The left side arched opening is stark white, yet should be in shadow even darker than the shaded area as the interior is also in deep shadow. The fact you left it makes it stand out like a sore thumb. On a positive note: I totally enjoyed this painting and learned a lot about the way you did the sky and clouds. Thank you.

Yes - Mineral Violet is by Holbein. One reason I like it is because it is easily modified - Bere I used a bit of Neutral Tint to make it a bit more grey

Thanks very much for this tutorial. I was watching something this past Friday here… about 9 pm PDT…I was about to make a comment on your sky…as I try to practice a “sky a day”. I tried to post it, and all of a sudden..the tutorial was “ poof” gone. I’m assuming it was just meant for your patrons perhaps, and placed on general KZbin by accident. Skies can definitely be difficult for me.

@@thomaswschaller well I was fascinated with it …so I thought it was really good, ha! I like skies that are stormy ..so it’s hard for me to try to paint a cloud that’s a bit more crisp, if you know what I mean. It seems like we get heavy, gray, and sometimes green gray clouds that roll in from the Pacific with the wind …and get abutted by the Cascade mountains that we have in the Pacific Northwest….so, I’m more used to seeing them than the crisp ones as is here. Thanks again for a great tutorial.

when you put the shadows in your Artwork it just brings them to life, specially the mix or the pallette you use are extraordinary, I presume they are complementary colours and are very similar to Van Gogh's palette, it takes years to master your signature colours to bring the painting to life. I am learning and try as I may I invariably gravitate to matching the colours of the visual or any object and giving to much detail. in other words simply copying the image from photo to the paper, works out well but it does not give me satisfaction and makes me feel lack of creativity.
@thomaswschaller
@thomaswschaller 3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much - Yes - my shadows are almost always a study in complements. Here - Violets and Yellows - This helps to add a little electricity and energy more than simply flat grey tones would

Thomas, the thumbnail shows a lot more purple in the lower sky, and less of the brownish layer, than what we see in the video. I really like the purple, did you add that in later ?
