*Afterthoughts & Addenda* *About the shops* - I may have done Bridport a slight disservice in selecting to show only those windows that had Christmas displays or decorations in them and this has caused a few people to wonder if the place is all charity shops. It's not - it's actually a thriving and diverse market town that has 3 butchers, a greengrocer, a cheese shop and deli, as well as numerous bakeries, patisseries, cafes and restaurants (and that's just the food-related shops)

How lovely to see the effort local businesses have put into their windows. I don't really do Christmas, but the windows looked beautiful. My favourites were the windows that were both festive but also on theme for their business, like the craft shop with the wreath made from bobbins and ribbons.

Love towns like that, so much history and charm. Some of those shops are in buildings that are almost ancient with how long they've been there. The best part is that all those shops are local establishments instead of giant retailers. I hate big cities, soulless square buildings and garish lights, small towns have LIFE and individuality.

Really, I don't think I've ever seen such a concentration of them before. I remember a few in Seattle when I lived there, and now I'm in the French countryside, I can't remember seeing one in the 30+ years I've been here, except for the big Emmaus shop. Even the few 'antique' shops have dried up over time.

Lovely little town, btw. And I would agree. By describing or explaining something to others (in person or on camera) one is prone to be much more immersed in the experience oneself. It is almost a form of mindfullness. I had that experience a lot when out and about with my kid nephew, when he was still small. Little kids make you really notice everything around you again - because they do. It's quite a magical experience.

I love all the decorated windows 😃❤ ... Im in the U.S. by a big city named Chicago. We use to have these windows on State Street that had such great decorations. People would specifically come to the city just to view the windows. But years ago the quality, quantity, & originality really dropped. Such a shame! ... So it's great to see your windows and how beautiful & festive they are. Thank you for sharing! 😃❤️🖖

Takes me back over 60 years to when my mother took us to downtown Washington D.C. to see the window displays. There was a large department store that decorated their windows using Christmas carols as themes. The window I most remember was "I saw 3 ships come sailing in". The displays were mechanical and the 3 ships were bobbing up and down on the waves. Another I remember had mechanical dolls dressed in long satin dresses, twirling around as we watched. I haven't thought of that in years.

As a Yorkshireman, who rarely travels to the south of our country, I was struck by how diverse the commercial area was but the high street did seem to be swamped with charity shops, not that I have anything against such establishments or their aims to raise not just financial support, for their charities but awareness of how the money raised is utilised by the community. From my limited knowledge about Bridport, I have always imagined that there would be several tea shops decorated with Gingham curtains and lots of chintz so I enjoyed your little stroll around the town. I am curious however about the apparent lack of small food stores. I would have presumed that there would have been many more purveyors of groceries and butchers and bakers,with perhaps a couple of the major supermarket brands tucked away from the high street in one of the ubiquitous industrial parks that are everywhere these days.
@AtomicShrimpСағат бұрын
There are a fair few food stores; off the top of my head, two butchers, two bakeries, a couple of patisseries, a greengrocer and a lot of cafes and small restaurants (not all of them featured in the video, since for example the butcher didn't have the window dressed for Christmas in particular). All in all, it seems to be a really thriving town centre.
@andrewcoates664157 минут бұрын
@ It’s a shame that the butchers haven’t put on a good display of their work, I always like to take a few minutes having a gander at a butcher’s shop window especially if they trade in specialty goods like game and pies. If there’s a good looking pie in the window I am always happy to purchase a pie for my tea.

Thank you for your Christmas window shopping. I used to do that as a child, and occasionally since. But most of our shops are in malls now and it is not the same as walking the streets. If there was a voting on the displays, I would vote for the first estate shop. Moving into a new house and starting a new home at the beginning of a new year s a life affirming event. Christmas moving is a difficult thing, but very rewarding.

I was surprised not to see painted windows. In my part of the US that's a common choice for store windows (not chains, generally), sometimes covering most of the window, sometimes decorating in a "frame' so an internal display can be seen.

Regarding the book shop having the snowflakes made from book pages... I guess there's the possibility that those were books that were maybe damaged and couldn't be sold.. Also you mentioned they could also have just simply been printed... It's hard to tell from the footage but I guess the colour of the paper would be a little bit of a giveaway. My view is that the recycling of a modern mass produced book that is either damaged or unwanted is preferable to the wanton wastage of printer paper and toner which are both bad for the environment, rather than an unwanted book which has already been manufactured and would likely end up in the bin anyway. Probably overanalyzing here but just my two pence 😅

So here's a bit of random, amusing trivia, regarding 'gift giving'. In German, the word 'Gift' means 'poison'. And no, it's not a coincidence. It's the same word, as far as it's origin is concerned. But in medieval 'pre Germany', the word was also used as a euphemism for poison. Because, after all, poison is 'a little gift you (secretly) give someone'. And over time, this meaning completely took over. I find that very amusing.
@paulinebelford26459 сағат бұрын

You are so lucky to have such a range of independent shops, with some very artistic displays. On the idea of making decorations using book pages - I can do it if the book is already destroyed ie only part of the book present (eg throw-out from the school library at the end of the year), but I couldn’t destroy a book intentionally. I tried it once by buying a copy of my favourite book to make the decorations meaningful. Just couldn’t do the deed, so now I have a spare copy of my favourite book!
