Personally that smile that Darius had felt more like a mix of happiness and relief that it was not all a dream and light panic because he just realised that he stole some random car. Throughout this episode he keeps meeting people that are likely dead while in his dreams, the girl that "used to be too wild" (hints at her death, she probably also died after getting pulled over by the cops, i also felt sadness in how he said "it was good to see you") and his brother (and by extension his family, him asking his brother how his parents are and his brother not responding broke my heart). He uses dreams and things like his dep-sesh to talk to the people he can't connect with anymore, he uses this as his way of escapism so much that he has to check if what he sees is real. Having it end with him realising that the people that he cares about right now are alive and real would be my "romantic" ending for this. In the end we got some type of closure for everyone in the main cast and I love that it ended with them having a typical crazy experience in Atlanta. I love that Donald Glover used the typical "it was all a dream" trope in this way because otherwise it would be the worst way to end a story. He doesn't tell us if its a dream in the end because honestly (imo) it doesn't matter if it is. Its up to personal interpretation which is what I find great especially in a show like Atlanta where you can find a lot of hidden meanings if you try to look for them.

yooo this makes the episode even deeper that Darius uses the tank to talk to the dead and is happy to know these friends are alive and with him in the present, hence the smile at the end

his brother saying to him “i don’t want you in here. i want you out there. have fun…go see your people.” drives your point of him using the deprivation tank to talk to the people that’s no longer there with him and as a form of escapism home. it’s like his brother was telling him i’m good and i’m at peace. go live your life and appreciate the people that’s still here in flesh that loves you. i also wanna add after sitting with the episode i think darius is the living embodiment of us the viewers (the ones who stuck around to the very last season to be exact). we go into each episode not knowing what to expect but we’re ready for whatever happens and willing to see where it takes us and that’s how darius is all throughout the series and why it makes sense for him to be the focal point for the series finale.
@oranjmix2 жыл бұрын
@@cmprse for sure! that was really telling. going on your point, i think they touching on audience members who have lost ppl these last few years. "the sickness" even. like Darius has been dealing in his own way throughout the years and now his brother or even his subconscious is telling him it's cool to face the world and enjoy the company of the living . i like how it was mentioned in this video that this series finale is a goodbye in many senses. even the ride of into the sunset bit. they even gave us a post sunset ride scene for bonus haha.
@zakki94912 жыл бұрын
@@cmprse this also fits the last 2 seasons themes of death, which would otherwise be missing. This episode we finally get to a point where a character is appreciating life after being at peace with death (while Darius does miss his old people, he does recognize that he needs to get back, its usually the other character in the scene that insist on him staying a bit longer).

That scene with Darius in the house visiting his brother really got me. The dialogue was realistic and simple, the acting warm, comfortable and uncomfortable. Filmed beautifully, when it went from Darius asking his brother, to silence. Lakieth killed it, was a really beautiful scene.

I found something deep in how Darius was upside down in the tank, a.k.a facing the "other-side", when communicating with his brother. And the dep tank attending saying he never seen anyone do that before.

Stories like this always get to me. I sometimes have dreams where I keep waking up still in the dream, over and over, like a hundred times. You can't remember what real life was like, and you can't escape the dream. Your mind is shattered by the time you actually wake up. The day is totally ruined.

I've had my fair share of those types of dreams as well. The worst is when i dream an entire day, then wake up in the real world a day behind. Absolutely destroys the rest of my real world day. Thanks for commenting.

@@Syntell Glad to know this happens to other people. When I was a kid, I had some of those dreams seem to last for several years. There were so many call backs to previous characters and themes from previous seasons. The restaurant owner had a bow tie and was offering blowfish like Ahmad White with the bow tie from season one offering Earn the Nutella sandwich. Darius going in and out of the deprivation tank was a call back to previous episodes this season like Earn crawling through the boxed shape tunnel to fake D’Angelo or Earn and Vanessa in the dark wet carpeted space to leave Lenox Square and ending up at the Dead rapper’s wake. I think that dead rapper was meant to represent Paperboi. Also the hat that Darius is wearing is similar to the Goofy hats from episode 8 of season 3 and this season from “The goof who sat by the door” episode. I Think Darius has been dying all along and these episodes from the show are memories of his friends lives in the time that he knew them. I even think back to episode two of season 3 when Vanessa and Darius attend “Fake Tupac’s?” Death ceremony, the similarities between Darius and the man that was covered in wraps were eerie. Also I’ve long concluded that Earn was dead all along as well. The ending of season 3 with Earn finally finding his luggage but it turning out to be the white Earn who was the literal ghost of season 3. White Earn oddly enough shares the same family dynamic and tragic ending as Thomas Washington. As I also believe, Mr Washington is a representation of Earn and Lottie was supposed to be like Mr Washington’s son retelling his father’s mental collapse. Dealing with death and moving on has been a recurring theme since season 3 and partly season 2 as well. I think this last episode of this brilliant series is our way of dealing with the death of these characters we love dearly and being ok with moving on.

A great episode and says alot about the context of what happened. Like Mr Robot, theres going to be alot to breakdown and will require mulitple viewings. Darius is most likely dying as he deals with his regrets and acceptance or hes in control of a simulation. Well never know if Judge Judy was thick, its up to interpretation. I wasn't even thinking of the movie references you thought of in regards to the dream theory. The movie references I was thinking of based on what I had seen that have that dream duality are Altered States and the ending of the movie Brazil. Asians have been eating blowfish sushi for centuries with the value of it being done professionally. I would try it knowing that the timing of eating it is key. Here in America it's banned with the only exception of the owner having a bonafide license. The part with the car really gave it that joyous feeling of the show ending with all of them racing into the sunset. The Darius smile at the end felt like it was meant for us as the viewers to think we're on the door mat of dream and reality free to walk back in this Atlanta dimension any time.
