Hey guys, a follow up to this video. It's been two months and not once has it bogged down! This was the proper fix!

Kyle O'Glee, I think you just fixed my evo8, I’ve been having the same issue, but my bogging was a lot harder on my moster 185. I’ll be replacing all of my fuel line very soon👍

Kyle, I'm so happy you made this video. I had been struggling with full-throttle bog down since I got my Nitro 200. At first, I thought it was carb-related, and ended up cleaning it. Didn't seem to make much of a difference. I had also been noticing bubbles in my line... My neighbor is a small engine mechanic, and he thought it must be fuel delivery related. He recommended that I replace my fuel line (and go down from 1/4" to 3/16", to help increase the fuel pressure) and remove the in-line primer bulb. I did not bother removing the clunk line like you, but I was concerned it could be the culprit too... Turns out, it must have been the primer bulb sucking air, because now it runs great, and there are zero bubbles in the line. Since my fuel tank only has a single nipple for the fuel line and just a vented cap, I now have to prime the system by holding a piece of fuel line to the cap vent, and blow into the tank that way. Im sure I could add a permanent blow tube like you did, but I didn't feel like taking the tank off and doing that yet... Anyways, thank you again for the great videos! I always come back often to check for new ones, since they all seem to be so educational. In fact, I feel like a student of yours :)

Oh - and one more thing I did when replacing the fuel line; I ensured there was no "hump" (twss) or high point in the line before entering the carb fuel inlet. This way, if there is an air bubble, it won't get trapped there and potentially cause fuel starvation. Instead, it will just run up and get burned.

I had 3 months of issues with a brand new 185 plus... Finally gave up, sent it back to Discover PPG. Put a new read pack in it, then replaced the carb with a new one... WHICH WAS ALSO DEFECTIVE! The third carb did the trick! Mixer was the best...

My Atom 80 did the EXACT same thing at full throttle - turns out the fuel cap wasn’t venting well, naturally creating a tank vacuum at the highest fuel demand (full throttle). I bore out a bigger vent hole on the cap and have had zero bog problems since.

If anyone wants to be a Master mechanic of the atom/top/ATOP 80 have a look at Had Robinson's Southwest air sports troubleshooting pages. I had the exact same issue with a brand new top 80 with the wb80 carburetor and it was diagnosed and fixed with the pop-off pressure on my fuel metering Valve. also a walbro diaphragm center spacer change was not addressed with mating parts from walbro to maintain said performance. A new metering valve spring and GAPed my teeter totter and it was fixed. I went down in the lake on my third flight. I was grabbing for thrust that I couldn't get after a glide down near sea level, so to speak. Made the fix and never had that problem again. He has detailed troubleshooting pages for many makes and models with all the custom little parts you may need to complete the task you're in. For instance metering springs/or plastic fuel line reducer to fit mikuni pop off pressure tester to a tiny carburetor. Good luck!

That is the exact same clunk that I purchased for use in my paramotor fuel tank! That is so awesome that you have the same thing! I really like the ball check valve to prevent fuel from back flowing into the tank. They were only like $10 each. I ordered two of them from an ATV company in Colorado I think.

Especially good to fly with that outlook on the Atom 80 for when your clutch plates come apart, your exhaust bracket cracks all before 30 hours of very gentle fight time, glad I didn't sell the trusty Top 80 with 200 totally trouble free hours

the old bubbles in the fuel line - I had exactly the same issue with my parajet/moster. I guess the moster sucked enough fuel that for me it meant it would die totally on full power.

Had the same issue with my Top 80. I had put on a primer bulb for convenience and it started bogging. Removed the primer bulb and all is well.
@ryandinan4 жыл бұрын
Same here - but with my Nitro 200. Funny enough, this primer bulb was guaranteed not to leak air. And it was most certainly not caused by the connections... They were tight, tight. Mine started bogging at full throttle... Took the bulb out, and no more issues.

Great video Kyle, I am having this exact same issue on my Atom80; I think mine may have an air leak at the base of the carb because I check my line for bubbles during preflight every time

The bubbles appear long after preflight. Get yourself a mirror, and watch one day when the air is smooth.

Question: how would the "clunk" be responsible for sucking air - isn't it submerged? I'm wondering if I can get rid of this problem on my Atom without having to change the clunk (if it ain't broke..)

I've run into this exact problem with string trimmers (weedwhackers, we call 'em up here) - the fix is the same, pretty much. Sometimes you'll get pinholes in the hoses, though, from ethanol, and the cheap, crappy rubber the factory uses on the lower-end units.The symptoms are just much more exaggerated. Alot of the time, they just won't start, but if they do, it's up and down city, like you were pumping the throttle. Wouldn't be a fun flight on a paramotor, that's for sure! We can't get away from the ethanol crap up here - MA mandates it in ALL grades of fuel, and the laws are so confusing and convoluted (just like our gun laws ...), nobody dares sell ethanol free pure gasoline at any pump. Either have to drive out of state, to an airport, or pay $16 a gallon at Home Depot, or your local OPE (outdoor power equipment) dealer for the VP stuff in a can. Never heard of a "clunk" as you called it - I always just called it a fuel filter, although that metal one is completely different from any chainsaw or weedwhacker I've worked on. MA has its own language that's different from 99% of the country, so that's not saying much, LOL. 😁 I was dying at the blow hose description!! 😂🤣😂 Glad your pup is doing good! That was alot of stuff coming out of a bad spot! Speaking of pets, I had to bury my 16.5 year old kitty yesterday. That sucked. Heartbreaking, but unfortunately we're becoming pros at this. That's #3 in the past 4 years. They're all getting old. I've got one more 16 year old left, and we get a break for hopefully the next 15+ years. The other 2 are a little over a year, so they've got lots of time. We're big fans of the pu ... err ... kitties. 😉😁

When it bogs it's telling you it's getting lean on fuel, too much air and not enough fuel... Most likely a carburetor setting or the jet is partially clogged up with varnish from setting. Could be sucking air through a crack in the line or a bad gasket.... Definitely a fuel-air ratio problem. If when it bogs down and you squeeze the primer and it picks up and Reeves it's possible the diaphragm in the carburetor is no longer properly pumping the fuel.
@dogon10134 жыл бұрын
Some of those cheap primer bulbs leak air. I went thru 3 different styles before finding a good one.... That is my guess.
@tap8364 жыл бұрын
I have this kind of bogging problem, where squeezing the primer bulb does indeed cause it to rev back up. Started happening in my first cold weather flight with only ~5 hours on it. Checked and it definitely isn't air bubbles causing my problems. Tinkered around with the metering lever as I saw suggested elsewhere, but never could get it to run right in the cold.
@stanRmeyer4 жыл бұрын
@@tap836 cold air is more dense so it requires a little more fuel... You may need to adjust your carburetor 1/8 of a turn when it's really cold. This will richen when it's cold with dense air. This should help to give it that proper balance in cold weather. Just remember to move it back an eighth of turn when it's not cold dense air.
@cptvanier4 жыл бұрын
@@tap836 bringing the metering lever to 0.7mm (you can find instructions for this on Southwest air sports website) worked for me with the same bogging issue but only in the cold. That made the problem 90% go away but it would still lose a small amount of RPMs at full throttle. I have to drill out the fuel inlet Port, where the fuel line hooks to the carburetor with a 2 millimeter drill as was recommended by somebody on the atom 80 Facebook group. The fuel in that was necked down down inside. Just got my engine running perfectly in all weather conditions. I think this problem in cold weather is much more common than the problem Kyle had.

Personally, I think running a single line from the tank to the carb is a good way to diagnose whether or not there are any air leak issues; BUT I would certainly splice in an in-line fuel filter once you have the issue fixed... Just make sure those connections are air-tight!
