The tension is rising between the two countries ever since the Scarborough Shoal standoff in 2012. China is claiming ownership over these waters based on their nine-dash line claim but the Philippines has a historical and legal basis for claiming sovereignty over the West Philippines Sea. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas or UNCLOS recognizes the Philippines' exclusive economic zone and refutes the claim of China as it has no legal basis in international law.
