I agree with you to an extent. I'm sure a lot of the CA creators got a massive ego from their follower base, but also don't forget that a lot of their viewers asked for, and enjoyed, this stuff. I think it's more about their ego being stroked more by praise from their audience than blowing themselves to their majesty or something. I know, I know, kinda splitting hairs here, I guess. I'll give Cinema Snob this, at least he made movies before, and after, the Cinema Snob movies and was making them on a shoestring budget long before he got a big viewer base.

I think it’s more of a lack of self-awareness than narcissism… The only time I’ve ever heard of any of these people is from these Ralph videos - and I get the feeling that Ralph is mostly interested in them out of self-awareness that if things went even _slightly_ differently he could easily have ended up just like this. Although I think Ralph moved out on his own? The vibe I get from these people is that they’re all adults who still live with their parents, but are too preoccupied by toys & cartoons to have developed any shame or compunction about it.

I think what they (Channel Awesome) consistently try to go for is the “so bad it’s good” motif. Studios with huge budgets and experienced writers try to pull that off and fail constantly, and the ones that do pull it off are extremely rare, otherwise it’s typically done accidentally. Point is, they’re trying to go for funny and it’s not working, mainly because Doug Walker gets too wrapped up in aggressively huffing his own farts.

It’s extremely telling that every Channel Awesome related “film” eventually becomes extremely focused on how unhappy the main character is making videos on KZbin. They can communicate this in a normal way by just telling their fans that they’re taking a break from making videos, or making new kinds of videos that interest them more. They don’t have to make hour plus long “movies” where they wallow in youtuber self pity.

Funniest thing about this is that he thinks he is not just a fantastic writer and director, but he thinks that it’s believable that his character is the bad ass mix of Kirk and Bond he wrote as. But the most egregious example of his ego is that he thinks Mechakara is a GENUINELY scary and terrifying villain. He writes these monologues for the character I just KNOW he was patting himself on the back for and approached this as a project that was going to elevate him to Cannes or Sundance. And he blew 60k on this... It reminds me of the ego stroking writing in Lightbringer...in that awful thing he even ripped off the ‘v ‘ speech in V for Vendetta. You know the part where V introduced himself using tons of words that begin with V? Yeah Lewis did the same with the letter L...but Lewis thinks he’s a mix of James Cameron and Cormac McCarthy.

"They might have saved some money using the Channel Awesome set" Well they would also have to, tear down the existing sets (they were already built up), drive 8 or so hours to Chicago, rebuild the sets, take them down again after recording, and drive 8 hours back. You'd have to factor the difference between studio rental costs and the cost gas for driving 16 hours total and the cost of probably rent a truck or two to move the set pieces plus time and labor. Also, I don't think it's unreasonable for Channel Awesome to have wanted someone there to supervise filming. The studio lease is in their name so if anything unfortunate did happen it would have been their responsibility.

For a conglomeration of people reviewing movies, comics and so on, it's astound how NONE of the TGWTG people ever learned (or bothered to learn) about the 180 degree rule and staging. Linkara is probably one of the worst offenders of almost never following the 180 degree rule. Case in point: the back and forth at 2:50 Linkara is always facing in such a way that it looks like he's looking off to the side of who he's talking to. Together with the really weird choice of having the other person be constantly looking back it makes for an awfully annoying to look at scene.

@@TheWrathAbove there’s nothing wrong with lower quality media at all as long as you don’t try to elevate it to more than it is. Doug’s reviews were never legitimate critique. Seems pretty trash but at least there wasn't anything mean spirited about it, which is more than can be said for most of Channel Awesome's output. Really just more unnecessary navel-gazing than anything else, but if it was cathartic for Linkara I guess it accomplished its objective.

God the response was so typical; Lewis has always been bad with handling criticism, and really I guess most CA guys were/are; but at this point, if you're still trying to make a living doing review videos, you need to learn to take it to some degree. At least Doug lately realized that you shouldn't act like a baby every time people shit on you for something on the internet (it is possible he's just wary of stirring shit up since CTC). I know it's not nice for internet d-bags to harass you, but get fucking use to it. Isn't he like 40-something almost? And every time it's like, "this person's a piece of shit because they didn't control their fans and some are making fun of me". He's been pretty brutal to some comic creators in his reviews before, but I'm sure if any of those guys heard about it they really wouldn't care.
@thefanwithoutaface8105

Yeah, something I've seen over the years is that most of the CA guys have kind of serious ego problems, which is probably part of the reason almost all of them have essentially plateaued since leaving the site. Outside of The Dom, Todd in the Shadows, and Lyndsay Ellis (Not so much now) they've all pretty much peaked. None of them have grown in terms of subscriber count or popularity, many of them like Film Brain and the Blockbuster Buster have positively pitiful view and subscriber counts yet keep doing this inspite of it and almost all of them have this arrogance to them, as though they are somehow better than most critics. Probably doesn't help that many of them were around when Internet reviewing was still a new thing and thus their popularity was much higher back then. However, unlike Doug and the Angry Video Game Nerd who've managed to adapt and change with the times, these guys are stuck using the same gimmicks, jokes and funding vanity projects like this all but ignoring the fact they've officially peaked.
