+DoubleBubble28 Early LCD monitors sucked compared to high quality CRTs. Carmack had a 1600x1200 CRT in 1997. LCD has fixed pixels, a CRT just had to be made with a good electron gun, phosphor screen and high dot pitch to support a high resolution.

yeah, i had that first one. i consider it by far and away the worst gpu i've ever owned. overpriced as fuck, outdated at launch (this shit wouldn't run battlefield 2 when a radeon 8500, a card from the previous gen, would) and got steamrolled so hard by every one of ATI's 9xxx series it's not even funny. my brother's 9500pro he bought 6 months later was about half as expensive and twice as fast in most demanding games. my fucking 4800ti was only faster in outdated dx7 games. FUCK THAT CARD. the only nvidia 4000 series card worth the money was the 4200ti

You should give the last generation direct x 9 cards a go as well. (On the higher end side ofc not something like the last 512 mb graphics card video :P) GTX 7900 if you can find one along with ATI X1950 pro or GTX 7800 & X1900 from ATI (be wary of one thing though, the ram chips on ati cards of this era (early gddr3 or 4 i believe ?) doesn't like heat too much so make sure to either put on heatsinks on exposed ones or aim a fan at the card.) if you can find one with a third party cooler it probably has enough cooling on the vrm's & memory while the reference doesnt have the best cooling on that part. Got a gtx 7800 256 mb here myself & keeping it ofc heh its a nice reference card from a sort of forgotten era of cards on an api that was well used at that point. But no decent powersupply to make use of it in other then my main rig. Id love to pair it up with the asus p5vdc-x motherboard + pentium 4 660 + 1 gb ram i got here for 3dmark 03 to 06 benchmarking. (Currently a radeon 2400 pro with a slow fan on it. (Stock one was super loud for no reason & with this slow fan it keeps itself at 39c no matter what load i put on it & no matter how long heh.) Runs passively up to 71c when i tested without the fan but the cpu cooler is louder then the card itself so might as well cool it down.

Despite this card was the fastest in 2004, sadly it's not able to run a PC game came out just 4 years later (indeed, 26 fps everything low is not even close to be playable) ... but nowdays with a medium card of 2012 like the GTX660 you can play a game like BF1 with everything betweem low and medium at 50-55 fps. Am I the only one who thinks this is actually amazing?

It also can't run anything built on Unreal Engine 3 since the card doesn't support SM3.0. The past 10 years was pretty convenient for PC gaming. A once high-end PC like something with an i7-870, GTX580 and 8GB RAM is still able to run modern games to some degree. Before that 5 years and your PC was absolutely obsolete trash. Just imagine a Pentium MMX 233MHz, 64MB RAM and a Matrox Millennium 2 backed by a Voodoo, both 4MB around 2001. Or a 1.5GHz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM and a 64MB Geforce2 GTS in 2006.

@Trainboy1EJR
@Trainboy1EJR 7 жыл бұрын
10lb bag of oatmeal is $7.50 depending on how much you can force yourself to eat every day, it will last 1-2 weeks. And trust me, you will have to force yourself to eat that plain! Add a tea spoon of pure cane sugar to each bowl if you want to survive. 1lb sugar lasts about a month. You will also need a 1-a-day multi vitamin if you want to live. So yes, $7.50 for a week of "groceries" is possible. But not sustainable past 2 months unless you are morbidly obese.

I remember that Doom 3 was demonstrated with the R300 before it released, so the statement that it was optimized for NV was probably as wrong as claiming it's hard to find drivers for the X800. Then again, Far Cry also ran better on ATI cards until Nvidia pressured Crytek to patch it so it'll run worse.

My two greatest pc investments in the years gone by, the card in the video and the GTX 1080. The X800 XT did somehow end up with corrupted memory and started failing shortly after WoW´s release, got a new one that ended up with artifacts without any overclocking. The third AMD replacement card then lasted for about 4 years, played WoW mostly during that time so didn´t actually need such an expensive card in the first place.

I remember getting my X800GTO2 for $150 and slapping an aftermarket cooler on it and BIOS flashing it to an X850XT-PE. Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego bought used(later a 4400+ Toledo) both overclocked to 2.4Ghz, Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, 2 x 1GB Corsair XMS DDR-400. All on Windows XP Pro. It actually multitasked great as applications were a lot more memory conscious back then and 2-4GB was considered a gaming/poweruser amount still. It was a good time to be a PC gamer on a budget. Modern resolutions have made games much harder to play well for the budget builder. Half Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry, Battlefield 2, Rome Total War, etc all ran great. Those were the days. I miss the old "Next-Gen Shooter" golden era when pixel shaders really hit their stride and games were still really ambitious. PC Gaming was magical and relatively pure and not bogged down with DRM and DLC like it is now.

This was my first "flagship" GPU I ever purchased and it sure could fly. UT2k4 on ultimate ran flawlessly (there was some tearing, but I didnt know about Vsync back then.) due to moving I had to leave everything behind and start from scratch. I purchased a computer with an athlon 64x2 2400 and NO GPU and it ran better than I could possibly imagine lol.

This was one beast of a card. Literally the flagship of all the GPUs back in the day. Used to play the original Painkiller game on max details. That and Jedi Academy/KOTOR1-2 on max. Those were the days xD

Nice video dude, you should do one more thing when testing old cards, some people play mostly mobas and those not so much hardware demanding games with high playerbase so you should test how card handles them aswell, maybe some of them could be cheap hidden gem for those situations. Cheers

I bought my x850 pro as the AGP model, because the pcie version had the extra shaders laser cut. A simple bios flash and the AGP version thinks it's the XT Platinum. Still works.

I had this exact card way back when. Mine died in 2009, right before I started raiding ICC in WoW. Was still running around 45fps coupled with a Pentium 4 2.8GHz and 1.75GBs of RAM.

Ati was considered by most industry rags to be the higher end of the GFX market back then. In fact when I got into building my own rigs about 2004, NV was seen more as the budget option. Also when Far Cry was released AMD Athlon 64 & X2 CPUs were the highest end CPU until Core2Duo.

The old PC i just pulled out for old school gaming goodness has an X800XT in it, non platinum. Never looked into why it would overheat back then, forgot that it did, clean installed XP, played some Soldier of Fortune 2 and it overheated shutting down my system. Protip: Clean your GPU fans/fins out every so often. They were completely covered up with accumulated dust. Cleaned it out, ran SoF2 just fine then...although temps were hitting about 70-71C for the 20 mins I played.

I did own the X800XT (non PE edition), on an Athlon64 3400+ and 2GB of RAM. I mostly played Warcraft 3, Doom 3 and Half Life 2 on that system, and performance was very good. Was my last AGP system though.

I hope you guys know, in 2004 no one play games at 1080p. 1024/768, 1280/1024 resolutions was most popular and 1600/1200 was something like 1440p/4k today. It means, performance was much better :)

I think it would be more appropriate to pair it with a Prescott Pentium 4 HT , since it came out in 2004, rather than a cpu from 2007 And i think that for 2004 the most accurate resolution to test would be 1024 x 768, to give a more accurate representation of what games in 2004 would actually play like
