My uncle passed away a few years ago. We live in ohio and he lived in downtown atlanta for 20 years. He would always rave about the people there and how nice everyone was and the food that he got compared to anywhere else. I grew up in Dekalb Co. in the 60s and 70s. Atlanta was 1/4 the size it is now. Dude, you would have to drive for days to see the whole Metro area. The 13 county Metro area is now about 100 miles in diameter. Traffic sucks everywhere. 6.5 million people and cars everywhere. I think a lot of the people you talked too aren't really familiar with the history. The Ponce City Market you went to on Ponce was originally the Sears Roebuck bldg. The perimeter you rode on really was in the late 60s but is an inner city racetrack now. My uncle (God rest his soul) was an Air Force fighter pilot and he refused to drive through ATL. What does that tell you lol.

@@Jrhynie I think you really have to live in both places, Atlanta and Athens, to get the feel of how they are so different. I love Atlanta but Athens is a special place. Once you get immersed in the music and restaurant scenes of Athens it’s magnificent. I lived there as a student and so it was a unique time in my life, a magical time. You could go to a big concert in Atlanta a pay a ton of money or go see the same performer in Athens the next night and might even get to meet them! And everything is 75% less expensive in Athens. I’m not sure either city is a fantastic tourist destination but both are home to me. I’ve only ever driven through Pennsylvania on my way to New York, never stopped to check it out. Maybe one day.
@Jrhynie

@@ATLbench Yes I said something similar to my girlfriend. I wouldn't recommend either as a tourist destination. You need to be at college kid or music head for Athens. I was the latter. Historical places like Valley Forge and ultra quaint Lancaster County is more our pace as we are not kids anymore.

The crime rate in Atlanta really spiked during Covid-19. Atlanta was always known for extremely reasonable housing for a big city, but housing prices have skyrocketed even more than elsewhere because of investors buying up housing stock.

Im so glad you did another Atlanta episode showcasing the city that I live in and love! most people don't understand how beautiful the city of Atlanta is until their feet is on the ground here because they've never visited our neighborhoods with independently owned businesses and entrepreneurs. Crime is a bit of a problem but I think your mindset and surrounding yourself with likeminded people can keep you around good energy.

The area at the beginning of the video is Bonfire ATL, theres a new indoor skatepark/community center right next to it called the "village skatepark". Its a really cool project.

You need to come to the suburbs right outside Atlanta (but still technically part of Atlanta). Dunwoody, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth. It's more expensive but thats where a lot of people live as well, and you won't get the full picture without visiting there as well 👍

My parents live north of Atlanta. Always go into ATL for food etc. Next time you're in ATL and you want some good Cuban food, look up Papi's Cuban & Caribbean Grill on Ponce De Leon Ave. Great food. Only thing I hate about Atlanta is the traffic. Don't get stuck in rush hour going to the airport! (Shoulda ended that video right there @22:56, the beginning scene from Walking Dead).

I choose “Gentrification” over the historically high crime rates prior to development. Anyone familiar with the Atlanta area knows what some of these neighborhoods used to look like, and how dangerous they were for everyone, regardless of your race (violence, armed robbery, burglary). Slapping the word gentrification around in some of these scenarios is very misleading. These places were UNINHABITABLE - literally bandos… completely dilapidated
@feralLove

And how is it that these houses became dilapidated?
