Hello Everyone,
+This is Part 1 of a start-to-finish watercolor painting demonstration recorded in real-time. In this video, I cover intention, composition, values, and color - as well as interpretation, design, formatting, drawing, sketching, and perspective, etc.
+The scene depicts two of the most iconic scenes in all of New York City - the neo-Gothic St Patrick's Cathedral from around 1900, and the Art Deco masterpiece from 1937. It features the iconic bronze statue of the Greek Titan Atlas - struggling to hold up the heavens. And the focus of this painting is less about the actual objects than the negative space between - across which they are in constant dialog.
Thanks for watching!
Tom
+This painting was done on Baohong Watercolor Paper - rough surface - 300gsm :
+15x12 inches
+Pigments by Daniel Smith
+Brushes by Escoda and Neef
+Palette by House of Hoffman
+Sketch pencils by Blackwing and Faber-Castell
+Sketchbook by Stillman + Birn

I found this approach absolutely fascinating. The use of the pencil drawing giving so much implied detail in such a delicate manner. I must work on my drawing!!! Lovely and evocative painting.

Mr. Schaller, I am a beginner of watercolor painting, I fell in love with your painting as soon as I started. I know it is too ambitious to paint your style for the time being. I just want to tell you, you are very inspiring and your paintings make me happy by just looking at them. Thank you so much for uploading this new video. love from Monterey, CA.

I'm still amazed that you are so willing to share your paintings with us. The time that you spend on your value sketch, and especially going over your drawings (which are truly amazing) such an education for us. As you do the painting the amount of information you provide on each step is so appreciated. Thank you very much.

The older harsh gods in contrast to our more compassionate God. I have a lot of respect for your ability to sketch so well on rough paper. I dropped to hot press in order to sketch better. My sketching has improved and I'm moving to cold press. It was very worth it to get the textures in this painting. Thanks so much for sharing this journey.❤( My imagination noticed Atlas's legs were a more human color almost as if he was still in the process of turning to bronze.)😊❤

Most of what I know about Rand came from reading a book by bodybuilder Mike Mentzer - lol, but I did like her definition of art as a 'selective re-creation of reality'.

Bravo! Atlas reminds me of those images from space, like a nebula. The balance of the turquoise on his shoulder and the warm red of the person's coat is perfection.
