pretty universal.
@mp-illustration10 күн бұрын
@@AthleticMotionGolf Sorry, I didn't really phrase it all that well. I was trying to refer to biasing the upper lead arm and elbow, separate of however the lower arm was situated radially, to meet the different pronation and supination needs of the two main release types HackMotion tends to categorize. I'm unsure of the actual names of the types outside of Option A and B. So, if you saw a player falling into a traditional, primarily external, release pattern would you ever bias the upper arm/elbow rotated more internally at address to make it easier for the player to meet the needs of the lower arm and upper body. And vice versa, keep it from getting too internal at set up for player using a pattern such as DJ. I know Scott Cowx did a small talk on this and was curious if it was something you adjusted for, found particularly meaningful at all, or saw show up in gears data as a correlation.

I've always liked that feeling of resting my left arm on top of the left pec. I still let my arm hang naturally without tension or a sense that it must be "connected", but if it gets too far off to the left side of my body I start having major problems. I can't turn or flow properly because I'm fighting to get that club to bottom out in the right spot.
@AthleticMotionGolf10 күн бұрын
Love how you described that - couldn’t agree more 👊

When you look at video of Hogan he didn't set up anything like that image. More of a home plate look with soft arms. I went down that rabbit hole. Couple that with the trend of no leg movement and I was in a world of pain.
@AthleticMotionGolf10 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, you weren't the only one who went down that rabbit hole. So often there's a big gap between what golfers say, think, feel, believe they do versus what they actually do 🙃

@@AthleticMotionGolf that book was my bible when I was a kid, and it ruined me. It started with a right foot that was turned in 90⁰ to the target line instead of being turned out a little like the left foot, from where I tried to keep the right knee absolutely rigid. From this position where I had no hip rotation or right hip depth at all (I have a video of a 16 year old me where it looks like my lower body was in cement), I'd try my hardest to lead with the hips as Hogan showed in the book, and to get that right elbow leading the way in that 'classic' Hogan look from the pictures. Needless to say the results weren't good... I have literally only just started to undo all that in the last year or so. My whole golfing career was based around poor information that was considered gospel, and my ball striking was absolutely the worst of any of my peers (I was a teaching pro for 20 years). It wouldn't even be so bad if I didn't practice so hard trying to emulate the mentality of my hero, practicing until my hands bled. The best of it is that Hogan didn't even do himself what he was telling everyone else to do, and we all followed blindly because our golfing god told us to. Not that I'm bitter about it at all 😂
@AthleticMotionGolf10 күн бұрын
@ what I wouldn’t give to have the years wasted engraining things great players said they did but never did. What an advantage the next generation will have with the option to only work on what great players actually do! I share your non-bitterness too 😂
