A tip to improve the sound in this video and the engine room video, is to run a low-pass filter on the audio in post-production. If your software allows you to set the frequency, you can try a bit with the 120-150Hz area for cutoff.

When I was three, my family crossed the Atlantic on board a ship and we passed through a strong storm. One night my father, who had an iron stomach, as he liked to say, was the only passenger to show up in the dining room for dinner. This video has given me a good sense of how it must have been on that night so many years ago. Thanks!

We ran into a huge storm between Piraus and Dubrovnik once. I relieved my dad at the helm. He had been fighting the wheel back and forth as the waves pushed our bow. In my 10 years in the US Navy and multiple Atlantic crossings, we always had at least a day or two of weather like that. There's a reason the old sailing navies used hammocks. First of all, they don't take up as much space (and when each man is officially allocated eighteen inches between his hammock and the next one over, that's a big deal), but second of all, you don't fall out of them as easily as a cot when everything's rolling.

The mast oscillations are not good, I think the wings are contributing, the other masts without wings seem to move less. The rolling before the course change is a great demonstration of how the brace welds become crucial in keeping cargo from shifting, just a few poor welds would be catastrophic. But just in case, I think I would spend as little time on the yacht as possible, just enough to secure things, and then remain in the superstructure.

Not sure on exactly how the radar mast is attached, or how strong it is in an Atlantic storm but in an earlier video ( and you might have seen it) where AWOL was in the shed for off-season storage and upkeep in Italy it was explained the radar mast was 'redesigned' so it was easier to remove and disconnect / reconnect the various cables that run to the equipment. So the boat can pass under some bridges which it otherwise wouldn't clear. Before that it was a much bigger job apparently. Might not have been practical to remove / reinstall for the ferry crossing, or risk considered low. Anyway I agree it looks pretty shaky.

@@stuartread135 agreed Stuart, but that Is critical hardware on that boat and can be easily damaged and not seen until a situation occurs. Just an observation from bilge crew!

Question for you: you mentioned that you checked the tie downs (always a good idea), but I'd have to imagine that the Yacht Express is ultimately responsible for those, right?

Yes, as the Yacht Express is responsible for the safety of its cargo in this case the yachts on board. But, Tristan is also there. He is the captain of the AWOL. A captains job never sleeps. Does not matter that the boat is out of water. Tristan as that ships captain is responsible for that vessel. Sure it is the responsibility of the carrier but also Tristan has a responsibility too. He must make sure his vessel is safe at all times..... Remember the three rules of a captain. 1. Crew/passenger safety. 2. Vessel safety and 3. environment safety.... If I am wrong. I stand to be corrected but pretty sure am not.

Back in 1992 we were on a Caribbean cruise and because we were late getting out of port, the Captain put the pedal to the metal into a strong headwind. The next morning about half the passengers missed breakfast. We dubbed the main party room the hurl room because if you fixated on the horizon you would hurl!! 🤮

Yeah, good storm, I can't imagine why the company didn't install stabilizers since they cross the Atlantic regularly. Many years ago I went from England to Canada in a 26K freighter, we hit a storm off the Irish coast, the Inclinometer on the bridge was showing 30 degree roll. I kept my food down! Have a safe trip.

I'm sure that you are aware of the Disaster of El Faro. The Captain felt tremendous pressure to avoid delays and decided to "Tickle the Dragon's Tail" and sail really close to a massive hurricane. He relied on weather reports that were changing by the minute. The latest said that the hurricane had changed course and was headed straight to his ship. Although we have the black box from the bridge, I can't even imagine how bad that last night must have been. The disaster was so unusual that several books have been written about it, in the 21st Century, large container vessels are supposed to have plenty of data to keep them from heading straight into hurricanes.
