Excellent video and narration. I have zero interest in actually sailing on my own, but love to watch these videos and live precariously through the adventurers. While we’ve been on some rough roads and encountered interesting weather, we are always on solid ground…

That was over way too quick! Subscribed. Just the kind of information I was looking for without the drama. Who did you insure with?
@theoddvoyage18 күн бұрын
The insurance aspect is almost worth a very brief video by itself! If only I understood it. This is only going to be relevant for UK-registered vessels. But long story short, I ended up with a broker at topsailinsurance.com who did all the legwork, and they ultimately arranged most of the legs for me with admiralyacht.com. I guess I could have contacted Admiral directly, knowing this, but there was a huge advantage in having that named person at Topsail who was aware of the whole plan and helped chop and change things as we went. As I understand it, a lot of website requests we all fill in end just up with the same very limited set of underwriters who probably get tired of saying no, so having a human on the inside who knows the system seems well worth the admin fee they charge. I should have mentioned it in this video, but it would have been good to start the hunt 6 months before departure, to avoid the rising sense of panic.

Brilliant video. Very informative. Thank you. When stopping briefly in Portugal were you required to clear in and out or could you claim you were "in transit", thus avoiding the formalities?
@theoddvoyageАй бұрын
@JJ-sq9sy We wanted to be tourists, so we cleared in. I've also decided by now that you can't get too much paperwork in your hands, just in case, so I'd clear in. Some detail... - We cleared in at Vigo (just up from Baiona) and they seemed very surprised that we wanted to do such a thing. We tried for customs clearance too, but they just shrugged (with a smile). - We didn't clear out of Lisbon, because we were heading straight to the Canaries. But in retrospect I would have cleared out of Lisbon, as there was a small chance we would stop in Morocco. And that would have been a problem without paperwork. - We cleared out of Fuerteventura, but again struggled to find anyone interested in doing a customs clearance. Maybe a language barrier for me too. This was a bit of a disaster in Antigua, who then asked me to write an essay about our voyage and frowned at me for three hours until they let us in. - We cleared out of Barbuda instead of Antigua, which was swift and easy, and the paperwork from there and everywhere else (including Portuguese Azores) was also efficient and complete. - I phoned the UK authorities on our return (having submitted their online forms beforehand) and they seemed most relaxed about our arrival.
@JJ-sq9syАй бұрын
@@theoddvoyage Oh many thanks for such a swift reply. I'm always complaining about the problems presented to Yachtsmen due to Brexit. Would have been a pain to clear in and out for a 24-48 hr stop-over. Does not clearing out of one country present problems when trying to clear in to the next country on the visitation list?
@theoddvoyageАй бұрын
For a short stopover, clearance sure would have been a pain. I think clearing out of Portugal before clearing back into the Canary Islands would have been legit to save some Schengen days, if I was saving them up. But I felt lazy, and didn't want the hassle of clearing in again somewhere in Lanzarote.

Well done! I bought a new boat and now I prepare for things to go wrong. Electricity was also my biggest concern. We have pretty big tanks, but I wish I had a little bit more solar. Despite the Mediterranean sun, it’s not enough to keep up and we are obligated to run the generator which we had to run anyway, because I underestimated how hot it was in the Mediterranean and it was a sauna bath inside the cabin.

You make it like if it was something normal out of the ordinary 😀which clearly it's not... I'm taking the steps to follow similar journey but, I feel overwhelmed with the amount of things you need to consider and the preparation itself. This was definitely a great video and, gave me a bit more insights on what to expect. Again... for sure there are much more to add and this was just an VERY high level overview of what you experienced through the entire journey. Nevertheless... quite insightful. Thanks
@theoddvoyageАй бұрын
@pedroredondo3713 oh yes, for sure the scale of it is overwhelming because it's such a surreal thing to do. But the ocean seems full of ordinary people on ordinary boats, just taking it one day at a time until they get there. Good luck!
@B_RupheАй бұрын
Apologies, ignoramus here, but what would it be like just to push ahead (east) through those early winter months? Seas too rough, wrong currents, winds too strong / weak?
@theoddvoyageАй бұрын
@B_Ruphe It's a great question. I think at the heart of it, winter weather in the northern part of the North Atlantic just can be severe - so there's a greater probability of high winds and therefore also rough seas. And there's less daylight. But to counter that, once you get later into the summer, the hurricane season further south can also spin off remnants that affect the north. For example, "Ernesto" hit Bermuda in August this year as a Category 1 hurricane. So if you want to play the odds, it does seem best to sneak across in between winter and mid-summer. Our end-of-April crossing here is maybe a little early. I see May & June are recommended. The whole thing is a dice roll though - you can never be sure what you'll actually get!
@B_RupheАй бұрын
@@theoddvoyage Thank you for the interesting explanation. If I ever had the courage to do it at all, I would be timing it for the quietest and safest season and route. The unpredictably of weather and sea at any time certainly must add an element of adventure/ scariness.

You forgot to mention the cost of the trip and where the money came from ??
@theoddvoyage17 күн бұрын
The cost is about the same as keeping a boat in your home marina, and sailing it a couple of weeks every summer. But I guess add 30% for increased marina costs, increased insurance costs and accelerated wear and tear for offshore. We work for a living, so time spent away from work doing this instead is probably an additional cost - it took up something like 70 days at sea over two years
