Well said! Also, I never paid attention to the fact that these Atma Bodha verses on contemplation were in the first person, let alone wonder why they were so. Now, thanks to Swamiji, I know.

"Make your mind perfectly quiet for...three, four, five seconds." Thank you! That, at least, I can do. Seems simple enough: (1) What I want removed - I am not my thoughts, etc. (2) Three seconds of stillness. (3) Reflect - I had no thoughts, but I was still there observing the quiet.

Swamiji, namaste! From my Heart I thank you both for the teaching and for the practical methods of applying the knowledge of Vedanta! The guru of the world Ramana Maharshi shared with all those who were seeking his direct gripping of the True Self, Atman, in these words. 881. All the benefit to be obtained by inner enquiry is only the destruction of the deceptive ‘I’-sense [the ego]. It would be too much to say that it is to attain Self, which always shines clear and ever-attained. 883. Will an ornament become gold only when its form is destroyed by melting? Is it not [in reality] gold even while it is in the form of an ornament? Therefore, know that all the three [unreal] entities [the world, soul and God] formed by the mind, are likewise [in reality] nothing but existence-consciousness [Self]. 885. Except by [the effort made through] the path of enquiring into the mysterious sense, [the ego], by whatever effort is made through other paths such as karma, it is impossible to attain and enjoy Self, the treasure shining in the heart. 887. If that unequalled state does not exist now but will come [into existence] only later, that state which will come cannot be our natural state, and hence it will not remain with us permanently but will [at some time] go away from us. 888. That [Brahman] is the whole [purnam]; this [the world-appearance] is also the whole. Even when [this] whole merges into [that] whole, it is the whole. Even when [this] whole goes out [as if a separate reality] from [that] whole, the whole alone remains. Michael James: Sri Bhagavan’s teaching is that the whole world is unreal as world but real as Brahman, the whole (purnam), just as the snake is unreal as a snake but real as the rope, its base. Therefore this verse should be understood in the following light: “That [the rope] is the rope; this [the seeming snake] is also the rope. Even when this snake merges [disappears] into that rope, it is the rope. Even when this snake goes out [as if a snake] from that rope, the rope alone remains.” In other words, just as in truth the rope alone exists, so in truth Brahman, the whole, alone exists; and just as the seeming snake is a false appearance, so the seeming world is a false appearance. Neither the going out (manifestation) of this world-appearance nor its merging again into Brahman is real. Brahman ever remains as the immutable and unchanging whole. (Guru Vachaka Kovai) OM TAT SAT ओम् तत् सत्

Thank you again for the precious teachings and guidance for contemplative practice! I only found one point which is not quite correct: The Buddhist term of shunyavada is definitely not the same as "nihilism", there are a lot of very clear teachings and commentaries of Buddhist masters on this subject. Vedanta itself is so brilliant, I think, it doesn't need to be compared to any other doctrine.

Repetitio mater studiorum - repetition is the mother of learning. [shrug] Also, mindfulness seems like a good way to put distance between you (sat-chit-ananda-atman) and the body-mind-sense complex, without the bother of samadhi, I guess it's called. 😊

Swamiji my humble pranam to you. A question that comes to mind all the time is...it is said that the body needs the atma to live while the atma is eternal. It seems to me that the devine atma Also needs the body until it leaves the body and return to the cosmos. Is this correct thinking? Dhanyavadha

Swami, regarding the stationary unchanging nature of consciousness. Im not fully convinced we must be completely stationary to observe change. When we are driving at the exact same speed as another car, yes it seems the are not moving. But you can still observe movement while moving, if the object being observed and the observer are going at different speeds, or in different directions. If im going 60mph and the person next to me is going 61mph they will look as though they are slowly moving forward when in reality they are moving 61mph and i am also moving, only slightly slower. How to make sense of this? Is consciousness truly unchanging and unmoving or could it be simply moving at a different speed? Edit: funny i forgot i already asked this a year ago

So we could've been hypnotised before or we can be hypnotize now - just a thought 😉 As for the Sun drishtanta - because we are assuming that we are going around the Sun we can assume that the Sun is not moving and only horizon is going up. But if we take the Earth as our relative point then Sun is actually moving down 😉 Everything depends on the point of view. Everything turns around the Sun just because we decided Sun is the center. If we decided Earth is the center everything would move around Earth just in more complexed orbits 😱😉
@monkeygod7503
@monkeygod7503 2 жыл бұрын
Swami isnt it true you can still observe a person driving past you if you are simply moving more slowly then they are moving? You don't necessarily need to be totally stationary. You can still tell the other person is driving past if they are going even a fraction of a mph faster than you. You can even observe the illusion of them moving backward if you are moving faster then they are when in reality you are both moving in the same direction just at different speeds. You don't necessarily need to be unmoving to observe movement. Is consciousness really unchanging or is it changing so incredibly slowly we cannot detect it?
