I think what they (Channel Awesome) consistently try to go for is the “so bad it’s good” motif. Studios with huge budgets and experienced writers try to pull that off and fail constantly, and the ones that do pull it off are extremely rare, otherwise it’s typically done accidentally. But the most egregious example of his ego is that he thinks Mechakara is a GENUINELY scary and terrifying villain. He writes these monologues for the character I just KNOW he was patting himself on the back for and approached this as a project that was going to elevate him to Cannes or Sundance. And he blew 60k on this... It reminds me of the ego stroking writing in Lightbringer...in that awful thing he even ripped off the ‘v ‘ speech in V for Vendetta. You know the part where V introduced himself using tons of words that begin with V? Yeah Lewis did the same with the letter L...but Lewis thinks he’s a mix of James Cameron and Cormac McCarthy.

"They might have saved some money using the Channel Awesome set" Well they would also have to, tear down the existing sets (they were already built up), drive 8 or so hours to Chicago, rebuild the sets, take them down again after recording, and drive 8 hours back. You'd have to factor the difference between studio rental costs and the cost gas for driving 16 hours total and the cost of probably rent a truck or two to move the set pieces plus time and labor. Also, I don't think it's unreasonable for Channel Awesome to have wanted someone there to supervise filming. The studio lease is in their name so if anything unfortunate did happen it would have been their responsibility.

Case in point: the back and forth at 2:50 Linkara is always facing in such a way that it looks like he's looking off to the side of who he's talking to. God the response was so typical; Lewis has always been bad with handling criticism, and really I guess most CA guys were/are; but at this point, if you're still trying to make a living doing review videos, you need to learn to take it to some degree. At least Doug lately realized that you shouldn't act like a baby every time people shit on you for something on the internet (it is possible he's just wary of stirring shit up since CTC). I know it's not nice for internet d-bags to harass you, but get fucking use to it. Isn't he like 40-something almost? And every time it's like, "this person's a piece of shit because they didn't control their fans and some are making fun of me". He's been pretty brutal to some comic creators in his reviews before, but I'm sure if any of those guys heard about it they really wouldn't care.
@thefanwithoutaface81052 жыл бұрын
Yeah, something I've seen over the years is that most of the CA guys have kind of serious ego problems, which is probably part of the reason almost all of them have essentially plateaued since leaving the site. Outside of The Dom, Todd in the Shadows, and Lyndsay Ellis (Not so much now) they've all pretty much peaked. None of them have grown in terms of subscriber count or popularity, many of them like Film Brain and the Blockbuster Buster have positively pitiful view and subscriber counts yet keep doing this inspite of it and almost all of them have this arrogance to them, as though they are somehow better than most critics. Probably doesn't help that many of them were around when Internet reviewing was still a new thing and thus their popularity was much higher back then. However, unlike Doug and the Angry Video Game Nerd who've managed to adapt and change with the times, these guys are stuck using the same gimmicks, jokes and funding vanity projects like this all but ignoring the fact they've officially peaked.
