My advice for anyone replacing this shift cable is to buy the OEM AC Delco part. For my 2008 chevy tahoe, I purchased the Pioneer brand cable from O'Reilly's, installation was fairly simple, but I could not get the cable adjusted correctly; it would either not shift into park or shift into 1st. After hours and hours of adjusting the cable length and not getting it to work, I took it to my local shop. They told me that they believe the cable was not up to spec. They installed the AC Delco cable with no problem. Thankfully I was at least able to get my money back from the Pioneer cable. But save yourself the hassle and headache...BUY THE OEM AC DELCO Cable!!!!

I'm glad you posted this. I had the same trouble with my cable when I replaced it. Fought for hours before finally giving up and deciding to live without first low gear. Now I'm going to go see what brand that sucker is. Thank you so much for that info!

Did the ac Delco cable fix it?? I’ve been fighting for hours and it refuses to go into park. Almost like the cable is too short. I have the cable adjusted all the way and it hits reverse and limbo between reverse and park… if I adjust it back the other way I won’t even have reverse. It’s a pioneer cable from oreillys…

If your truck won't go into park it's the housing of the cable blown out under the floor mat. If you don't have the money to fix it there is a temporary fix. Get a 24 oz can of beer or Mikes hard lemonade. Drink all of it first. Now cut a long piece of the can and wrap around the bad spot as tight as you can. Use several zip ties to hold it and then wrap it all with electrical tape. I needed a couple pieces for mine. It works perfectly and I expect it to last a couple months easy. I will buy a cable soon but I'm back to having park. If you get stranded you can get underneath and shift into park by moving the part where the cable attaches. I did it at night with the light from my phone and it got me home. It's usually the housing of the cable that breaks and the cable buckles when you put it in park, the beer can keeps it from buckling

I did almost the same thing, but used a piece of rubber hose instead of a beer can. Get about 6 inches, cut it length wise, slide it over the bad part of the housing, making sure the actual cable isnt pinched, and then wrap it with duct tape or electrical tape. Mine has held up for weeks like that. I did drink at least 24 oz of beer while I was doing it, too, just to be safe. I also realized there is almost no metal left in the floor of my truck, just a big hole covered with insulation and floor mats.

@@johnzabel3417 I think I ran mine for close to a year and it never failed. I finally replaced at some point. And you are lucky you drank the 24 oz of beer or you would have had big problems.

I definitely followed the instructions this man gave and I gotta say it was simple and anytime I felt it was complicated I looked back at the video for something I missed. And also getting that old cable out was a b!+$# but glad to say this video helped me out thanks!

The connector between the upper and lower cable has the white slider that you see in the video. Slide the slider back with the cable tension released (remove the ball joint on the transmission end). Then pull on the cable and it should reveal the connector between the two cables you will see two to three copper ears that is the e-clip connector that I found in the 2003 Tahoe. It is in the same place on both vehicles, the upper and lower connecter even looks similar. I went to a local junk yard (LKQ Pick a part) and pulled it.

My 96 Chevy has 4 wheel drive and the bracket that holds the new cable is too close to the 4x4 drive shaft. Loosening the bracket is going to involve loosening just 2 bolts but they're practically hidden Alan bolts and just trying all the sizes of Alan wrenches to blindly get one to fit is tough. Set to tackle this in my 2nd day now. Geesh

I just installed this very same cable in my daughter's '63 Nova. It was a perfect fit. All I had to do was, use the arm from a 4l60e, cut and reverse it, Cut off the 4l60e bracket, straighten it, bolt it to the crossmember, cut the little peg out of the aluminum arm from he column, thread one end of it, drill a strategically located hole in the column shifter arm, install the peg and, fabricate a bracket for the top end. Did I mention this was all after shortening the column 15 3/4 inches and re-indexed he shifter arm on he column 90 degrees so I could install a 2009 Corolla power steering unit? I was going to replace the column with a floor shift column and a shifter on the floor but, the daughter said, "Oh, no, dad, I want it just like Grampa had it". It is all in now and it WORKS. Now out comes the column for paint. I know this is long but, I left out the hair pulling parts.

My 99 Silverado cable was working but getting hard as hell to shift. Inspection of the cable showed the exterior in very good condition. Disconnected link from transmission lever. Shifter slid back and forth with much sluggish resistance. Disconnected the bottom half of cable at the mid point connector. Shifter slid back and forth so freely with just the upper half of cable connected. Worked second half of disconnected cable by hand. Slid with great friction. Tried getting in as much oil as possible inside the outer jacket by working steel inner cable back and forth. Cannot pull cable out to grease it due to permanently attached ends. Reattached and reconnected lower half cable to transmission. Shifter now moves much easier thru the shift range. Mission accomplished. Why buy a new cable and throw away 80+ dollars?

Wow, that has been the best demonstration of such repair I've seen. Here is 'my' situation: I have a Chevy Astro Van that's stuck hundreds of miles from a mechanic's shop with shifter issues. In my case the shifter (at the steering column) has come loose to the point where shifting is no longer possible. Although I'm not a mechanic, I tried to at least get an idea about things and found that a section of what holds that shifter unit in place had fractured, leaving the bolt that is supposed to hold it in place useless. So it seems that the entire shifter assembly needs to be replaced, then reconnected to the wires you showed in this video. This leads me to consider replacing the wire at the same time. I assume this video's vehicle is similar enough to make it useful for the Astro Van as well. But I have another (dummie?) question: What actually happens where the wire connects to the transmission? It seems that (similar to a motorcycle where the foot is used to shift) the wire must turn something to help select the various settings P, R, D etc. In a pinch, could this be accomplished by other means like disconnecting the cable, and then, perhaps with a wrench, turn that part to the D setting. If that were possible, by first setting the P brake, I could drive the van to the nearest repair shop and have them do the part of repair for which I lack the tools. Any ideas? (other than laughter, that is : )
@brianmiller9701
@brianmiller9701 10 ай бұрын
Yes, you can do that, but only if you have someone sitting in the van holding down the brake pedal, while you crawl under the van and you can easily move the trans lever by hand into the drive postion. No tools required.

If you are just replacing the lower cable you have to not loose the snap ring you pull with the needle nose pliers because in GM's great wisdom they don't send a new one with the cable. When the two cables are apart use the needle nose pliers again and reinstall the clip in it's slot then as he shows slide the two cables together until you hear the click. Also put the shifter cable back on the trans lever before putting on the white locking clip. if the selector lever is in park and the trans lever is in park you should need no adjustment then.

OOOOOOOOOOOOKAYYYYYYY: 3:36 "remove the cable. Note the routing" etc... Man, that was a huge pain in the butt! The trick is to look at the wire: there are 2 bends in it that keep the cable locked in. The upper one is the one you have to somehow flip the cable over, and it is released. 1.5 hours!!!!! That bend is not visible when the retaining wire is in its normal place. You have to move it around and notice it through a narrow passage between all the crap under the dash... So, the instructions should read "remove upper cable from dash. Spend 2 hours fighting with it, and removing other dash items that don't need to be removed. Drink a bottle of scotch, get into an argument with your wife. Let the cops handcuff you. Spend night in jail. Return home the next day. Get truck towed to mechanic. etc..... hehehehehe! OK< off to store to get the cable...
@limogesfarmer6326
@limogesfarmer6326 7 жыл бұрын
4 hours later: here are my thoughts: 1) When you pull back the sliding lock, give it a quarter turn: it will stay in the open position, and make adjusting this a lot better. 2) When you connect the two cables back together, spit on the o-ring, and spread the saliva around it: it will make inserting the end much easier. Also: make sure you REALLY push hard all the way in. You'll feel/hear a click if you're lucky. That's the copper retaining clip catching the Transmission end of the cable. 3) Remember EXACTLY how the lower (transmission end) cable was passed over the various components under the truck (gas tank, etc...). Take pictures before you take it out. 4) when connecting the upper (cab end) cable under the dash, undo the two right hand screws holding the back plastic box with all the wires coming out of it: it will give you that extra room to make your connections. I used an APT kit: it was great, and had OK instructions. Nothing about how to make the adjustments, but it's easy to figure out. This is not an easy job, as the passing of the cables (removal and installation) can be quote difficult. If you've done a couple of these on this model, then maybe you'll get the hang of it and it will go smoothly.

Yeah, part I'm having issues with is putting the cable back in under the dash, I like how they made it look real simple to put the cable through yeah no. Can't bend the end of it so how are you not supposed to bend the cable around that makes a lot of sense. Stupid !!!!

Great video. i came here out of frustration but I have to say that if pioneer is your vendor/ manufacturer I wont being buying another. After comparing the upper cable its about an inch longer. which when u join them together it gets worse. the book calls for 1.1 but it took me 3 to figure this out. waiting on dealer to bring one

Hello everybody. My question is in the adjustments whenever he goes to pull the one cable out and takes that clip out what if mine doesn't have that clip in it. Could it be messing up my gears engaging correctly? Plus I am missing the spring on the one side of adjustment piece.

Does the little clip that holds the cables together automatically clip in when you move the shifter. I just replaced the bottom and had trouble getting the clip back on. I got it clicked on but I doubt it was the groove. I put it back together and moved the shifter up and down slowly hoping that pushed it the rest of the way in. Tested and was good, didn’t even have to adjust. Wondering if I need to double check the clip or if I’m good? 🤷‍♂️

Hey there I'm trying to adjust the cable I have in place (old one). Do you have any tips on removing the clip at the adjustment joint? I tried to pop mine out but I don't want to break it. It seems like very brittle plastic. Thanks

My problem is the white plastic clip that joins the 2 parts of the cable together. Can't get it to clip on. Everything else was easy. Bolt at the fire wall. (10mm combo end wrench with ratchet head.) cable out. Cable in. Routing cable into the spring wire gizmo. Reassembling everything. Just havent been able to connect the 2 halves of the cable together. Grr

What about the clip that holds the 2 inner cables together in the middle?
@orlalara

Hello, thanks for the video. I followed the instructions until I found the cause of my problem. In 1:27 you show "the clip that retains the 2 inner cables" my question is: is that retainer clip a normal e-clip retainer? I'm wondering if I can find something similar but I'm not able to see in the video the shape of the retainer. If someone can tell me, I would appreciate it so much. Thanks in advance.

The e-clip you describe could probably be replaced by another, as long as the smallest diameter part of the e-clip that locks the 2 cables together fits in the e-clip groove of the cable that goes to the lever/ball assembly of the transmission, under the truck. I used forceps to install it, and that worked well. To remove it, there's not much room to pull it out, so I just slowly, and gently pushed it out with a small screw driver. Make sure to have something like a tarp or cardboard to catch the clip, because it is less than 3/8" in diameter, and extremely easy to lose. By the way, that tiny e-clip on my truck appears to be bronze or similar, so a magnet will not help you find it, if you lose it.

Not sure if I need a cable or just readjustment. I replaced my trans, didn't touch the cable (other than simply unsnapping it from the trans) and put everything back together. Now my shift range selector is slightly off. Going from D to R the box around the shift positions in the dash immediately goes to P, even though the trans is in R (unlocks the doors) then quickly shows R like I selected. Very annoying and I had to disable it in the settings. I'm confused.
