Original NBC Broadcast with Curt Gowdy, Monte Moore, and Tony Kubek
was recently restored and Digitalized off some pre recorded DVDs I've had since the late 90s and is missing some of the Top of the 3rd and most of the Top of 5th inning the footage has been lost and/or wasn't recored some color correction and a new audio added in post. Unfortunately these few games (4-5) are the only games that are out there that were saved/recorded.(after countless searches, only a shitty version of game 2 is out there (with the wrong or original aspect ratio was altered)
Game 5 has the Reds down 3 games to 1 as the starting pitchers for game 5 are Jim McGlothlin for Cincinnati and Jim Hunter for Oakland as a lead off HR from Pete Rose on the first pitch of the ballgame has the Reds out in front early but the A's come back quickly in the home 2nd inning as Gene Tenace hits his 4th Home Run of the series. But the Reds clip away scoring a pair runs in the 4th and 5th innings while taking Hunter out of the game in the 5th. McGlothin only lasts 3 innings and replaced by Pedro Borbon, Tom Hall as Oakland seems to be in control at this point of the game until the Reds 8th inning as Bobby Tolan continues his clutch hitting knocking Joe Morgan in from 2nd tying the game as Ross Grimsley comes into the game in the 8th inning (replacing Clay Carroll) and takes away any threat the A's had in the inning. In the Reds 9th a throwing error from A's reliever Rollie Fingers proved costly as the Reds score the winning run on a Pete Rose single to center (scoring Cesar Geromino) as Jack Billingham comes in the 9th inning and earns his first save of the series.

Actual game 7 starter pitching in relief in game 5. Jack had back to back 19 win seasons in 73 and 74, and Sparky would yank him early so he couldn’t get his 20th win. Don’t know what Sparky had against him. I guess he went against Captain Hook’s micromanagement of pitchers. The reality is Johnny Bench was the true pitching coach in those years. He got the best out of guys like Nolan, Billingham, Gullett, Carroll, Norman, Kirby, etc. can you imagine the 75-76 Reds but with the pitching staff from the 1990 team? They would have won 120 games!

It was played on Friday because game three was rained out and the series was pushed back one day. It was an afternoon game because game 6 was scheduled for a 1PM ET start and if it had been a night game teams would have flown out leaving about midnight or so AND they would have gained three hours probably getting into Cincinnati around 6 or 7 AM. Not exactly conducive to getting a peak performance in the World Series. I’m not sure if the CBA back then prevented this but today you can’t play a day game after a night game if you cross so many time zones.

I was too young to watch 1968, but from what I've seen and read it was a good one. 1971 was a good one too, that was the first one I watched. I attended a game in each of the A's series, all were great, but I'd rank 72 just a little above 73 for drama, 74 was right there too even though it only went 5 games

@@Muddyrich I like the 1973 series because of Tom Seaver, big fan of him. I was a Braves fan from day one when they moved to Atlanta. Seaver was signed by the Braves but the usual 1960's-70's Braves bad luck his signing was ruled against Braves so all teams bid on Seaver & Mets signed him. I was not a Mets fan, pulled for Oakland in 72,73, & 74 series.

Curt Gowdy was such a coastal partisan. Back in the day I couldn’t stand him. Now today I hear him and he’s better than 99% of the talking heads doing sports. But his bias always showed. Hey the Reds hometown announcers showed it too but a national broadcast should at least acknowledge that the clean-shaven guys from Cincinnati were pretty good. After the Reds swept the Yankees in 76, all Gowdy could say was it was too bad the Yankees weren’t up to game. Yeah they were shut down by one of the greatest teams ever, and one of the best scouting operations ever. They didn’t have a chance.
