And then Dr. Wily looks over like : "Light, even I'm not like that. Even after all the stuff I did, there were bots I helped, that you abandoned to the junk heap. You declared them failures and others at the end of their useful function. I gave them purpose and freedom. Choice. Hope. Not all of them were controlled by me. Some of them wanted more to their lives." Of course he's saying that from a prison cell... but we all know he's got robot allies working to get him out.

Probably the big reason why I prefer 2003 compared to nearly every other version of Astroboy (besides this being the one I grew up with) is because Dr. Tenma remains relevant throughout the whole story. All that insane talk of Tenma wanting to make Atom the “King Of Robots” was just him desperately trying to prove that he loved his son and wanted the absolute best for him, albeit in a very twisted way. Because Tenma can’t accept the fact his neglect, selfishness, and lack of understanding is what got Tobio killed in the first place, and upon seeing what Atom was capable of, he became a lunatic. Tenma only really started to care when it was far too late. Tobio was already long gone. And as Atom says, Tenma still didn’t really understand what he was doing wrong until he got rejected a third time.

And what we see is how Astro/Atom calling out Dr. Tenma, still shows the kind hearted robot boy he's become from his time doing what he does, and how he managed to help Dr. Tenma heal, even if Dr. Tenma was pretty far gone due to how he was in pain over losing Tobio... and yet also not seeing his inaction is the reason why Tobio had died.

How the ring broke apart at the end is symbolic of Tenma finally letting go of his ambitions and allowing Astro to move on with Ochanomizu to live happily with him. Because after this whole clip, Dr. Tenma says “He’s a good father, I’m not.” Indicating that it’s time for both he and Astro to finally let go of each other and making peace.
@fuadakber495

When Tobio hugged Tenma, the mad scientist completely mellowed out. Letting go of the ring, Tenma lets out tears of pain and cries. Accepting the hug, Tenma kneels and hugs his son, redeeming himself once and for all. His ring then fell to the ground and cracked, destroyed.

This is my favorite iteration of Astro Boy/Tetsuwan Atom, because it made Dr Tenma such an interesting villain. There's an earlier episode of the series that pointed out as a child, Tenma didn't have any friends and didn't know how to interact with people, so he built a teddy bear robot to be his friend that basically just placated him all the time. Then the accident that took the life of his son Tobio was spun off from an argument because he didn't his son's emotional attachments seriously. He doesn't know how to form relationships with people without attempting to control their actions, and it keeps backfiring on him, even when he goes so far as to try and construct robot family that he can tell what to do. The final straw in all this is him trying to manipulate Atom one last time with the classic "emotional isolation" tactic by saying "I'm the only one who knows you and understands you," and Atom rejects it, because he has already experienced enough of the world to know he is loved by many. The terrible irony of this whole story is that Tenma built a wonderful, kind, loving robot, a robot that can think for itself like a real person and chooses to use his power for good all the time, and who would certainly choose to befriend Tenma and love him as a father, if he would just stop trying to FORCE Atom to do and be what TENMA WANTS. He wanted to build a perfect son, to replace the one he lost, and he DID, but he was always going to eventually grow up and away, as children always do, and Tenma just didn't have the faculties to deal with it, until it was too late.

I think it depends on the exact series. Some 90s anime is better dubbed than some modern ones. I think old dubs can be awkward, mistranslated, or just poorly executed by inexperienced VAs. But modern anime is at times plagued by over-acting, cringe line reads, translations that are TOO faithful and just sound awkward in English, etc. This specific anime had a lot of heart and the Japanese sub is infinitely better even for an English speaker.

@@Astroniko003So I have heard through some commenters that there was a slightly more uncut version of the English dub done in Australia? But most of its contents have been copyright striked and lost to the sands of time, and even was apparently broadcast in 16:9? Maybe I’m just tripping here or something but I wonder if this is a piece of lost media worth looking into or documenting

@@michaelbullen3104 Woah, really? I actually haven't heard about that, although it sounds like it would be _really_ interesting to dig into. Australian Astro Boy media like the 80's dub has always piqued my curiosity. Not really directly related, but I wonder if there were plans to go in a different direction with the 03 dub? Because I found what I'm assuming was test reel of Candi Milo's role as Astro and, while the voice direction was mostly the same, there was a line with Astro mention O'Shay being his father. Which is SUPER interesting to me since the final version avoided a lot of direct mentions of father/son relation ships Astro had. It could mean absolutely nothing but your comment happened to remind me of that.
