Atlantis VS ZPM Hive

After a miraculous Wormhole Drive trip, Atlantis reaches Earth just in time to battle against a ZPM powered Hive Ship in order to protect the Earth. Even though Atlantis is quite drained because of the Wormhole drive, it puts up a fight long enough for our heroes to finish the Hive. NOTE: I don't own Stargate Atlantis, SciFi channel or even have anything to do with it (other than being a fan). This is just for entertainment and all the credit goes to Stargate Atlantis and SciFi (btw thanks for cancelling it @$$holes).

In the official Legacy continuation series, it takes them some time to repair Atlantis and get it back to Pegasus. Mostly due to the IOA. It takes some shrewd work by Woolsey, Carter and O'Neill to force the IOA to send Atlantis back. The hyperdrive (which they repaired but the wormhole drive was beyond their ability to do anything with) failed along the way and drained most of Atlantis' remaining power. They had to land on a frozen planet on the edge of the Pegasus Galaxy with little power rather than Lantea as they intended. What they discover later is the planet they landed on is where the Wraith were created by the Ancients.

Three heavily drained ZPM modules, vs one fully operational one might put things into perspective. Beyond that, Atlantis was falling into orbit, an object of such considerable size striking the atmosphere of a planet would have taxed the shields considerably. It also takes power to fire drone weapons, with dome shields you're either being completely defensive, or offensive, nothing in-between (or so it seems).

In book 6 of the Legacy series Atlantis goes into battle again against a Wraith attack fleet made up of 5 hive ships and 8 cruisers. Its the fleet of the main enemy of the novels, Queen Death and they decide to fight rather than flee when the Genii warn them of the coming attack. It ends up being Atlantis, the George Hammond, a repaired Ancient ship called the Pride of the Genii and a small Wraith fleet loyal to Todd against Queen Death's fleet. Its an incredible battle with Sheppard, Beckett and even Jack O'Neill (briefly) piloting Atlantis. O'Neill ends up commanding Atlantis' fleet in battle too. They defeat the Wraith with Teyla killing Queen Death with her telepathic powers. During the battle, Sheppard is able to destroy a hive ship with 8 drones and precision aiming. During the battle Atlantis and Todd's Wraith fight side-by-side against the enemy. Zelenka even works together with a Wraith scientist at one point. Elizabeth Weir briefly returns to save McKay's life when he's about to die, having Ascended for real after we last saw her.

I see there has been quite an interesting discussion here about why Atlantis was so weak in battle. This is what I think: - In the first siege, Atlantis was taking fire from orbit and was also in the bottom of the ocean (making the attack from the hives weaker). In here the ZPMs were drained because of the wormhole drive, the star drive was also functioning, plus it was taking heavy fire at point-blank range from a juiced up Hive (TheDeludedFactor perfectly explained the ZPMed Hive strengths)

Many people critizise that in the flashback from Vegas, the Ancient Weapons Platform was able to shred the Hive to pieces, while here, Atlantis drones merely severed as a distraction. The answer to that is also pretty simple: In Vegas we see thousands of drones. Here, there are, at most, a few dozen. Dr. Beckett might be the number 2, but he's no Sheppard and no O'Neill. He's not able to fire hundreds, or even thousands of drones at the same time.

For those saying that the Atlantis crew knew there was a team on that hive ship that's true but they had no choice but to destroy it. It was about to destroy Earth. As for Atlantis, those energy blasts are incredibly powerful due to being powered by a ZPM. ALSO, the blasts were shoving Atlantis into Earth's atmosphere where the friction was causing the shield to drain even faster.

0:51 "Shields are down to 70%" This statement contradicts what I have heard in the show and read on Stargate wiki. According to Stargate wiki, the Atlantis Shield will have the same strength the entire time it is up, and it only collapses when its power supply is depleted. Now I don't think they ever said it, but I would guess at after the WH Drive being activated they had around 50% power remaining altogether. Now let me put this into perspective in the next comment.

In that case the stargate wiki is in desperate need of an update. While it is true that the Atlantis shield will usually drain it's power supply first, it can still be overstressed if you hit it with enough umpf. However these situations are quite rare, in fact we only know of one other situation beside this one and that was when the gate exploded (5.10 first contact). They did collapse the shield around the gate to absorb the explosion and while it almost worked the explosion actually burned through all the shield emitters faster than the shield could eat through its power supply leading to the only other known instance of the shield collapsing due to stress instead of a lack of power.

Assuming that the creators of Stargate were taking into account things such as inertia, size, and kinetic energy, the hive was massive, especially in comparison to a smaller vessel. Asgard shields suffer from bleed-through effects that Ancient shields, and Wraith hulls do not, which should account for the lack of shaking. This might be a stretch, but I'm also assuming that Atlantis had depleted its ZPM's when it activated the wormhole drive, since it required three, unlike the shield.

It easily took out 2 Asgardian ships and barely took any damage when Atlantis released all it's drones on it (which was shown as the minor shaking in Sheperards scene). Normally when a shield is hit with a powerful force like that it causes alot more shaking. Something else worth mentioning is that the ZPM Hive depleted a 3 ZPM powered shield in a barely anytime at all

Read the Legacy series. Its the show's official continuation. Man that series is great!!! Features Sheppard/Teyla romance as well as major hints of Sam/Jack. We learn the fates of Weir and Ford too. They finally resolve their conflict with the Wraith too. HELL of a final battle with a Wraith fleet led by their new main enemy Queen Death attacking Atlantis which flies into battle rather than flee into hyperspace protected by the George Hammond (the main Earth ship of the books), a repaired Ancient cruiser called the Pride of the Genii and a small Wraith fleet loyal to Todd. Jack O'Neill commands the Earth fleet and SG-1 comes to help too. Atlantis does a HELL of a job, seriously damaging two hive ships and destroying a third with its drones which Sheppard uses sparsely with precision aiming since this battle took most of Atlantis' drones. The battle ends with a Wraith defeat when Teyla kills Queen Death and they are able to form a tentative peace with the surviving Wraith factions. Elizabeth Weir appears briefly too: she seems to guide Teyla and McKay in parts of the series and then appears as an Ascended Being to save McKay's life. The final battle with the Wraith also takes place over the planet the Ancients originally created them on where Atlantis inadvertently landed after returning to Pegasus though they didn't know it at the time.

@wilkoman3: I think you're thinking of Project Arcturus, the Lanteans' ultimate power system. McKay and some other people have tried in three episodes to make a functioning version. Every time they've failed, once blowing up a star system, once almost destroying an alternate universe Atlantis, and once creating a weird matter bridge that was freezing the whole area around them. It's never worked right.

I forgot to mention that somewhere in the series they explain that Atlantis was not a war ship, meaning that it wasn't built to fight like this. Sure it can defend itself but I think thats about it hehe. I know why many might think all this to be bullshit, I mean we all (at least the majority lol) consider Atlantis to be like the biggest, coolest, and most powerful piece of technology the Ancients ever built. Come on, its a huge city that flies, has a kick-ass shield, and fire drones! It has to!

if you even watched the episode you would see that the ZPM buffed up the hive ship's regeneration to a point that it is on par with if not stronger than shields which means a nuke would not be able to penetrate it so Shepard came up with a plan to detonate a nuke after sneaking on board.

@SequelReviews the one thing that bothers me is that "The shield of Atlantis is unique in that nothing can penetrate the shield as long as there is enough power to sustain it (unlike starships, which deplete under external forces and slowly lose integrity no matter how much power is available)." That is taken from the stargate wiki which has proved to be rather reliable. So either the show messed up or the shields will still cause bleed through damage if the attack is strong enough.

There is a thing about Atlantis and ZPM modules in general: The shield emitters and the ZPM's both are limited by how much power they can consume in a given time. See it as a current of a river. With 3 ZPM's, you have three currents of the same speed, thus having three times the maximum amount of power arriving at the end. However, the shield emitters themselves have limits on how much power they can consume. So even with three ZPM's working in overdrive, you can pump only so much energy into the shield emitters. This can also be seen in the episode with those Pegasus Asgard when the Gate exploded: Atlantis collapsed the shield over the exploding Gate, but they couldn't sustain it for an unlimited amount of time, because they were "frying out the emitters". They still had power in the ZPM afterwards. So the same is going on here: The Hive's weapons are so powerful, that they are overloading the shields. It wouldn't matter how many ZPM's you're having to back those shields, the emitters are just overpowered. Skimming the planets atmosphere is not helping either.

The hive ships is powered up by probably more than 1 zpm. the Atlantis 10k years ago could withstand alot of hive assualts because they had the ability to make more zpms. the hive ships probably used zpms too when they fought the atlantians

Even with the power and expertise they would not risk using the wormhole drive. They would only use it if it was there last option. You also have to remember the last time they uses the wormhole drive they where extremely lucky . If there calculations where a fraction off they would have been vaporized.

You have to remember Atlantis used the majority of it's power on the wormhole drive. It's shields are pretty much absolute... sadly that was always the problem haha - not enough power. the Hive was pretty OP though haha

It always bugged me that Caldwell thought a single full-power shot from the Asgard Plasma Beam Weapons would damage the super hive. Even a regular hive took several hits before it went down. With that carapace this one wouldn't.

And a shield can fail, seen in the beginning when even though there is still power, sections of it can fail when put under severe strain or even low power. And they just ran a experimental wormhole drive which could have put a damper on power, needed for shields . And they are fighting wraith which probably have made weapons designed to directly counter it or put immense strain on said shield.

You can get it on Amazon. There's 8 books. There was originally supposed to only be 6 but they increased it to 8. There's some really good plotlines like McKay getting captured and turning into a Wraith. He's originally evil as a result but McKay's true personality eventually starts to reassert itself. The Hammond teams up with Todd to rescue him though Todd's ship sits the battle out mostly. The Hammond ends up going one on one against a single hive ship and actually does significant damage despite not having fully recovered from an earlier battle and with her Plasma Beam Weapons inoperable. Before the Hammond retreats when Wraith reinforcements arrive, its mentioned that the hive ship lost half its weapons arrays and took heavy damage. Part of the team gets rescued by Todd's ship which is able to beam them out after they set up an overload but McKay, Ronon and Keller are trapped aboard. Ronon is able to get them into an escape pod before the ship blows but they're left stranded in space. Luckily when McKay wakes up his human mind is back and he's able to land the pod on a nearby planet with a Stargate. Keller and Beckett are able to return him mostly to normal but he retains some Wraith characteristics including the same telepathic abilities as Teyla. Another great plotline is Teyla starts having dreams of one of the first Wraith Queens, Osprey. Its indicated an Ascended Weir may have been guiding her a bit there. Its later explained that Wraith Queens can sometimes access the memories of the first Queen they are descended from. Teyla has the blood of that Queen from the experiment that gave her her powers. Combined with a surprise discovery, the Atlantis team finally learns the true shocking origin of the Wraith. Well... maybe NOT so shocking given other similar things on the show but its still a big surprise. Explains a lot though.

Really??? You can buy them on Amazon.com. Anyway, the origin is that they were created by the damn Ancients!!! It was an experiment, one that the Ancients claimed was to immunize themselves against the Iratus Bug but what McKay thinks was aimed at another way of making themselves immortal. They were all originally humans who were experimented upon and there were 9 females and 99 males. One of the females and one of the males was actually from Athos, Teyla's homeworld. They eventually managed to escape and the Ancients began chasing them. In the beginning at least their war with the Ancients was all about revenge for what had been done to them.

can anyone explain to me how dialing the milky way alpha site with a pegasus galaxy DHD would work?...surely the pegasus galaxy DHD would have entirely different symbols/constellations on it? meaning there would be no way of figuring out the milky way address...also while on the hive there'd be no point of origin as the ship is moving and not in a constellation...

He said he will reprograme the d DHD for local adresses and(becouse in Stargate as a whole everyone somehow remembers perfectly all adresses) he probably remembered the alpha site adress on a Mikiway DHD and pressed the right symbols in the alpha site sequence and bam there you have it :)

its possible that when the ancients first created the gates they programmed each symbol to mean a specific location in each galaxy, therefor eliminating the need to have different symbols 4 each galaxy. it is also possible that they were advanced enough to figure out the points necessary to dial regardless of where they are

It’s possible the DHD was disabled or turned off since it seems like they have backwards compatibility also with Atlantis there too it could cause issues so maybe the DHD needed to be reprogrammed to override the gate on Atlantis

@LionelMessi1337 1st The ancients had more than three ZPMs when they were besieged. Remember the old Elizabeth? 2nd ZPM makes the hive to grow larger and it's hull thicker, making it more resilient and impossible to Asgard beam weapons to reach vital systems. Also, the hull regeneration rate is increased due the additional power and organic matter is different to shields. And 3rd It wasn't because of the politics. It was because the freakin' control chair was destroyed in the dart airraid!!

It's been a while, but I believe that the one that Camulus brought was tainted (tampered with) so thats why it could destroy the whole Solar System. Many ZPMs blew up when the Pegasus Replicators home planet was destroyed so that should have wiped out a huge area 😂.

That wrath ship took out 3 Daedalus class ships with Asgard weapons and shields.. 3 zpm vs 3 zpm and the wrath ship doesn't have shields and can put all their power into their weapons.

If they focused on a vulnerable point on the enemy hive they could have defeated it. Remember, hive ships are alive, and thus can be wounded much like any other living organism can. It's also difficult to tell how much strain was being placed on the ZPM, I have trouble believing it would have lasted very long. One ZPM can barely hold Atlantis's shields in place, in a prolonged fight, bye bye hive.

ok heres my take on how atlantis almost lost this battle: they were in space and moving which drained the ZPMS while also firing and taking atmospheric heat (several thousand degrees) If Atlantis was on an ocean they would have easy owned the crap out of the hive as they would only need power for the shield and not the stardrive.... plus why the f**k didnt earth send up some kind of assistance like nukes capable of space travel????

@bogdannazarie Actually wraiths had adapted some of ZPM technology to their' already when they where in war against the ancients. Remember the cloning facility? So it is not totally new for them. Also: As my fellow fan CaptHeckSparrow enlightens in this video's description, Atlantis' ZPM's are drained because of the wormhole trip. And what about replicator beam? It can't be THE most powerful beam weapon they can build because the energy would cause the wormhole to bounce in different stargate.

I believe the hive's gate took over first, effectively making the atlantis gate the equivalent of the alpha gate found in the arctic

In a much earlier episode an army of normal hive ships fired at Atlantis from orbit and Mckay calculate that the shield would hold for a few days (and that was with only 1 ZPM at the time) which is why it doesn't make sense that a ZPM hive depleted Atlantis' shields so fast when it had 3 ZPMs.

No. The hive got only 1 ZPM. It was said somewhere in the episode. But it was also said, that not enough of energy is the weak spot of Wraith technology. Even one ZPM is super power burst into system. Thanks to the energy that zpm was adding to the hive it could get faster, get stronger sensors,massively increase the firepower and get almost UNPENETRATABLE hull with almost imidiate regenaration. (That is why even the Asgard plazma beams - which were primary made by Asgrads to deplete Ori warship shields and penetrate anything - if there is enough energy to do so, or Ancient drones which were able to penetrate normal Wraith hive multiple times before finnaly exploding were unable to penetare the zpm powered hive.

it was a stupid explanation. This episode was pure bullshit in total. Yeah maybe the skin of the hive grown thicker but it's made of normal organic matter which can burn away. A ZMP can't made out a hive an indestructible 10km asteroid. And than that.. they could use the gate, why just send a nuke though? It was just bad writing because they cancel the show.
