Can we just take a moment to appreciate all the background characters in this film? Aside from the gas-masked soldiers, a lot of these guys look well designed and seem to have their own personality, so for me it feels a little extra tragic when they’re all inevitably killed

What is truly terrifying is the absolute necessity of that action/decision in a sub taking on water. Your better instincts are screaming to give every last crewman a chance, but the reality is even a seconds' delay could spell the end for all aboard. And 'the end' is even more terrifying, particularly in modern, very-deep-sea subs. The physics of 'crush depth' in deep water are mind-warping.

0:35 never realized that mistake. she says that they are taking water, if cold sea water touches something as hot as the boilers it will explode and break the ship in half, or in this case the submarine. but there is one problem... steam boilers need to vent large amounts of smoke. how are they venting smoke without the water pouring into the boilers? at a depth of what it looks like 500 meters? they could have just said that she was worried about water reaching the batteries. this movie takes place in 1914, at that time the Germans had Uboats that where powered by batteries when traveling underwater and if seawater came in contact they would produce this deadly acid gas, they could have said that instead of the boiler line lol

@@LvL_99_Red_Chocobo diesel engines would experience the same problem of requiring oxygen and having to dump combustion products. Diesel-subs are running their engines when they are not submerged. While submerged they are using power stored in accumulators which was generated by diesel engines while sub was not submerged.

It’s standard procedure on almost all ships sadly, you basically have two options, close the hatch and save that portion of the ship hopefully, or try to squeeze one more in and the water gets through, at that point it’ll just repeat until either the ship sinks or someone’s closes the hatch, That’s why it’s a solid steel door with a wheel.
