Lee and Pete compare how the Atomic AmpliFire sounds with the Victory V30, the Yamaha DXR12 Speaker and the Atomic CLR active wedge. The CLR cab used in this video is the regular active CLR wedge (not the NEO one).
We mic'ed the room up with 2 Rode NT5's and a Rode NTR to capture the sound in the room the best possible way.
For more info on the Victory V30 click here - goo.gl/uH1gsZ
For more info on the Yamaha DXR12 speaker click here - goo.gl/poFnyO
It should be noted that the Friedman HBE model is matched to a 4x12 cab emulation, whereas the Deluxe & Rumble amp models are matched to 1x12 cab emulations. That's essentially why there was such a big difference between the Amplifire through the Victory amp (which is using a 1x12), and the Yamaha & CLR cabs where the 4x12 cab emulation was being applied. If we'd been running the Victory V30 in to a 4x12 I'm sure the difference in sound would have been less apparent.

Great review. I bought an Amplifire the week they became available in the UK, and I've been consistently blown away by what it can do. I've gigged it, into a front of house PA, and coming back to my feet through a Mackie SRM350 v3 10 inch powered wedge. I''ve also been using it at home, direct into a 15 inch Wharfedale powered wedge, in mono, and in stereo into the Mackie and the Wharfedale. The Mackie has a load of clever digital stuff going on to make it sound amazing and bigger than it actually is. The Wharfedale is a more old-school massive speaker and tweeter combination, which sound really full and sweet. It's the first modeller I've used, which actually gives you a natural amp-playing experience, with touch sensitivity, and a real sense of physical feedback from your hands to your ears. One of the first things I did with it was to plug it into the PA we use in the band. I'd upgraded to this from a Line6 HD500x, and it blows the POD away completely in it's feel and sound. I haven't played a Helix, a Kemper or an Axe FX, but with the Live sound I get from the Amplifier, I have no intention of getting anything more expensive. Our sound guy had his mind blown by it as well.

Great review and awesome playing Danish Pete! I was a bit surprised that I liked the sound of the Amplifire cab with the first 2 presets. The HBE through the V30 power section sounded better than the Amplifire cab, IMO. I guess the EQ on the Amplifire cab can make it a little less muddy on the HBE. Great product!

I use an AX8 and after trying a number of options (including the effects returns on two different tube amps, with some of my favorite regular speaker cabs--Marshall 2204 with loop -->Marshall 1936, Redplate Blackline-->its own 1x12, with Scumback), various PA speakers and an Atomic CLR, I can say that I completely agree with the Andertons boys' assessment: the CLR is the best solution by far. It sounds absolutely huge and much more like the intended cab. I love my 1936 cab...but the CLR absolutely kills it in this application.

I set to 1080p and turned up my volume, very enjoyable! The Victory has more mid to high end bite, the Yamaha is more bass heavy and the Atomic is a middle ground. I liked the Victory Setup best, maybe it is to do with the output valves and guitar cab... as apposed to flat range responce.

I commend Andertons Music Co. This is probably the best demo of this product. This is probably the best one can estimate without physically trying out the unit himself. From my KZbin/home computer perspective, the amp with no IR sounded the best and most natural with CLR in second. The excellent guitarist comments were spot on. Front of house can be tweaked. I recently viewed a concert online where the guy was using the Amplifire and it sounded like a British stack to me. I doubt this unit would be as in your face as the amp clean & distortion. However, given the fact that this unit cost close to a boutique pedal or two, I may give it a try.

great vid, no nonsense down to the point, love it. i am thinking of getting one and was wondering, in a live situation can you program what amp and effects you want, then line them up in sequence? for example, if your first song was Panama, and your second song was wanted dead or alive, and the third song was another brick in the wall etc... can you fix patch 1 for Panama, patch 2 for wanted dead or alive etc.... so all you song would be ready to go and in order, all you need to do is switch up a bank and your ready..... thanks. if it can't do that, what can? Helix line 6, Kemper?

First of all: thank you both for doing this. As an owner of both two CLR's and two DXR 10's (little brother of the 12) I'm a bit suprprised that they both sound a bit dull in this run-through. The DXR 12 even sounds like with a blanket thrown over. I cannot believe that the actual room sound was like this and looking at the specs of the Yamaha it is not lacking in the mids at all albeit it has a tendency to be a bit boomy (the DXR 10 actually even pronounces the mids a bit more than the CLR). What I suspect from the way you were trying to capture the room sound is that you actually miked the beam of the victory cab which leaves the impression of more presence and freshness (which is also a listening bias here I think).

I think both the CLR and the DXR sound very similar..they bothsound excellent.. and very 'final', meaning like a well produced guitar sound. the Victory Cab and Power Amp seems a bit more Mid ranged harsh..maybe a good thing in a band situation.. maybe it just needs a bit of 'production' Eqs etc.. to sound as 'Final' as the emulations.. amazing time to be a musician in this world.. so much great technology and mysteries unraveled. ..what when we acutally figure it all out. I've just bought an AmpliFire from you and it's really good. I'm running it into the Effects Return of a BluGuitar AMP1 and then into an Orange 1X12 with a Vintage 30. I chose this route partly because I couldn't afford the Atomic cabinet and partly because I thought it sounded pretty good through the Victory anyway. The PA speaker sounded awful to me. I have two questions relating to what you did here:1) Would a more 'transparent' guitar speaker work better as the Vintage 30 tends to have a lot of upper mids?2) Why did you turn the cab sims off when going into the guitar cabinet because in another video you did with Chappers, you said you preferred keeping the cab sims on, even when going into a normal guitar cabinet? I've tried both on mine and you certainly get a much bigger sound with cab sims turned on.

I know this is an old comment, but I'm considering a near identical setup. How do you like it, still using it?
@AndrewWhite-lx6df
@AndrewWhite-lx6df 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I still have it and I still love it! The Atomic is so good that even after this time, when the novelty factor has certainly worn off, I still have absolutely no intention of going back to a valve amp. I'm also still using the BluGuitar AMP1 with it and I still use the same Orange 1X12. I simply haven't found anything better so far. I know they claim on the video the Atomic cab works best but I found it to be pretty marginal between the Atomic and the Victory and certainly nothing that a little tweaking wouldn't solve. I also think that it works particularly well with my set up because the Class D power amp in my BluGuitar AMP1 is made to be quite transparent because it uses modelling in the preamp stage and the valve used in the AMP1 is in the power amp stage rather than the usual preamp stage so I still get the benefit of its warmth. The AMP1 is a superb bit of kit and works well so all I really did with the Atomic was give myself more options and far more processing power so it was perhaps inevitable that the results just got better and better. What I have discovered is that I prefer using the matched cabinets even when going through my own amp and guitar cabinet. It just sounds huge compared to having no cabinet emulation. It might be different if I was using a 4X12 but through a 1X12 the use of the matched cabs option really helps. I've spoken to a few other Atomic users and they all seem to prefer using the matched cab option too. I've also found that some patches are very easy to dial in whereas others take a lot of tweaking. I still don't quite have the Marshall or Friedman tones I want but the Plexi sound is simply incredible and I found that very quickly. The Plexi model with an overdrive in front is superb. I've used this set up in the house, I've used it for gigs in pubs and I've used it for outdoor gigs and it has never sounded anything other than stellar. Frankly, there are some tones that I can get out of this (the Plexi especially) that guitarists with proper valve amps have been very jealous of and couldn't believe such a huge and vibrant sound was coming from the two small boxes on my pedalboard.

5:32 (finally!) Fender Deluxe patch, no cab emulation, thru Victory V30 return > Victory cab 5:55 Fender Deluxe patch with cab emulation thru DXR12 (which remarkably has no highs at all, could it be defective?) 6:22 Fender Deluxe patch with cab emulation thru Atomic CLR powered cab (which has added back only some of the highs we heard through the Victory, sounds great just the same) 6:57 Rumble patch, no cab emulation, thru Victory V30 return > Victory cab 7:18 Rumble patch thru DXR12 stuffed with used hankies (kidding about the hankies). I'm wondering, after that mention of the need to tweak, why no attempt was made to tweak each output. I've heard the DXR12 in different applications and I've never heard it sound this dead and lifeless. You have to really try, to work at it, to make a speaker of that quality sound bad. That said, there's no point in continuing to time-mark these demos because it's not fair comparison. It's natural to assume the CLR cab would be the best fit "out of the box" for the AmpliFire. It's a great product. Not a great use of time here though.

+adamnoire SG vs 335? SG will probably sound more trebly and have some bite, and may sustain more. Won't have the bass response of the 335. Nor will it have the 'air' from a semi solid. Through any amp system that's what I'd expect to hear comparing those 2 guitars.

@CaptAnderton
@CaptAnderton 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul E Apart from the basic amp modelling I think the 2 units are pretty different. AmpliFire definately wins as a desk top recording interface in my opinion, just because its such a great price & the amp models are very good. For gigging, especially as an alternative to a pedal board, I think Helix wins, & its incredibly intuitive to use. In the end though you need to try both in to the specific rig you're going to use it with before you can really make a real judgement call.
@paule6101
@paule6101 8 жыл бұрын
+CaptAnderton Thanks for the response. They are both floor based amp/effect modelling solutions which are intended for live use (foot controlled), and can both replace a traditional amp by going straight to the PA.. It would be great to compare the amp models on offer. Clearly the line6 is more flexible due to the larger number of controls and bigger interface, but I still think it would make a good shootout - perhaps throw in some cheaper modelling solutions too to cover a variety of price ranges.

It seems that a few people are missing the point entirely as I saw some people asking how to mic up an FRFR cabinet and others talking about how good it sounds/will sound at a gig. For those that do not know, the point of these things is to monitor your own performance or for your own enjoyment of the sound when practicing. If you are concerned with getting the best sound out to your audience you should be looking at upgrading your front of house speakers or encouraging the venue to upgrade theirs. Seeing how it is likely that the most sound critical people in the venue are going to be the band themselves, I guess it makes sense that they think it sounds good, but if you are going out to a crap PA (or a decent PA but the guy on the mixer hasn't a clue what he's doing), that is how you will sound to the rest of the world.

+napalmhardcore you can totally gig with frfr why not? my 2 freidmans kick ass live .out to house or used backlined like a normal amp. stereo never sounded better cant get that hi-fi audio with any of my tube amps.

+rick jones The point is, if you are using them to monitor, they are going to either be pointed at you and not the audience or used as a backline. Presumably, if you're using them as a backline, you don't have them cranked because the other members of your band need to hear themselves too (though I've known some inconsiderate guitarists in my time that only care that they can hear themselves and be heard). That means the benefit is for you, not your audience. The front of house speakers are going to be what the audience hears you through. Very few people seem to give any consideration to this fact. So while people are onstage with their great FRFR monitor or amp thinking they sound amazing, the audience is getting a completely mediocre sound from the mediocre front of house speakers. You get where I'm coming from?

I guess were luck we play our larger gigs most of the time with awesome p.a systems but yeah i get your point most are crap.We don't play thru systems that suck anymore..lol its still important with stage volume for the audience in smaller venues, using either amps or FRFR systems. I use 2 rigs one is 2 tube amps and pedalboard with mostly analog but a few digital effects and LOTS of plugs and cables which is controlled by G2. The other is helix with 2 freidman units and a few cables. costwise rig 1=12k and rig 2=3k . Its much easier to setup with rig 2 and the audio is way more refined since its more hi-fi and built for the helix or other such systems.Don't get me wrong I love my tubes but digital has come along way and imo finally caught up with analog. it does not make much sense to drag amp/cabs around to every gig when you can walk in with something like helix and a specific cab that's made for that system.and sound just as good or better with the ability to change amps/cabs go stereo post ect.. It all has its good and bad points but i'm glad fractal and L6 give us awesome products like this to use live or in the bedroom.

+rick jones I envy your rigs :) All of my previous gigs have been primarily acoustic (apart from when I've played as a guest with a couple of bands I was the support act for), so I've only needed my guitar to go straight to the mixer (or used the band's setup). I have my own small PA system for when I can't use the venue's (because the sound guy isn't there and doesn't like people using his equipment) or they don't have one. I've been teaching myself lead guitar and been playing a lot more electric over the past 18 months or so and intend to introduce it into my act. I currently have a Blackstar HT-20 head and the matching 2x12 cab (and an SM57 to mic it with). Being I have to take my own PA sometimes and my roadie is my retired father, I don't really want to have to lug the Blackstar to every gig, so I'm saving for an Atomic Amplifire. I currently have a couple of the Joyo Sansamp clones that can be used direct and a Zoom G5. While they sound OK at home through my little TC FX150 for noodling, I don't know how they'd sound at a gig. I don't want to embarrass myself at a gig if I have to go direct and they end up sounding horrible. The Amplifire has really impressed me in some of the demos I've seen, so it would give me peace of mind. Plus, with the power-amp modeling and cab IRs, it will give me a lot of flexibility to use with other gear. That and I just plain want it lol.

+wheresallthezombies You can independently turn off/on the preamp, power amp and cabinets. A lot of people still prefer to keep the power amp simulations on when using tube amps. It helps get a cranked sound at lower volumes.

Yes, I still use the power amp sims on the AmpliFire even though I'm using my own power amp but I don't always have the power amp on the AmpliFire set to 100%. Sometimes, by backing it down a bit, you can use it as an effective alternative to tweaking the EQ settings.

Ye gods, that "Rumble" model sounds utterly droolworthy. Well, if my ears could drool, coming to think of it. Which amp is it modelled after? Some sort of an obscure Link Wray / Surf guitar / Rockabilly reference?

The cabinet emulation adds a LOT of low-mid and bass... you don't hear that on the Victory amp without the cab emulation.

I wonder if they applied the appropriate DSP settings on those full range speakers (the Yamaha and CLR). To be placed on the ground, there are settings which compensate for the increased bass that would be experienced, and I would guess they failed to do that.

Great video but the choice of guitar could have been better. IMHO most players use strats, Paul’s and teles and those guitars probably represent more guitar players. Hollow bodies really color the tone versus solid body guitars. Of course IMHO. Peace to all.

I miss the simple amp test where it is easily understood because the amp/speaker was all it was. Now with some many configuration options these type tests are not useful to me. I have to draw a picture for myself of these various configs just to attempt to understand what I'm listening to. Sorry but to me this was not a very good comparison.

If you're gonna use an active PA plastic box speaker then at least use the QSC 12" or JBL EON 15"...those yamaha DS's are a joke. Peter is splendid as always...who has he toured for????

The Atomic Cab solution sounds well balanced - so the development of guitar gear might move more and more into such a direction. But it is obviously that tube amps are a dying species.
@superbford

The tube amp gave a bit too much of its own character..... the Yamaha was bad... would need more tweaking in the Atomic to get it right. The Atomic speaker setup was the best sounding overall and the most true to what the models were conveying.
