Atlas Throttle Lock Ultimate Slippage Fix

If you own an Atlas Throttle Lock or if you have researched an Atlas Throttle lock you know the most common complaint is after a short period of use it stops holding its position and slips. This can be infuriating after spend over a $100 on this throttle lock. Conceptually it is a great little device with push activated on and off to hold its position but in practice it falls short. After trying many different fixes to prevent it from slipping on the throttle switch gear a finally made a break through that has been working really well for me on both my KTM 390 Adventure and on my Yamaha Tenere 700. It sounds like I'm the odd bird here since mine has worked pretty well on my 390. I agree that it does not like to hold it perfect for long stretches, but as soon as there is any grade change or headwind change, it needs adjusting anyway. Like most, I mostly use it to give my hand a rest or do something with my right hand. I have the over-the-top model, and I have learned that after locking it on, I can lay my index finger over the top of the lock to grip the back side of it and keep a little pressure in the accelerate direction. I don't actually need to pull, so much as just sort of keep it in place. I'll drive for 5-10 minutes this way to rest my hand. It's nothing close to a real cruise control, but I am very happy to have it and would add it again in a heartbeat.

Mine worked great for the first few thousand miles. While in Baja the glue gave way on the pad. I had to rig up something to get it work sort of. You are fortunate yours is still working. When it works it's a great piece if kit.

I've had one of theses for years and was only able to get it to work on my KTM 390 adventure. And of course it slipped but worked good enough to rest my hand for just a few seconds. This is a good solution that I will try. Thanks Matt!

I am still fiddling with it on the 390 but it has worked great on the T7. Hope this works for you.

I had the friction pad slip off on seven mile bridge on the way to the Keys in Florida. I recently found the ideal way to not have Atlas issues. 😎 - Frank

What a great idea, I took my Throttle lock off my Tenere as it just slipped all the time no matter how I adjusted the pads, I will give this a try as I really like the push button system of the Atlas.

It might take a little fiddling to get it right but on my T7 it works great.

Brilliant idea. I got a chinese version of this a couple of years ago for my 390, I could never get it to hold properly and bought the expensive throttle lock that fits on the other end of the handle bar, which as it was actually for the 390 works. The only thing was getting used to rolling your pinky across it to get it to loc., If I don't use it for a long time (short rides) I forget how to do it easily. One of the things I liked about the atlas was the quick lock and release and I've already got some of the grip tape so I must dig out the Atlas copy and try this. Thanks for the tip.

I hope works for you. I have used those bar end throttle locks too. I always struggled with them.

I was actually checking around to see if anyone had an issue with the lock wobbling on their throttle tube. I have repeated the instructions to the letter and still having an issue. So I’ve yet to try it out on the road, but the grip tape is a solid idea. Maybe you might consider stippling the housing for grip without the tape.

Both of mine wobble on the throttle tube. The stippling could work too. It took some fiddling but I was able to get both of mine working reasonably well now.

@@advmatt Yup, considering the stamped steal design and trying to mount an eclipse to a cylinder, unless it’s very firmly mounted to a flange it only has 2 contact points. I’ve been in contact with Atlas over the wobble as well as fitting the device to a 2013 Triumph Scrambler which uses a 2 into 1 cable exit. Looks like my Hypermotard 1100s uses the same throttle tube housing. If I find a way to decrease the wobble I’ll let you know.

Thanks! I guess low grit sandpaper glued to the throttle housing or even electrical insulation tape could do the trick.

Mine never worked on either of my bikes. I am considering the Veridian cruise for the 390. It’s expensive, but I don’t plan on selling the 390 any time soon. I will try this on my Stratoliner, that switchgear is polished aluminum. No luck holding on that.

Bought mine bcse of good reviews but same as...took it out for a long ride tried to use the atlas but wasn't holding (due to vibrations etc) couldn't add a thicker pad bcse throttle was sticking.....upset bcse how much it costs in UK. Will try your idea thanks

I had a lot of frustration with these. My first one worked OK for awhile but required constant fiddling to get ot to hold. Hope this works for you.
